I have been trying to determine if a buzz cut and/or also if a well kept beard is professional looking. I have been looking online and cannot seem to find anything definitive. I have thin receding hair and I think I look better with a short buzz on top and a beard. However, I work in a professional setting and was wondering if this look is acceptable. 2 questions:

Is a short buzz cut professional looking for a balding man?
single choice

This thread is useless without pictures.

Seriously, though, it would be best if we could see the choices.

Michelle - I am what you would call the typical male. My wife makes me take the pictures, so I am hardly ever in them.

What's funny is that I let my hair grow on top since January and its all of 2.5 inches long. My 4 1/2 year old son says it looks fuzzy when I don't have any gel in it. Problem with the gel is that it makes me look even more bald. I liked my look when I had the beard and the buzz, but I did notice my sales drop a bit. After I shaved the beard and started growing my hair out, I hit some sales right away. Monday I start work at a new place and I am deciding how I should look showing up - hence, the poll.

Well, in that case, we need more options.

We can make sure you're let go within a week.

Just messin' my man. Good luck with the new job. Hope you're not known as the funny looking new guy when you start.

Then I vote for the Fu Manchu mustache and a mohawk.

Thanks for all the comments. I decided to buzz the head already. Still debating the beard. And yes, I am taking in a few different sources of opinions to decide what I am going to do. My preference is to have the beard with the buzz, but I just wasn't sure about it.

You can always grow it out.

The pattern of the baldness is the key.

Some people look fine. It isn't unusual for men to lose their head hair......but if you are just losing it more or less on one side, then you best just cut it short.

Just don't do a comb over unless you just comb the hair straight back...those are ok. Side to side, not so much. If the part is about a inch above your ear you get that Gene Keady look going.

Not cool.

buzz cuts are professional, especially for men losing hair. Well groomed beards are professional. The only thing I don't like is when the beard hair (even if it's well groomed) is significantly longer than the hair on your head. I don't think that looks professional. JMHO.

I personally have a buzz cut and a short trimmed goatee... and I look AMAZING!!!!!

Interesting feedback. Thanks! I have decided to go with the buzz cut and no beard. I may revisit this as I will be working from home a lot and I don't generally shave unless I have to.

I have had a buzzcut and a neatly trimmed stash forever and never heard any complaints about my "professionalism", except maybe that time a co-worker's phone handle and earpiece was loaded up with Cornhuskers Lotion, or maybe when another co-worker had a message to call a Mr. Lyon at a phone number that turned out to be the Cleveland Zoo ...
My point is, professionalism is much more about how you comport yourself and how you perform than how you look. I have met many so-called professionals with flawless appearances that turned out to be reptiles and insects.

Is shaving your head an option? Some men don't want to do that because they don't like the shape of their head. And some women also want to have their men with some hair.

But if it's an option, consider it. I always told myself that if I were to go bald, I'd just shave my head. Well, that's what happened. I started going bald early and by the time I was 25, I started shaving my head. It was the best choice I ever made.

I also have a goatee, and I am a professional as well. As long as you are groomed and hygenic, it shouldn't matter. After awhile, people won't notice and won't care and it will be your work that is what gets the focus.

Besides, the shaved look is kind of in now. But guys like you and me don't have much choice.

Yes and Yes.

I don't associate a person's appearance with whether that person is a professional or not.
