Saw this and just had to post it.. Here's the section on the Browns... See the link below to read all of the article. Quote:
Cleveland Browns Regular-season schedule | Preseason results | Preseason statistics The biggest problem with the Browns' preseason is that it has failed to produce a clear-cut winner from the most important battle on the team: Starting quarterback.
Neither Brady Quinn nor Derek Anderson has done much to make a convincing argument. And for some reason, coach Eric Mangini decided that neither needed a fourth game to help determine the outcome of the competition, because both sat out Thursday night's preseason-finale at Chicago.
Quinn, who made two starts, has connected on 21 of 31 passes for 225 yards. His lone shining moment was producing the Browns' only touchdown pass of their first three preseason games when he connected for a 20-yard score with Braylon Edwards against Tennessee. Anderson, who started one game, went 15-for-26 passing for 207 yards.
Overall, both have been largely inconsistent and ineffective, leaving Mangini and the rest of the decision-makers to essentially choose the winner on the basis of gut instinct. This sets a bad tone for the season because the rest of the players don't truly know who is leading the offense and have no reason to believe that either Anderson or Quinn is capable of taking the team anywhere but another finish short of the playoffs.
Another troublesome issue is that no playmakers have emerged during the summer.
No Play maker emerged,,,,,, Can anyone say James Davis, DQ Jackson, A. Ruben, Kenyon Coleman, Josh Cribbs and to some extent, MoMass, Veikune and Francise....
He doesn't take into account that we played GB and looked horrible.. But got our act together to pummel Detroit (a team that I guess shouldn't worry according to Carucci), stand tall and beat the Titans and go toe to toe with the Bears and make it close..
He only looks at TD's by the QB's, but doesn't take into account that we had several from our RB's, ST's and Defense..
It's a team game right?
I'm not saying we will light the league up this year.. not at all, but damn,, Do we really look that bad and I just don't see it because I'm a fan? Geesh
I could be wrong, but I really feel as if we are the most underated team out there right now

10. The Browns can’t make a decision There is no need to drag out a quarterback competition into the first week of the regular season, but that is exactly what head coach Eric Mangini has done in Cleveland—with Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson waiting for a decision. This club has no idea who its leader is, and despite the overwhelming opinion that Quinn is the right choice for this football team, I am not buying it. With an offense that will struggle to score points, Anderson, and his ability to throw the deep ball with more accuracy than Quinn, puts him in the top spot in my opinion. Quinn is the safe choice, but throwing underneath isn’t going to put points on the scoreboard. http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Weekend-notes-final-preseason-thoughts.html

LOL,, You really don't give Mangini any credit at all do ya I actually don't agree with that paragraph.. reasons are simple.. Neither guy exactly set the world on fire, neither guy did anything to make himself a CLEAR CUT WINNER. So why not let it play out as long as possible in hopes that someone will jump to the forefront. Anyway, since he didn't play either of them on Thursday, and said he's seen enough to make his decision, then I suggest he's made his decision and is just playing with the Vikes. For all we know, the QB's in question have been told who's the starter and who isn't.. But mangini doesn't strike me as the type that will tell us anything until he absolutly needs to do so. As is his right.....

Actually Mark Schlereth was on the Mike and Mike show the other morning, and explained why he as on offensive lineman wants his starting QB getting the reps. In Short he said that, as an O-Lineman he is going against guys who are usually bigger, stronger and faster. His one and only advantage was knowing his QBs exact cadence and timing. Essentially giving him a jump on the D line. And that when your constantly switching QBs, that little bit of difference in cadence between them is the difference between attacking the D line, or reacting to it and getting overwhelmed. I would bet that receivers would have some preference to getting used to how the starting QB thinks and throws also.

The only thing i saw in that is media talking points. Just a parrot of everything that's been posted by others and opinion. Every year, there must be ~5 teams for the media to harp on, we're one ... again.

Of course.. that makes sense.. But what if, and this is the dilemma, what if neither QB does anything to seperate himself from the other guy.. I mean by a huge margin.. Neither has done that..
I know your not suggesting that Mangini pick a QB just to satisfy his Oline are you?

