Football coachs have been referred to as generals for years. IMO Mangini and Kokinis have followed the teachings of Sun Tzu as they have prepared for their first season here.
Although Mark Twain was a very entertaining author, I really don't see any of his works relating to strategy or tactics, perhaps I should re-read the jumping frog of cadaverous county.
*LOL* ... GREAT GREAT BLURB in a GREAT GREAT POST!!! .... for anyone that skimmed over it .. its the last post on page 1 .. it is well worth the time to go back and read it ...
Truthful, Funny and the epitome of HITTING THE NAIL ON THE HEAD ... as did the rest of the post ... BRAVO .. if there were a standing O emicon I'd place it here ..
and what makes it even bettter is it comes directly from the mouth of one of Twains characters .. makes it kind of hard to argue the point .....
If one so gramatically challenged as me can be allowed to take a stab at combining the Sun and Twain .. I believe the quote would look like this and boil it down to the bare essentials ....
WINNING is ENTERTAINING ....
and winning is best achieved (and this is me .. not Sun or Mark .. ) .. by holding your cards close to your vest .... regardless of what the media or Held thinks about the entertainment value of it ..
Thanks for the post Huck .. it made me laugh and made a great point all at the same time .. and thats always a wonderful thing ...

Thanks Diam I did find it funny that Held suggest that "HuckleBerry" read up on some Twain. Props for picking up on that. Glad my post entertained you, I have enjoyed reading yours over the years as well as some of the replies. so I still owe ya some!

eo - you really have to lighten up. I'm not attacking you. Heck I don't even have anyone that agrees with me on this post. So if anyone should have a blindfold on and a cigarette it's me. I'm trying to make you laugh, and it's for some reason causing you a coronary.
I have worked for a time at a paper. I understand a little more than most what goes on at a sports desk. It's not an easy gig coming up with story angles when news is slow and access to coaches, players or even a view of what is going on is cut off.
It's easy for people here to redicule the press. There have been people like Roger Brown who insult all journalistic standards. But there are also people like Doerschuck and Pluto and many others who try to do it right. When journalists don't have direct access they have to find other avenues and it impacts the quality of the reporting. News has to go out on the Browns, appropriate access or not. The paper doesn't run off the press blank.
And to Huckleberry, glad you got half of it. I like your posts so far.
And one last thing....
I really want the Browns to do great. I grew up in NE Ohio and loved the time spent with family watching games at home and at the stadium. I also love the strategy of 11 on 11 because of it's complexity. I does remind me quite a bit of another love, chess, and I enjoy talking about football a great deal.
But I think there is another love reserved for those who connect their own personal psyche/worth to the team. I know people who can't function properly for a few days after a loss to the Steelers. I know people who go seem to be on a cocaine bender after a great win. And I think those are the people who need to realize that the NFL is a form of entertainment. It won't make Cleveland appear differently to the rest of the country. It won't have a great impact on the economy. Has it made Pittsburgh a glorious city? hahaha
So to those that tie in the Browns to their own feeling of self worth... remember to breathe in and breathe out a little.

And to Huckleberry,
Its Mr. Finn to U ....
while I agree some take it way to seriously .. it is alot more than entertainment to me ... I LOVE the Browns ... they've been a part of my life since I was a young young lad .. I wll never forget the first time I went to the Muni .. who brought me .. who was with me .. how scared i was when i finally turned around after walking up all those stairs and saw how STEEP it was up there ..
and when i was younger I was bummed for a few days after a Stilers loss but functioned quite well and still enjoyed life ... and after a few big wins I have been known to party into the wee hours of the night ... but those were few and far between ..
now I'm over a loss to the Stilers before the kick off to the 4 PM games ... and after 3 or 4 beers I can't function for 3 or 4 days so thats my limit after a big win ..... well i think it will be anyhow .. will let u know after we have one .... *L* ..
but this is way more than entertainment to me ... and to many many others .. and my guess that includes U ....
the best way to sum it up at least for me is like this ....
when Friends or All in the Family went off the air ... I was slightly bummed for a day or two but was easily over it .. when the Browns went to B-More ... i cried .... and was beside myself and felt like i LOST A PART OF ME ... I literally did not know what to do with those feelings .. how could there be no Cleveland Browns ...
and the following fall when football started I cried again ... and again felt like a part of me was missing ...
and then when we came back .. i cried again ... tears of joy ... and screamed at the top of my lugns when Couch threw the TD to KJ I believe int he corner of the end zone ..
sorry bro ... but naaaaaa .. thats not just entertainment ..
and besides ... even if this was just entertainment for us .. ITS SURE AS ALL HELL AIN'T FOR THE COACHES ...
as Huck pointed out from somewhere on his raft floating down the Mississippi (can u believe i spelled it right .. *L*) ... for them ,, its all about WINNING!!!
U son of a B ... now I'm crying again just reflecting ...

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to tie my feelings of self worth to my team. As a diehard Browns fan the last decade would have put me in the looney bin. But like you and most all that frequent this board i do love football and the browns. And guess what? I do get it. Pro sports are entertainment. But losing 10+ in a row to your rival ain't that entertaining. My point was that we need to focus on winning, all the rest will come when that starts happening on a consistent basis. If that means giving up all the fluff articles and coach speak and evry little detail on injuries so be it. We've had all that since we came back and all that crap does is raise expectations and fan the fires of hope. When we get competitive the reporters will find stories that sell and satisfy the masses.I know it sounds cliche but winning really does cure everything. I feel Mangini has a plan and I like the way he's going about it. "Breathe in, Breathe out, Move on." ~Jimmy Buffett~

Damn right My dad took me up to watch Jimmy Brown (givong away my age there) My oldest went to muni with me his first time and saw Pruit destroy Kansas City. I think he went through like 5 of those rip away jerseys. My youngest though, he's 18. He hasn't seen crapola. Add to that fact that he grew up a Browns fan living in Steeler country ..... He's had a Couch jersey, green, droughns, and winslow, LOL He played LT in High Scool so he should be safe with the Joe Thomas jersey finally. To the casual fan...it's entertainment To life long browns fans it's soo much more. Family, pride, tradition, and undying loyalty. To the coach it's his livlihood, and hopefully, some of those same things it is to us. Damn, I miss my Dad

Yep, to most of us it's a mix of the team, family, friends, and all those memories. People who just see it as a hobby or entertainment like a television show will never get it, but those of us who do completely understand one another.

Browns football is a way of life. It's in the blood, and only those who share that bond really understand it.

"I'm trying to make you laugh, and it's for some reason causing you a coronary."
hehehe... well there is a reason I've had several.
Well just a clue if you haven't gotten it yet... for some reason I haven't found it humorous...lol
But whatever anguish I have with a post - trust me its short lived and no I'm not a gemini. I just don't hold out on any emotion any more...I let loose and its over n done. If you wish to say...Nothing personal and lets just get back to talking Football. I'm all for it.
Huckleberry...thank you for the humor and wit...now that actually makes me *L* (chuckle) and I don't have to figure if its written for us to laugh.
Oh btw Diam - the standing Ovation Emoticon? closest I could come up with
man just one more month till some football...can we survive without complete anarchy? I'll try my best.
