The 2010 Patriots will be the first team in recent memory to go coordinator free.
The team announced Friday that they will not name a defensive coordinator, ending weeks of speculation. Bill Belichick will work more closely with the defense in the coming season. So, basically he's the coordinator.
Cue the sports radio hysteria in Boston saying that Belichick has too much power.
"Titles are fine, nothing wrong with them," Belichick said, "but the most important thing is each person's role, that we do everything we can to help the players succeed - everyone collectively getting the job done."
The team confirmed the hiring of Corwin Brown as a defensive assistant who will help Josh Boyer coach the team's defensive backs. Linebackers coach Matt Patricia and defensive line coach Pepper Johnson, both rumored as candidates for the coordinator gig, will stay in their current roles.
On offense, the team will remain without a coordinator for the second straight year. Quarterbacks Bill O'Brien called most of the plays last year.
"Bill O'Brien has demonstrated excellent leadership and organizational skills in our offense," Belichick said.
It's possible that the Patriots could tinker with the staff, but it essentially looks set. And there's no doubting who's in charge.

my guess is because BB is a mastermind but also it helps prevent other teams from raiding their staff at the end of every season if the teams don't know who did what.

if that's what he's doing,, it's brilliant.. If this is the case,, Belicheck should have been a professional chess master.. he'd have made Boris Spasky cry

This a lot to take on for anyone, let alone a person who will be 58 years old when next season starts.
The Patriots dynasty is officially over.

Not a chance that this is a sign of the end of the Pats' dynasty. This is a good move for Pats fans IMO,

Eh maybe. My first thought is how big is BBs ego? Why? But I don't think it's that tough as long as hes got some help from other coaches. I imagine it's easy to get caught up in the game so if it were me I'd want at minimum somebody like a bench coach in baseball whos only game day job would be to stand next to me and think ahead, watch clock etc. It'll be interesting to see how this works out.

First thought I read it was the first team in NFL history to not have a coordinator, but it actually said first team in recent memory. I remember Madden saying the Chuck Knoll Steelers didn't have coordinators but they were the runningbacks coach and linebackers coach.

Somebody will be serving as the coordinator, they just won't have the coordinator title.

I would guess that they have been operating without a d coordinator for a while. It sure would explain how a DC could be on a dominating team like the Pats were all those years and come here and have no clue how to coach defense.
RAC was a talking head. He was just there to deliver belichek's message.
