Fins, Browns almost swapped Brown, Edwards

Posted by Mike Florio on October 12, 2009 7:49 PM ET PFT.
As receiver Braylon Edwards prepares for his first game as a member of the New York Jets, Edwards could have been playing in this game as a member of the Miami Dolphins.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Browns and the Dolphins were talking in the offseason about a trade that would have sent Edwards to Miami for running back Ronnie Brown.

As Schefter points out, Brown was the second overall pick in the 2005 draft -- and Edwards was the third.

Making this even more interesting is that, on draft day 2005, some Dolphins employees were convinced that the team would be taking Edwards with the first draft pick of the Nick Saban regime. Folks were surprised to learn that the pick was Brown.

It's unknown whether Saban changed his mind, or whether he was intentionally sending out phony smoke signals within his own building in order to conceal his actual plan.

Well, Ronnie Brown just completed a pass for more yards than our offense had in an entire game...

Most erroneous statement of all time.

Jerome Harrison can last in this division but Ronnie Brown can't?

What does he have to achieve statistically for that to turn into a 2nd rounder?

Why? Because the Steelers and Ravens hit harder than the Patriots and Jets?

If he plays up to certain expectations, we get a second as opposed to a third round pick.

Well it will take a few years to see if that 3rd/5th develop into anything or to see what becomes of Stucky but atm I would rather have Brown than all of that.

Go Browns!!

It always starts out rosey, it's 3-4 games from now when everything becomes normal, thats when we will see the real BE.

I do hope he does well this year, I would like a 2nd round pick.

For the rest of this year, BE's largest cheering section is going to be Browns fans.

Hmmm is this all that would have been involved in the trade?
If so I still might have done it..it would have still given KoMan options in the draft and Brown wouldn't look bad since Lewis has been out.
Brown has 443 yards rushing and 6 TDs in 5 games...

In more news the Browns talked to every team in the league about multiple players.

Would you look at that, we could have traded for 12 pro bowl players and we didn't

When things like this come out , it makes one pause ..especially when nothing was leaked about it before.. certainly none of us know how serious it was..but it was there.

Sorry but I take Schefter with a big grain of salt. He's almost an "entertainer" rather than a journalist. He's been hysterically wrong in the past and I deeply suspect he makes crap up on a semi-regular basis. Right or wrong no one from Browns or Fins will say diddly about this and he know it. I read and watch him regularly because, well, he's entertaining, but I'm always thinking it's a 50/50 chance what he's saying has any real merit.

Oh I believe the teams may have "Talked" but I would bet money on us talking to every team out there and discussing many options with each team. Just because somebody on one side or the other may have mentioned "Hey about BE for Brown" does not mean their was any serious discussion from either side. Just look at the headlines of this thread " Browns almost swapped Brown, Edwards " ALMOST SWAPPED" somebody has a vivid imagination.

As far as Miami ever taking Edwards in the draft, that was all Saban pulling an old Butch Davis (Duckett).

The Browns could have made out with that trade. Lewis wouldnt be here if that trade happened.

I couldnt imagine BE being happy playing with 2 OSU WRs. Especially with all the OSU fans who got old and moved to Florida. I could gaurentee the first TD to Ginn or Hartline by Pennington, Edwards would be calling for Henne. Pennington eventually got hurt, maybe for his career, but that would have showed his imaturity to just wait and let it happen. They didnt draft Henne in the 2nd round without having him in the plans. Parcells takes those big pocket passers early to try em out (Bledsoe, Henson), not sit them for too long.
