Strong Day For Buckeyes' Gibson, Spitler

Coleman, Cordle, Owusa-Ansah perform well at workout Aaron Wilson

March 12, 2010

Ohio State defensive end-outside linebacker Thaddeus Gibson wasn't the only Buckeye that delivered a strong performance during today's campus Pro Day workout.

Outside linebacker Austin Spitler, a 6-foot-2, 243-pound projected middle-round to late-round projection, clocked a 4.23 short shuttle and a 6.7 three-cone drill with a 32-inch vertical leap and bench pressed 225 pounds 32 times, according to a league source.

We're told that NFL scouts were extremely impressed with how Spitler performed during the linebacker drills.

Meanwhile, Ohio State center Jim Cordle, a 6-4, 305-pound late-round to middle-round player, turned in a 4.75 short shuttle, a 7.69 three-cone drill and a 28-inch vertical leap.

A versatile player who can even snap left-handed, Cordle bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times.

Cordle's numbers were respectable considering he hasn't been able to train much since getting injured in the East-West Shrine game.

Meanwhile, Gibson ran in the low 4.6 range and is being projected as a third-round to second-round pick, according to SI.com.

Safety Kurt Coleman clocked a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash with a 6.75 three-cone drill.

Indiana (PA.) cornerback Akwasi Owusa-Ansah was at the Buckeyes' Pro Day.

Per the report, he ran sub 4.4 in with a 4.05 20-yard shuttle.

That's major improvement from the NFL scouting combine where his 40 time was an official 4.47 with a 4.32 in the shuttle.

He's set to have surgery next week to repair a torn labrum.

Impressive 40 time for Gibson ... he's a bit of a tweener, but he has a nose for the QB ... just not sure if he makes the move to OLB effectively.

I'm a big fan of Kurt Coleman and would be thrilled if we use one of our #5 picks to grab him. His measurables don't touch the elite safeties, but he's a ballhawk and can really play, imo.

I said the same thing about Donnie Nicky years ago too,...

That's excellent news! One of Austin's family members is my next door neighbor. It's funny to see him trimming her hedges in the summer.

I'd certainly take a flyer on either at the right spot. The 2nd 3rd for Gibson would sound about right to me and the 5th for Coleman is fair. Neither thing is a slam dunk by any measure but at those slots I'd be pretty okay with it.

Missed ya at Taggarts!

Yeah, Austin will ride his bike over to Grandma's sometimes. Hard to believe Austin is facing a NFL career, isn't it? I wish him well and hope someone drafts him and gives him a shot.

Just as long as it isn't us. He's a Bungle fan.
