Woman, 74, Hospitalized After Being Mauled by Pack of Raccoons
Monday, October 05, 2009

Print ShareThisLAKELAND, Fla. — A 74-year-old Lakeland woman was hospitalized after being mauled by a pack of raccoons she tried to shoo from her yard.

Gretchen Whitted fell when five raccoons surrounded and attacked, suffering extensive cuts from her neck to her legs.

"We're not talking about a lot of little bites here," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. "She was filleted."

A neighbor called for help after hearing the woman's cries and seeing her covered in blood.

Whitted received dozens of staples and sutures and was treated for rabies, though officials doubt the animals were infected.

Fire crews flooded nearby drains where some of the animals escaped, but none turned up. Animal Control officers hope to catch them in traps baited with wet cat food and sardines.

She was filleted

She was what? You mean like a fish? *L*

Kinda dumb to try and shoe away a hungry pack of ANYTHING when your 74 years old.

Hell, I bet a fierce pack of rampaging gerbils coulda taken her down *L*

She probably made the mistake of either cornering them, or going after a pack of babies with Mama right there (more likely).
Unfortunate for her, but it sounds like she got off lightly... those critters really could have done some major damage if they wanted to.

Reminds me of a movie....

"Follow! But! follow only if ye be men of valor, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived! Bones of four fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty big pointy teeth."

What's the point of the writer telling the reader what the bait is....especially when it is so humorous. Wet cat food and sardines....for a vicious pack of raccoons. I have a visual of these 5 animals, in their black leather jackets, cigarette hanging off the side of the mouth, snapping their paws as they walk towards the wet cat food and sardines...then busting out laughing at the site of that mess.

Coon's can get pretty ornery.

She probably went out there with a broom when she really needed a gun, and at minimum a baseball bat.
