I'm interested in hearing what others in here have tried or are currently supplementing.

I started doing the whey protein and have had positive results after about 4-5 weeks. I'm not a gym rat, but I do work out about 4 times a week. The reason I decided to do the whey was because I started having muscle strains from time to time. I guess that stuff happens when you turn 30.

I've also done creatine in the past, btu my main goal is to be stronger not necessarily bigger.

Supplemental protein is good if you're dieting or the overall diet is lacking. A multi vitamin and mineral cap, fish oil caps and a reasonably balanced diet is all that is needed. Given you're over 30 I'd add some saw palmetto. I'm sold on the fish oil for the essential fatty acids that are lacking in just about everyone's diet. Most other supplements are a waste of money.

The only other supplement I've seen worth a damn is milk thistle....and that's only if you drink a lot. It detoxifies the liver. I know of two people whose high liver enzymes returned to normal after taking it (and not really cutting down on the alcohol).

I currently take whey and casein protein along with a multi, fish oil, glucosamine/chondrotin (joint health) and CLA. I will sometimes throw in creatine and take a nitric oxide booster on the days I lift.

This is what I'm "using":

Zero Impact Bars
Xtend
Waxy Maize Starch
Gold Standard Whey Protein
An standard Multi Vitamin

My next big step, if I can find the money, is to start juicing. No, not steroids...buying a juice machine. These guys at work SWEAR by the stuff. They were working out with P90X, doing all the supplements, and getting enough rest but the gains weren't drastic enough. They bought juicers and then BAM! They started shedding more bady fat and building more muscle. And it's mostly veggies, not all fruit.

...something to think about.

I'll have to look into the fish oil. That "juicer" and the milk thistle sound interesting too.

Please look in to a fish oil that doesn't smell. There is nothing worse than a person who reeks of fish oil supplements and doesn't even know they stink.

Plus, not many other supplements have been shown to be effective. These things are not tested in any way and fall outside the jurisdiction of the FDA due to archaic homeopathy laws.

You just have to eat after you take them, otherwise you get the "fish burps".

No...there are some that actually come through your pores. Trust me, I happened to be behind a family member on an escalator once that wasn't burping. I said, "are you taking fish oil"? She said, "Yes, but I'm not burping." The tantalizing conversation went on from there.

Behind them on the escalator would put your nose right behind their ... um... behind. So it might have come out the other end....

If I were a woman I'd probably blame it on the fish caps also.

Fish oil is good for the heart, brain, and blood...if it made me smell like fish, so be it.

Salmon doesn't smell so bad...

Jay...had to admit that made me laugh, even if crude.

Oh, I know it's good for the body...just SOME brands make people smell. It's a well-known fact. Check out vitamin/supplement boards sometime.

Only boards I check are browns related.

The ones I take don't leave any odor....and I would be honest....I can smell when I eat a large amount of garlic as an example...I am vain enough I don't want to smell like a Cod.

What brands do you recommend?

What the hell does fish oil do anyways?

I use Finest Natural....from Walgreens...it's list of fish used is the kind you want...and I don't smell like a darn fish

I have asked 2 separate owners of health food stores and my own MD the same question...if I could take only one supplement(other than a multi) for general health purposes, what should I take?. All 3 said fish oil..that is all I needed to hear.
