My wife and I are thinking of taking a little weekend vacation to Erie, PA on the long weekend for 4th of July. I am not sure it is a good idea though. What do you all think? Any of you been there? Is it "nice" ? Is it worth spending the money to go there? Or is not that much different from Cleveland... Opinions are welcomed here...Thanks.

They just built a casino there.
I used to go there each summer for a little bit. It's not a "tourist mecha" (or it wasn't then anyway) but it was peaceful, quiet, and had nice beaches.

My Aunt and Cousins have lived there all my life. There are real nice places down on the water. Good beaches, boating, fishing, etc... Great for a long weekend in the summer.

I was just there for an evening this past weekend, and what ive learned about Erie is that if you do a little bit of planning research its a very good time.
There is a lot to do there. The bars in downtown arent the greatest places in the world, but...there is enough variety that you can find the kind of bar you want to go to.
There are things to do, theres a pretty decent mall there, there is a very fun family friendly comedy club (family friendly just means that they keep the material relatively clean...they dont just cuss and be rude the whole time) and the people that go there are all very kind and very fun. I'd definitely recommend it, its called Jr.'s Last Laugh Comedy Club...its like 115 bucks to catch a show and they have food and an open bar...2 shows both saturday and friday.
There are nice bars near the water and good beaches too...definitely a great place to spend a nice little weekend, and it wont kill your wallet either.
However...if youre into hibachi japanese food...there are two good places...one is called Aoyama and the other is called Hibachi Japanese Steakhouse...i went to Hibachi and it doesnt look like much, but the food is amazing and the variety of food to order is amazing...much different from typical japanese places in my opinion...like they have swordfish and sharksteak and foods like that. Aoyama i have heard is also good, as 2 friends of mine went there...they recommend that place as well.
Have fun when you go!

The Old Lady (Joice) is from there, so I got no complaints,...there really isn't a lot of 'vacationing' things going on outside of the aforementioned "lake" stuff,....fishing, beaches, etc., but it is worth doing. The sunset(s) at Presque Isle are one-of-a-kind. I do not know if the amusement park is still open there. There is a nice new hotel on the waterfront,....and they have a minor league baseball team. If you need a place to hang out and eat great food, my brother-in-law is the manager at a place on the west side (Fairview) called Chico's.
Good ole' down home, easy going folks,...lots of Browns, Steeler, Bills, and Cavs fans. Chico's has a "Browns" corner in the restaurant. Popcorn machine is to die for. Raceway 7 also, for you Saturday night dirt track stock car homies.
If you can find "Jake's Blues" playing anywhere, this kid is a Navy Seal whose only guitar playing rivals are Hendrix and Stevie.

Steeler fans=fail. Although it begrudges me to admit it, I've met some Stoolies that know their football. And they're super-critical of their team and realize that the only post-1980 SB they legitimately won was in 2008--it sucked to see the Cards melt, I say, but it was a fair game (unlike 2005).
Bills fans=makes sense--Erie is 90mi. west of Buffalo.
As far as tourism, visit Presque Isle, the aquarium and the ship there. Erie is a nice place, but driving is tricky. Lots of construction downtown and on 79 north of the 90 interchange.
Go Browns!

I live in Erie. It's not a bad place to spend a weekend. Living here can get boring though, but that's alot of small cities if you live there your whole life.
Attractions: Casino, horse racing and slots, and table games starting first week of July Presque Isle, good fishing and 12 beaches. beach 6 is the fun beach, beach 11 is more family oriented Waldameer amusement park Zoo Millcreek Mall, People tend to like the no sales tax on clothes Family First Sports Park- batting cages, go carts, putt putt, bumper boats Sunview Golf (Edinboro, PA)- batting cages, putt putt, golf driving range Indoor Lazer Tag venue Variety of restaurants Strip of bars down town, as someone else said all different kinds
Hope it helps.

If you like amusement parks, Waldameer is a great small park. Their star attraction, Ravine Flyer II, is one of the world's best wooden coasters. They also have many other classic and modern rides worth riding. I can easily spend a day there, but if you're used to Cedar Point just an evening would be enough. The park is right next to Presque Isle and offers free parking and free admission. So even if you're not sure, it doesn't cost anything to stop by and take a look. They also offer a pay-per-ride system. Actually, just driving to Presque Isle will cause you to drive under Ravine Flyer!

it is very nice; you can stay at the Sheraton on the water next to the Erie Convention Center; there is a awesome place to eat right next door on the water. You can go to Waldemeer; Presque Isle is a whole day in itself, you can go to the 12 beaches, they have wildlife areas, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, lots of other stuff to do. Right at the Sheraton Bayfront, they have a lighthouse that you can go up to the top, but they have a second floor level that you can hang out. You also can fish right at the lighthouse or right in front of the hotel if you so choose. Oh yeah, you are also only about 10-15 minutes away from the casino. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-...nnsylvania.htmlhttp://www.visiteriepa.com/presque_isle_state_park.shtml