I love how the media is arrogant enough to think that Mangini hasn't decided on a starter yet. I'm willing to bet that he has not only started, but that the team knows who the guy is as well.

Exactly. I love how they turn "hasn't told us what his decision is" into "CAN'T make a decision". It seems that sports press as a whole is ticked off because they don't get whatever info they want when they want it. Wah! Cry me a river...

Mangini has already stated the starter will get the bulk of the reps this coming week. Even if the rest of the world isn't told who the starter is.

Some feel and I agree that a starter ought to get the majority of the reps.
I agree also,, and given that I suspect the decision is made and they'll probably start practicing and preparing for the Vikes tomorrow, I think that if you could get into camp, you would see the person he's decided on getting the reps.. That's my guess...

No, not to satisfy them. Although different in style, I think that BQ and DA are close enough in ability at the moment, that whoever gets in synch with the rest of the team is the one that will do better. I want him to do it so the team can all get on board with one guy, his thoughts, his timings, and his preferences for certain types of plays and or adjustments.

well Rage,, when asked about not playing DA or Quinn in thursdays game, Mangini reportedly said he's seen enough to make his decision. So I'd say this discussion is moot.. I'd say the decision is made and the guy that won, will get the majority of snaps this week in prep for the Vikes.. JMO however.

I agree. And i've seen Anderson suck it up enough for the past two years to let me know that it better be Brady Quinn.
We've all watched the games. And in 2007 it wasn't hard to see that Edwards, Winslow, Lewis and Cribbs had phenomenal seasons which made Anderson look much better than he is (plus our O-Line did a great job at pass blocking). Our two top players who were as good as pretty much anyone that year. Especially Kellen Winslow. He was money. That's why we won the gameswe did, that's why Anderson got the touchdowns. That and the fact that NFL teams we played were not prepared for him originally and we had an easy finish to our schedule that year.
I just don't see how anyone can watch the trash that we saw in 2008 and stay behind Derek Anderson. It was awful. Teams beat us by pressing KW2 hard at the LOS with a LB and then covering him with a safety. His innability to get off the LB after the ball was hiked, left us out to dry along with BE's slump. In my book Anderson rode the wave in 2007, and this was shown in 2008
Sure, Brady Quinn is an unknown product, but let us at least see what he has so we can find out next year if we're going to need a new QB again.
Starting DA is just a waste of time, while players can improve, I have seen very little which shows me anyting different than what I saw in 2007 when I recognized that the guys around him made him much better than what he was. Period. Fact is he's far too innaccurate to be a successful NFL QB. Two incompletions, and another unsuccessful run by Jamal Lewis mixed in with that leaves us nowhere.
My mind has not changed in a long time, if Mangini picks Anderson then we made a mistake when picking our head coach. That's it. It's beyond me how anyone can watch all the games of 2008 that DA played in and say that he deserves another shot. Especially when Quinn replaced him, got hurt, and Anderson came in absolutely unprepared and sucked it up. That really pissed me off.
I don't know about the guy as a person, but honestly, he's nothing more than a backup in my book as an NFL QB. May be Quinn is too, but at least let us find out........
And don't bring up the, you can do it without a decent QB. The Ravens pulled it off by having defensive players who were far beyond people of our current caliber. Guys like Ray Lewis, Rod Woodson, Ed Reed, Sam Adams, and a young healthy Jamal Lewis among other players. Teams that win have decent QBs, far ahead of anything that Anderson will ever bring to the table. We can look at the list and see that by looking through recent history. We can also take it further back if desired. 99 Elway, 2000 Warner, 2001 Dilfer (explained), 2002 Tom Brady, 2003 Brad Johnson (with Derek Brooks among other good players, and he's better than DA would ever be), Tom Brady, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger (more of a winner than DA will ever be, had that IT since playing at Miami of OHIO),Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Big Ben.
DA will never be at any of these player's caliber except Dilfer, who was lucky to play on a team as talented as he did. Starting Anderson is just wasting time in my book........
If Quinn is no good, then we need a new QB, and that's it.

