Haven't posted in a while (but read everyday). So I know some of you are real savvy as far as computers go.

Here's the problem......My modem died recently after a thunderstorm. I opened up the tower and replaced it with one I had ( I keep everything from every computer I ever owned). But after I did that, I lost my sound. None at all. You can hear noise when I unplug and plug my speakers back in. But the computer tells me I have no sound device. I am missing something? Besides cleaning my heatsink and replacing the modem, I touched nothing else.

Any help before I take it to the shop?

Thanks in advance....

You most likely have an add-on sound card, not one that is integrated into the motherboard, and you probably bumped it or just slightly unseated it when you inserted the new modem... it happens all the time. It is usually a result of the motherboard flexing a bit when you insert the new card, it unseats adjacent cards just enough to disturb things.

Just shut it down and open it up and find the sound card... then pull it out and put it back in, ensuring that it is firmly pressed back into its slot.

If you have an integrated sound card.... then I'm at a loss.

Could be a IRQ conflict with the modem you put in and with the sound card itself.... you may just need to change the irq number of the modem and/or sound card... or you can try re-installing the software drivers for both and see what happens.

As tux said, most likely it's a conflict. One way to find out is remove the modem, and bootup the machine see if the sound works.

Then reinstall the modem and if no sound, then you definitely have a conflict and need to resolve it, most likely by changing the irq, or by reinstalling the drivers often repairs the issues.
