Now with all these extra picks I think it is likely we will make a run at some restricted free agents. Here are some guys who might be potential fits and/or guys I like along with their free agent tender:

QB - Brodie Croyle - Kansas City Chiefs (2nd Round Tender)
QB - Tavaris Jackson - Minnesota Vikings (3rd Round Tender)
QB - Charlie Whitehurst - San Diego Chargers (3rd Round Tender)

WR - Lance Moore - New Orleans Saints (2nd Round Tender)

TE - Tony Scheffler - Denver Broncos (2nd Round Tender)

OL - Alex Barron - St. Louis Rams (2nd Round Tender)
OL - Jermon Bushrod - New Orleans Saints (2nd Round Tender)
OL - Jeromey Clary - San Diego Chargers (2nd Round Tender)
OL - Jeremy Trueblood - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2nd Round Tender)

LB - Chris Gocong - Philadelphia Eagles (3rd Round Tender)
LB - Kirk Morrison - Oakland Raiders (3rd Round Tender)

CB - William Gay - Pittsburgh Steelers (5th Round Tender)

S - Oshiomogho Atogwe - St. Louis Rams (Right of First Refusal)
S - Atari Bigby - Green Bay Packers (2nd Round Tender)
S - Eric Smith - New York Jets (3rd Round Tender)

Only one I see that I think we may have legit interest in is Gocong since both Mangini and Heckert love him.

I'd take Gocong, Barron,Otogwe and call it a day.

And if we wanted to we could. I'd break out the old poison pill and make an offer.

Only one I would be a little iffy on is Barron cause I don't really wanna get rid of a second. but I think he would completely solidify our right side. (if we draft a guard)

Though I do have to admit I haven't seen alot of him lately. I remember he was pretty good before.

From what I've seen, he's nothing to write home about. Definitely not worth a 2nd rounder IMO.

Atogwe and Gocong interest me.

Other than that....ehhhh.

I highly doubt we use our picks to trade for defensive players.. Gini' did say he was in love with Gocong.. but he isn't worth a 3rd in my opinion. Great motor, but very undersized..

Anybody looking at Moore there as a bargain? I find that interesting what he might bring compared to a two draft pick. We will be needing some folx this year who catch.

We don't really have to sign them to big contracts. We just have to include a poison pill. Something Holmgren knows well.

When he was with Seattle, Minnesota stole Hutchinson from the Seahawks by making his contract become fully guaranteed if he wasn't the highest paid linemen on the team (the Seahawks had Walter Jones).

Then to get Minnesota back (kind of), Seattle signed Nate Burleson to a similar contract.

Absolutely. Once Minny let that Genie out of the bottle, the outright poison pill has been on the table and a team does not, in any way, have to worry about the original team matching.

since there has been no rule change, i think there's been a somewhat truce where the teams agreed not to use poison pills. if there wasn't, and seeing as there were no repurcussions from the minny/seattle thing with hutchinson/burleson, you'd think a lot more of them would happen.

Especially this year when there are over 200 restricted free agents.

It's either a truce, or it's a case where no team wants to go first.

Minny went first, and Seattle responded in kind as soon as it could.... so, a team knows that if they do, they can expect it done to them.




It only takes one to get it started, however.

Back to the Cold War of my youth (yeah, I am still old!). The nuclear deterrent strategy was called MAD sometimes, and the poison pill mentioned is like that: Mutually Assured Destruction. Could be a real wrecking ball in the NFL if they got scattered everywhere and negotiating differently with the haves have nots perhaps. This year and the un-cap . . . interesting to watch the shakeout this year. I still would sign and get whatever guarantees I could for any player wants some security. JMo.

I see no harm in at least offering a contract to some restricted free agents. Even if it is a reasonable contract with no poison pills and doesn't break the bank.

Worst case scenario, the team matches your offer. Best case scenario, you get a player you want for a draft pick.

why wouldn't they go first. in the minn/seattle example, minn plucked hutchinson and seattle took...nate burleson. many felt that was only in retaliation, not because they really wanted the guy and you can't even compare the two in their respective positions.

i get your point in that they'll need to look at their own restricted agents to see if they can want to risk loising him but if they're gonna use the pill, it's for someone they REALLY want and it'd be worth it then.

The other thing is you could always do what New England did with Miami, offer the player a contract, and then make a trade with the players original team, probably for less then what the team would get via the restricted loophole.
