I finally joined the smartphone world today, got sick of waiting for the mythical Verizon iPhone and got the Droid X.

Awesome so far. A little on the big side but it makes texting on a touchscreen a lot easier. I'm also pretty intrigued by the Swype texting program that makes texting on touchscreens faster, but I'm not used to it yet.

Overall, pretty satisfied with it. Probably going to get the extended battery when available as well.

Sweet, I have a Droid and love it. The X looks really nice. The new operating system (Froyo) should be released sometime soon and will update over the air.

You'll love it, I have the Droid. Although our company is switching to Sprint soon and they got me an Evo 4G in the contract which is the competitor to the Droid X.

And with all the issues the media is reporting about the iPhone 4 and it's reception issues, and yesterday I saw a report about bluetooth problems as well, not sure I would want one anyway after experiencing the Android OS.

Yea!

Frankly, I just don't need that much more from my phone than just to make phone calls.

I don't need to research at the store.

I generally know where I'm going, and if I don't, I download directions in advance .....

I don't need my phone to tell me how to cook .... or how many steps I took over the course of the day ..... or most of the other crap they do.

It's a lot like the PC.

Once upon a time I was pure geek on the PC. I wanted all of the newest aps .... downloaded tons of crap daily ...... played around with new programs ......

And .... in the end ..... rarely used them for anything productive.

The biggest 2 uses for my computer are accessing the internet (and this site is always open) and office aps. Occasionally I use a photo editor, or play solitaire.

I played with all of the crap available. This is what I need ...... and I don't need a whole lot more.

That's why you just buy the phone you need/want.. I needed more out of my phone and wanted to delve more into apps..

My wife and I both have iPhone 4's and love them. Apple's display is pure eye candy and we have a lot of fun with facetime. Since I ride a VTX, being able to just slip my phone in my pocket, with bluetooth speakers in my helmet and listening to Pandora is great, if my wife calls, I can just take the call and keep on riding.

+1 for Advanced Task Killer

Barcode Scanner (and Google Shopper) are pretty cool, it has come in handy

Mototorch LED turns your camera flash into a flashlight

Google Sky Map is pretty cool to find stars, just a unique app

Pandora and NFL Mobile are nice

PdaNet if you have unlimited data...you can use it to generate internet for your laptop if there isn't any wifi in the area.

Then I have a Wells Fargo app that I can't use yet....my Wachovia account switches to them on September 25th.

Yellow Pages app has come in handy a couple of times as well.

Didn't know you were a rider. What year and CC? Pictures? And what helmet you using? Here's mine.

On Topic: I had the iPhone 3G for two years and was looking for a new phone. I was looking at the iPhone 4, the Evo, and the Droid X. My work pays for my service since I need work e-mail. I went with the iPhone 4 after 3 weeks of doing research. I gota say, the resolution on the phone is UNREAL! And the speed is awesome. I haven't used facetime yet.

I can type a sentance in less than 10 seconds on my Iphone 4. Beat that! Ok, it's "Go." (the shortest sentence in the English language).

I can hit the mic button on my Evo(or any Android 2.1+ phone), and have it type out the sentence for me

Will it put the period in there for you?

Mine is a VTX - 1300S - 2007 My helmets are a Shoei 3/4 and Zox modular. The Scala Rider from Cardo Systems gives me the bluetooth in whatever helmet I'm wearing.

Here's a shot of my bike.

I looked seriously at the Droid X, not so much on the EVO, my wife's contract with Sprint was up and we wanted to get as far away from them as possible. Not to mention you have to pay an extra $10 a month for 4G and we don't even have 4G here! Great marketing strategy Sprint!

The Droid X is a nice phone but in the end I liked the iPhone 4 better.

BTW, I'm already on my second Droid X. My first one had a screen defect.

Two programs that I forgot to mention that I love. Google Maps, it was already pre-installed on mine but I use it all the time, especially since I just moved. With my GPS already 3 years old, I often find myself using my phone to direct me instead because a lot of the data is already outdated in my GPS.

Also, Layar is a pretty cool app. It uses your current location and shows you what is around you. Great for when you are exploring a city and want to grab a bite to eat and want to see what around you, even if it's around the block and you can't see it.

Swype is pretty cool. I love the voice option of typing but sometimes it acts funny. I'm a fast typer so I much prefer using the Swype function. The Droid X comes with it installed, you just have to go and turn it on in the settings.

I wish I waited and got the X. I got the Droid HTC Eris in May. I love it except for texting. Its laggy. I used to be the worlds fastest texter, now I am reduced to a single finger 80 year old man because it takes forever for my phone to recognize i hit a letter.

and definitely +1 to Advanced Task Killer. definitely.

i used google maps, pandora, and dictionary.com for word of the day. its fun to have a new word every day on one of my home pages.

I am using Cyanogen's mod for 2.2(CM6) which is still in beta... The stable (CM5) is 2.1.
