From today's game it appears my assumption that they could possibly win 7 games may be WAY optimistic..........

For all my bitching and moaning in the game thread, you've got to realize that the Browns best player has not been playing tonight in Shaun Rogers. He would definitely improve our rush D.

you had a good run Hank.

It was Game 1, pre-season.

I wouldn't get too down about 1 game.

They underperformed anyone's expectations but the truth is there are very few dynamic players on this team, it's a pretty young, inexperienced team and there's a brand new coach and system.

Many people here think the cupboard isn't as bare as it really is.

This is a 3 year project to get back into playoff contention, IF we do well in the draft and develop what little talent we do have into effective players.

It's awful to even consider a 3 year plan but the truth hurts sometimes.

Im not trying to rain on anyones parade, but with this defense...anything more than 5-11 is dreaming

this defense is awful....Rogers is the only good D player we have...and he can't do it all

look for a 29-31st ranked D...most likely close to last against the run...our secondary is not young, they are bad...Elam is the best DB we have and that isn't saying much....its going to be a long year

optimistic with this Defense?

are you insane?

Jim Mora would say "Are you nuts!?" playoffs!?, Playoffs?!, you kidding me, playoffs!?

I get you Held, but folks are going to be calling for Mangini's head really quick if it still looks like this. The Cleveland media will be putting him on death watch by the 6th game.

I also don't think Randy is going to have 3 years of patience.

If people had realistic expectations...like I preached previously....no one would be calling for anyone's head.

What happens is during the offseason people start to see change, they delude themselves by imagining the top end of every change and then all of a sudden you have a chasm between what is truth and what is hope.

Then the pitchforks come out once the truth comes to light.

If everyone took a deep breath and settled down we might turn this around in time. Maybe not again but what good is preaching 12-4 going to do anybody when there's no chance it will happen?

Hope, I guess. I don't know dawg, a lot of long seasons are wearing away at folks. Vers made a comment once about how folks always get so happy when the change happens but don't wait long enough for things to get built so we get another tear down. I'm really hoping the season isn't this bad, otherwise we're looking at another tear down.

I never get too down about the Browns. I'm too old with too long a memory for that....

But I hardly think looking at a possible 7-9 record is being overly optimistic. At least I didn't before last night.

I guess we'll see what happens against the Lions next week.

I understand why "fans" are jumping off the bandwagon already, the game was sick.

The reality is though, that we play a Very soft schedule this year and can expect a near .500 season on that alone. GB is a legit and quality offense and ithey whooped us, but the Lions, broncos, Bears, and Chiefs are bad teams that we should have much better success against.

GB showed the signs of being a team with some continuity and organization. That's something we lack. I've seen my Browns look much much worse. I'm thinking GB is going to be a handful for anyone this year.

Rubin was looking OK. Wimbley showed a couple of flashes. Furrey had a nice game. The QB's? It's a race to the bottom of the barrel for both of them as far as I'm concerned.

I will say the team looked more disciplined overall. Compared to some of the moronic penalties GB received, the Browns were pretty clean.

The one time I saw the D bring a real blitz, it was a beautiful thing.

There's plenty of time to start whining and complaining. The Cleveland sporting press is just waiting for the chance to go after Mangini. Screw 'em.

J.

I gotta say after that game, I'm a little more optimistic than some. Even though it was a vanilla D, they did more blitzing than I ever saw under Romeo. Even though it was a futile offensive effort, they did more adjusting and changing plays then I ever saw under Romeo. Given the expectation of progress in the system and benefitting form one QB when a starter is named (I think Quinn), we should expect to see improvement as the season goes on.

I think something in the ballpark of 6-10 is realistic. I see two wins vs. cincy, one vs. baltimore, Detroit, KC and Oakland. Probably not going to beat the Steelers again this year, and that hurts, but if we stick with a plan for 3-4 years, we will get there.

...the defense is going to be more aggressive this year and I can't wait.

I can certainly wait for a LB that will help us. We should have made a LB pick in the second round instead of Massiquoi or waited until 5th round for Phillips, Beckwith or Brinkley as LBs and used our 2nd for a RT. We could have taken WIlliams form KY who was used as a DE and LB and got 15 sacks in the SEC and saved our 2nd for a safety. I have never heard of a Hawaii LB doing anything in the NFL. Still no viable LBs.

The way I see it is this, if "Mangenious" doesn't name the starting QB in Sunday mornings Plain Dealer, after the Lions game, we may go 4-12 again. If he does name the QB by then we could go 6-10. The longer he plays the head games, the worse we are going to be. If he in fact pulls a Romeo and waits till the regular season starts, we might even go 3-13 and 0-6 in the division.

I understand why it seems that way, but it's not based on any history....

in 2006, Mangini has a 3-way QB battle and doesn't decide on Penny until preparing for week1....Jets go 10-6

in 2007, Browns don't decide on starter until halftime of week1, Browns go 10-6

in 2008, Cardinals don't decide on a starter until week4 of preseason, Cardinals go 9-7, but also come within 2 minutes of winning the superbowl.

naming a starter doesn't seem to have much effect on record (i'm sure i can find the oppposite records for these things too).