Yeah .... after all, anyone could have thrown 29 TD passes 2 years ago like Anderson did. Look at all of the Browns QBs throughout the years to pass that milestone .......
I don't claim that Anderson is perfect .... nor do I claim that he will become perfect. What I do know is that many 1st time starters struggle towards the end of their 1st full season. Their arms wear down ... teams adjust to what they do well ...... there are injuries to supporting players, and they often start overthinking things.
If we look at last year, the Browns had essentially 1 WR and 1 TE. Anderson still had more TD passes than INTs.
I don't think that Anderson is a finished product ..... but neither is Quinn. We've had glimpses ... but that's really about it. I will be curous to see which way Mangini goes with this ... even though I have a pretty good idea that it will probably be the "safe" choice.

Do you think that Carucci or any of the national reporters are going to work off anything other than the preconceived notion that the Browns stink, until the Browns start playing well. DA and Quinn are both great quarterbacks, DA has to limit the interceptions, and Quinn has to move the offense. The really only other thing is they have to get points, points points points points points. They need a team urgency, because if you haven't noticed, it is way too easy to pass on the Browns pass defense.
So the Quarterback focus should give way the real focus, which should be
Offense, move the ball, don't turn over, positive plays, strong unity of protection.
Defense, focus on stopping the run and getting interceptions first, 2 find out why its as easy to convert 3rd and 18 against the Browns as it is 3rd and 2. Vote Eric Wright for pro-bowl, at least he's the top on my list to watch.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I find it pretty amazing that probably the youngest poster on the board is the first one to show any common sense.
Just because this douchebag of a reporter is upset that he hasnt been told who the #1 QB is no reason to believe that EM hasnt made a decision and actually the rest of the team knows who the #1 QB is too. This guy is just upset that the Browns arent stroking his ego and kissing up to him in order to get him to wrtie good things about them.

Updated 10:55 a.m.Browns coach Eric Mangini said Monday he's made his decision on a starting quarterback, but will keep his identity internal and not reveal it to the Vikings, Sunday's season opening opponent.
He said he will tell the two quarterbacks in the "near future'' in separate conversations with each of them. He said he'll explain to them why and how the decision was made. He said as a defensive coordinator, it's difficult to prepare for an offense when the quarterback is unknown.
He said he expects both quarterbacks to prepare as though they're the starter. He added that both have prepared and competed at a high level. "It was thorough and detailed and we looked at the whole body of work,'' said Mangini. "It was extensive. I feel strongly about the improvement both guys made.''

Another troublesome issue is that no playmakers have emerged during the summer.
This article just shows that the reporter hasnt watched or reported the games himself and looks to me like he is just going off other reports. Im going to make some points Im sure the other posters have made but Im going to post my thoughts anyways.
He says that neither QB has done enough to emerge as a clear cut winner. Actually, DA played well enough after the 1st game to not give Quinn a clear cut advantage. Idiot If he watched the games he would see that Edwards dropped a TD that led to an int. the next play. He would also know that some of the plays called were PRACTICE to see what the players could do. I saw the offensive playcalling as lets see who can do what. I really hope they dont call the many screens during the regular season. Like last year when they kept running slants to see who can make a play and were not using their motion offense that worked so well the year before.
The reporter states-"And for some reason, coach Eric Mangini decided that neither needed a fourth game to help determine the outcome of the competition, because both sat out Thursday night's preseason-finale at Chicago." Um obviosly a starter was chosen and that Mangini felt neither QB needed a 4th game. The exact opposite of what the reporter is reporting to make his story. The competition is obviosly over to anyone who was paying attention.
No playmakers have emerged I guess he has never heard of Cribbs. Edwards makes a few less drops he has a 1000 yard season. He wont be out of game shape from riding an exercise bike all preseason from a gashed ankle. James Davis played well enough to make people think Jamal Lewis might not make the team, even with Harrison not playing No playmakers have emerged but Davis was a top 5 rusher in the preseason I know that dont mean much since RBs have led the preseason in rushing and still not make a roster by week 1 but this writer obviosly wasnt watching the games.

You would have to be total dolt to be in that complex and with the team on a daily basis not know who the #1 QB is. You think EM is going to tell the media that Derek and Brady know which one is the starter? The guy is intentionally giving vague answers to the media and therefore the public and the critics are just eating it up.
