Someone help me here...Harry Reid made some really bad comments about Obama...using the words "light-skinned" and "has no negro dialect unless he wants one".

So tell me...what "better words" could he have chosen to make his (apparent) point?

I mean really...it's not like he pronounced a word wrong...or typed there when he meant their...or said "all" when he meant "many"...or said "hate" when he meant "serious dislike" or said "worst ever" Browns pla...well...you get it.

He apologized and said he "could have used a better choice of words".

So tell me Harry...what other words would have been better to say to make your point?

His apologies ring hollow...his spin is an insult...the politicians giving him a pass are lower than snakes. They should force this liar out of his position as majority "leader" of the senate. Period.

Had a Republican said this, he would have lost his job by now.

The race card has to apply both ways.

This is true, and it's nothing but politics. It kind of shocked me to hear the NAACP defending the guy yesterday.

That said what he said, taken literally, was not racist. The use of the term Negro makes him sound extremely dated, and like he doesn't have a lot of black acquaintances I'd guess. In reality a lighter skinned black man that speaks well, is going to be easier to get elected because a lot of people judge the alternative poorly in this country.

But the politics of the equation is that Republicans get assumed to be racist, and Democrats are assumed to not be racist. I think this is pretty ridiculous given the history of the parties (Look at Robert Bird for goodness sake), but the Republican party has a way to go with earning much trust from the black community as a whole.

Yea, I used to think that was true too... then I realized that the democrats have pretty much cornered the marked on getting black people to believe that republicans and corporations are the reason for their lot in life.... that and they promise them a ton of free stuff.

Well that helps too....and the media promotes the idea whenever possible as well. The other thing is because black people as a whole are not part of the Republican base, they don't go out of their way to do things to entice them either, you ahve to choose where you make effort politically and there isn't much reason to do so for one party.

What was his point in the first place? Why was he even talking about this? You've got to have more sense than that at that age, regardless of your upbringing or situation.

We don't really know, it's in a book due to be released.. I have to wonder why the authors, who work for Time and New York magazine let these comments go unreported since the 2008 conventions... wait, no I don't.
