So my mom wants to take me on vacation for a few days at the beginning of May. She isnt one for laying by a beach all day so I wouldnt suggest a place where you are pretty much at your resort the whole time, like the Dominican Republic.

She suggested Atlantis in the Bahamas, but that looks super expensive. Im leaning towards Riveria Maya because all inclusive resorts look to be much cheaper. Has anyone been? I thought of RM because they do have the Mayan Ruins which she would like. I originally thought Tulum but it looks like we would be limited to the resort as far as nearby activities. Someone else suggested Playa del Carmen in RM.

I really dont know much about these areas and have found I can get better prices on my own than through a travel agent.

Went to Nassau Bahamas on a cruise. It was awesome.

2 words: Senor Frogs. (of course, I was 17 at the time and the concept of no legal drinking age was too much to pass up)

We went to Cancun for our honeymoon, and it was great! Can't wait till we get a chance to go back. There are a number of all-inclusive resorts on and away from the Cancun "strip", so there should be lots of options. There are also plenty of tours to be had which can take you to the ruins of Tulum, Chichen Itza, etc ... also PLENTY of other activities that you can do around that area.

We took a jet boat tour ... which were sort of these two person side-by-side jetski-like things ... and rode around the inside of Cancun Lagoon. Then headed outside to the ocean and got to do some snorkling as well.

Went to Chicinitza another day, which will pretty much chew up a full day ... but they take you to some side attractions as well, like an underground cave with a huge natural pool that you can cliff dive on.

Another day we rented a car and drove down to Playa del Carmen which had an awesome public beach, straight out of a Dos Equis commercial ... and also, erm ... tops optional.

Then of course theirs the whole "hotel" and "nightclub" experience of Cancun itself, which is sort of like a tropical version of Vegas.

Highly recommend the place.

I am assuming your Mother is older than you

If she wants to pay and enjoy a week/weekend with her kid, let her decide where she wants to go.

If she wants Atlantis, go there.

Not trying to be morbid here, but maybe she knows or senses something and maybe this is the last road trip you take together....make it what she wants.

I wish I could take another trip with my Mama.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I was just at Costa Maya last month (which I think is the same or right beside Riviera Maya). I'd think hard about that one, because the area is still pretty desolate from the hurricane they got hammered with. That said the locals could definitely use the income so I don't want to sound like it'd be hrorrible, but I really liked Belize best of the places we stopped, plus the native language there is English which is a bonus if you don't speak Spanish.

I actually enjoyed the Spanish accent of it. I picked up a book of tourist phrases, as well as a spanish-english dictionary ... and learned enough to get by. It was pretty enjoyable when on the Chichitza tour, I ran a block down the road and bought a coke for $2 less than at the tourist trap.

I strongly recommend any "Melia" resort. - I know they have one in Puerto Vallarta, and I believe they have one in Riveiera Maya, or Cozumel.

My wife and I stayed at the Melia in Puerto Vallarta several years ago. -It was beautiful.

ALL INCLUSIVE! THE ONLY WAY TO GO!

All on the resort, here were my activities for one week:

Wakeup - breakfast buffet

After breakfast - beach volleyball

After beach volleyball- hit the swimup bar for an hour or so

After hitting up the swim up bar - pool basketball or pool water polo - the resort hosts intermittent pool water polo - tons of fun.

After pool water polo - Grab some lunch from 1 of 3 different locations on the resort. Then back to the swim up bar for another hour

After the swim-up bar - lay in a poolside recliner and work on my tan (all the while, waitresses are bringing me bottles of water and Dos Equis and Pina Coladas)

After working on my tan - Back to the room for a shower and change of clothes, lay around for 1/2 hour - on the balcony or in bed, whichever you prefer.

After laying around for an hour, - Off to 1 of 3 restaurants for dinner (however you like it bro, fancy, buffet, or moderate, it's all up to you man)

After dinner - back to the room to lay down, or go straight to the lounge. - Drinks, live music, dancing. - If you don't want to go to the lounge, you can watch a live show.

- One week of gluttony bro. - What it's all about. I can't wait to do it again when my daughter is old enough to enjoy herself.

- I went with my wife, you mentioned that you are going with family - I could not imagine how cool it would have been with family around.

Here's a link to the hotel we were at:

Not sure if it's the same hotel, but they do have a "Grand Melia" in Cancun, and HOLY HECK, it's amazing! The structure is made up of several Mayan looking pyramids, and the middle one has a rainforest, inside! We said we'd probably stay there if we ever went again.

Yeah, my mom is not a big drinker and I would be perfectly happy laying on the beach drinking all day. Thats why I thought of RM because we could go on some cool excursions. Ive been to all inclusives with my girlfriend before, went to Dreams Punta Cana in Jan. I just want to go somwhere where my mom could have some fun while im poolside. She actually took me and my sister to Puerto Vallarta when I was 10, so she really doesnt doesnt want to go back there.

I believe it was Hurricane Dean in 2007. It looks like Riviera Maya is a bit further North of Costa Maya though. The shops at Costa Maya were selling Riviera Maya stuff as well...so perhaps that entire coast of the Yucatan is considered the riviera.
