FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations Approved for 2010-11
Nine northwest counties move to Deer Zone B

COLUMBUS, OH – The proposal to eliminate requirement that hunters must first purchase a regular deer permit before purchasing antlerless deer permits was passed by the Ohio Wildlife Council at the April 7 meeting, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

Also, hunters in nine northwest Ohio counties will be given a higher deer bag limit.

The change to the deer zones includes moving nine northwest Ohio counties from Deer Zone A to Zone B. The counties are Allen, Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Lucas, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Williams.

Hunters can again buy antlerless deer permits at reduced prices for hunting in an urban zone, participating in a Division of Wildlife-authorized controlled hunt or hunting during the September 25 to November 28 portion of the deer season. The sale of reduced priced antlerless permits will cease after November 28, so hunters need to commit early to buying and using the extra reduced-cost permits to take full advantage of this opportunity. The deadline for using the antlerless permit will be extended to December 5 for those hunting in Deer Zone C. Cost of the antlerless deer permit remains $15.

The maximum number of deer that a hunter may take in Deer Zone A is two. Prior to November 29, hunters may take up to two deer in Zone A, one of which may be on a $15 antlerless deer permit. Beginning November 29, hunters may take only one deer in Zone A and antlerless permits may not be used.

The maximum number of deer that a hunter may take in Deer Zone B is four. Prior to November 29, hunters may take up to four deer in Zone B, two of which may be on $15 antlerless deer permits. Beginning November 29, hunters may take only two deer in Zone B and antlerless permits may not be used.

The maximum number of deer that a hunter may take in Deer Zone C is six. Prior to December 6, hunters may take up to six deer in Zone C, three of which may be on $15 antlerless deer permits. Beginning December 6, hunters may take only three deer in Zone C and antlerless permits may not be used.

Those hunting in urban zones and at Division of Wildlife-authorized controlled hunts will again have a six-deer bag limit, and those deer will not count against the hunter's zone bag limit.

Either a $15 antlerless deer permit and a valid hunting license or $24 deer permit and a valid hunting license are required to hunt deer in Ohio. A hunter may take only one antlered deer in Ohio, regardless of zone, hunting method or season.

Clay, as someone who isn't a hunter, I found this information regarding the various hunting seasons very interesting. I didn't know fox were plentiful enough to hunt (apparently, they are). As far as I'm concerned, we could declare open season on Canada goose and crows (damn annoying birds IMO).

Thanks for posting it!

Had a friend over last thursday evening - got the bows out and practiced..

I'm still a bit confused on the "4 deer in zone B, but no antlerless deer after nov. 29th............that means, even though I bought the antlerless permits - I can't use them for gun season? Like, say with bow I get a doe and a buck. Even if I have another antlerless permit, I can't go during gun season?

I am pretty sure it is an open season on crow, Canadien Geese really are only a problem where they have no predators.I guess you could say the same for deer and coyotes.

Probably can't answer this question, but what percentage of hunters would you say follow the rules exactly?

Well I would just say the majority of us try to follow them as exact as possible, I doubt anyone can say that they follow every tiny little subsection that they might not know of but I think most follow the spirit of the laws to the best of their knowledge.

I would say probably 99%, I dont think you will find many hunters hunting out of season. You would be more likely to find hunters using improper firearms or improper ammo loads if anything. Like my brother in law who takes a deer (on his own property) with a 30 odd 6 every year.

I'm with ya Arch, We have a DNR officer attending one of our clubs meetings to help explain,

My understanding of the rules are kinda like yours, 3 deer which have to be doe can be taken prior to shot gun season, than you can use your atlered tag to take either a antlered or atlerless deer, but I've also heard diffent senarios, I know I'm not taking 4 deer, I'll get my doe with my bow, just bought a new crossbow for this season, unless a 10+ buck gives me ashot I cant pass up....LOL..Like that ever happens in Fulton County....than i'll use my atlered tag for shot gun week in defiance county at my friends farm. i'll just harvest 2 deer hopefully, thats enough to fill the freezer for a year without wasting any.

Our for fathers, men & women who serve this country to insure we keep freedoms to bear arms. Previous hunters who fought to keep hunting an option to those who enjoy it, to me hunting is a privlege, it may not be seen as such to everybody, but for a boy raised on the farm grew up in the woods, hunted with his grandfather, father and now son, thru my eyes what has been given to me is a privlege and needs to be protected for others who wish to enjoy hunting.

I dont think there is a exact number out thier, but hunting is like everything else, some people try to do it correctly, ethically respect it appriciate it, some people try to find loop holes, & abuse what is given, those to me are not hunters, those who purposely abuse or take advantage of the rules are pochers, as hunters weve all wondered into someone elses land, we've all taken a shot we probebly shouldnt have, we've all done something we shouldnt have, the diffrence between us & pochers is that we only do it once and it still sticks in the back of our minds and we dont or try not to repeat it. I was 19 hunting took a off angle shot at 40 - 45 yards with my bow, hit the deer in the back of the head, didnt kill it but took off enough ear, skin fur to cause alot of damage, something that probebly killed it a few days or weeks later, it probebly died in the woods for no reason. That unethical shot still haunts me today, I had no reason taking that shot, no reason, but I got excited and thought I was a better archer than I was at 19 so took it, things like this all hunters sometimes do, it was a mistake I regret but have learned form and dont do anymore, I learned & respect the animals I harvest, some dont they dont care & continue to give hunters a bad name.

My DNR guy resides right down the road from my property. We're pretty close and he's told me they will be picky this season! Ohio needs money so you better be quickly tagged and have your crap together in the field!

Surprised to see you can trap river otters in Ohio. Just where might there be a harvestable population in this state? They've only seen a few in the ONWR over the years.

I don't know - I just stopped today at the Henry Co. DNR officer's home - talked with him. Point blank said "can you explain the 4 bag limit". And he did - he said - "you can get 4 - only 1 buck".

I then asked him about the antlerless tags - and he looked at me, smiled and said "I don't know - we haven't gotten much guidance from the state yet. Stop back in a week or so."

So, if the DNR guy isn't sure - how the heck am I supposed to be sure? I've read the new rules, on line, 4 different times, and I'm still confused.
