Eagles upgrade Martin Rucker, cut P.J. Hill Posted by Mike Florio on December 15, 2009 2:40 PM ET The Philadelphia Eagles have made a move that could be a strong hint that running back Brian Westbrook will be returning to action this week. Running back P.J. Hill has been released, and his spot on the roster has been replaced by Martin Rucker, a tight end signed to the team's practice squad in September, two days after being waived by the Browns. Rucker is the brother of former Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker, and he's also a former college teammate of receiver Jeremy Maclin. Recent reports have indicated the Westbrook, who has missed several weeks after suffering a second concussion in two games, could be playing this weekend. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/12/15/eagles-upgrade-martin-rucker-cut-pj-hill/

Looks like Rucker caught on with the Eagles... I wish he would have gotten more of a chance here, considering we have Robert Royal and we gave up two draft picks for Rucker.
At least we have Evan Moore now...

Yeah, I had high hopes for Rucker here, he just never got it going though.
Being that he has been on their practice squad this long tells me that it's taken him a bit to get it going there as well.
Best of luck to him... and thank God for Moore!
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Maybe we should take a look a Hill. Philly has some solid RB so didn't really need him but this is a position of need for us.

Do we have a need for a RB like Hill though? We have a fair amount of "decent" RBs. Harrison and Jennings are serviceable, and we still have James Davis for next year...

I wasn't very high on Hill coming out of the draft but I don't think we have anything we can call a real answer to the position. I don't know what Hill would bring but I would look at anyone that might be an improvement. Especially since we really only have 2 active backs on the roster.

where are all the "Rucker couldn't even make their roster so he sucks" people....9-4 team going to the playoffs...time will tell...i thought it was a mistake to give up on him so early with such a lack of talent on the team...don't start on Moore either

It was rather silly to give up on him so soon, but this one pales in comparison to some of the sillier moves last offseason.

I can start with an "I told you so". Teams have limited ability to develop other teams players, that is why it is so difficult to get picked up on another roster during the season. I hope Rucker does well. I wish him well.. He just did not get a chance with the Browns.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

jc Maybe we could get him back for David Veikune. Eh... maybe we better not. I'm told DV is going to come on strong next year.. So if DV cost us a 2nd rounder and we had to wait a year for him.. next year he should be worth at least a 2 probably more like a low first round pick. Right?

The Eagles are so thin offensively, they had little choice, once again this board acts like this is a big deal, when it isn't, especially for a guy that was made for the Chud offense.

Were right here, & I dont remember using the word sucks, but regardless, I still feel like if he was worth keeping why didnt he show something here, and it dosent mean anything getting put on the Eagles roster late December so dont get his Pro bowl ticket yet. If Rucker had anything special or worth keeping he would have been on our roster in september, not magically appering on Philly's in December. Philly needed another TE it's late in the year and they normally run the ball more come December. To Me Rucker is an average prospect, needs alot of work, more than we could give him.
As for Rucker, I wish him the best, I hope Philly or somebody can aford him the time to grow & learn, he needs to run better routes, & learn to block & work on his hands & speed, maybe in time he will grow & become a good TE, I hope so, I wish him well.
Anyway

"...more then we could give him"
????
We're 2-11....this is the ideal place to develop a talent. More so then a 9-4 playoff team
No one's punching pro bowl, but we have no TE talent/depth on this team, especially receiving skills....that's the point

I'm not the coach, I just responded from what the coach did, he wanted a diffrent type of TE, brought in 3-4 types he wanted , leaving Rucker out in the cold, he didnt fit mangini style, not my call, just assuming what happened.

For me, it wasn't so much about Rucker, but more about what Savage gave up to get him. It may not sound like much, but trading away high third round picks to make a pick in the fourth round a year earlier is normally pretty terrible, especially when the pick doesn't pan out.
What is there to get started on Moore? The guy had 6 catches in his first NFL game. Rucker has had 2 in two years. And yeah I understand that he was injured some games, inactive others, and on the practice squad this year.... that pretty much sums up my thoughts on giving the 2009 #69 overall pick to get him.
That's a sunk cost though. Should we have kept him? I don't know.. time will tell. He certainly wasn't doing anything for us so I really don't see the big deal to be honest. If he lights it up in Philly then good for him.

Hmm...
I'm more interested in PJ Hill being cut because I wanted the Browns to look at him in the draft.

This is true, but the Browns need more then one TE. As of now, I only consider Moore as the only decent TE going into next year.

at this stage...Moore and Rucker are both "catch only" TEs with limited blocking.
both can improve in that area, but our team needs only one such TE as we supposedly want to be a run-first team (meaning we need TEs who can block in most of our formations)
