Any dawgs on here live in NYC?

I got a job offer and i'm so tempted to move there...but it's in the 50s(k)...not much to get by on for sure...however it's good nuf to just get by and that is all i care about...i just wanna experience NYC life before i get too old to do this...

Just wondering if anyone lives out there...and what are good areas to look for apt in? The job is close to midtown....1stave and 26th st....so it's all the way on the east side..

I'm currently looking at queens and brooklyn....i've found stuff for as low as 700 to as high as 3000 a month...lol my friends tell me usually the really low rent places are either in someones house whos renting a room...or it's a communial housing..like a dorm...which blows...i don't mind living with roomies...but i don't wanna live out of someones garage or basement...

I think i can afford something thats close to 1200/month. at the max

I guess mostly i'm just looking for someone to tell me if they know of a safe yet cheap(er) areas to live....like queens is better then brooklyn etc etc..

I moved out to Jersey a few years ago but I work in the city and lived there for years. That area you'd be working is called either Grammercy Park or Turtle Bay, it's a good area but kinda far from any of the trains. You'd be on the L or the 4-5-6 for your commute probably. Brooklyn would be the logical choice. But the good parts are just about as expensive as Manhattan. Queens was sorta up and coming before the economy hit the skids but it's definitely not as polished or gentrified as lots of Brooklyn. Long Island City in Queens is funky/cool. In this economy you might look at Manhattan. I think a lot of rental buildings are willing to cut deals right now.

Keep this in mind, and it's hard for out of towners to wrap their heads around this,,, NY's devote a much higher percentage of income to living space generally than other people do. It's pretty common that people spend 40 or 50% of income on living space. Obviously on 50K (which BTW is enough to survive on in NYC) that leaves you thin but $1200/mo isn't going to find you much unless you go out at least a few stops into Queens/Brooklyn. Nowhere particularly hip or interesting. You didn't mention if that stuff is important to you or not but it was kind of important to me back in the day... to be in a cool vibrant hood with good hangs and life on the streets, galleries and coffee shops etc. Might not matter to you though. Obviously having a chill commute is key. Keep it under two trains. When looking at apartments, get the address and look on a map to see proximity to trains... cant stress this enough.

Your best bet is to visit for a week and go to a bunch or craigslist roommate wanted apartments. NY isn't for everyone but everyone I know that's lived here, even if for just a little while, have lots of stories and it has broadened their world view pretty significantly. I know people that move form the midwest and basically live the same life.... work, go home watch tv, hit the gym, work, home etc etc. Depends on what kind of person you are, how open and and willing you are to really dive in and do different stuff. Like anywhere else it is what you make of it but you can blow your own mind on weekly basis if your so inclined to in NY. Just take the job and figure all that stuff after. That's the story for probably like half of NYC's residents.

I've always wondered what it'd be like to live in NYC.

But in the end, I think I'll stick with finding a spot in downtown Cleveland or Coventry.

I live in Central Jersey, about a 45 minute train ride into Midtown. I LOVE it here and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

NYC is really expensive, especially if you wanna live in Manhattan. My advice is look for a roommate, or, try finding a place in one of the other boroughs. I think Queens is a little cheaper then Brooklyn, and the Bronx might be even cheaper, but that will be a long commute for Midtown. Queens might be your best bet, and looking for a roommate might not be so bad either.

Each neighborhood has its own character, and they change all the time. Right now Jackson Heights is the hip neighborhood to live in. I think Williamsburg is up and coming too. You might want to look into those

Happy hunting, and I hope you move out here. I would KILL to live in NYC! But, I like having more than 200 sq feet to myself.

My buddy lives in long island city queens....if i got this job last month i could have moved into his apt....1300/month.

What are the untilities like? what part did u live in when u lived in the city?

When i'm on citycribs.com i see these really nice looking apts for 800-900 bucks...in the pics they show 1 bedroom a nice living room a kitchen/bathroom...and it's NOT a studio....i'm very puzzled by this..as ppl tell me that is impossible.

http://www.citycribs.com/listing/13834520 check that out...
It's with Cable and Local Phone. Great Art-work and a flat Screen

TV. Queen Sized bed and a full kitchen and a nice bathing room and

all appliances are new. Laundry on Premises. The building also has

fitness and health center in it and an High speed Internet Access

(Wi-Fi). Cooking Utensils Provided

This sounds too good to be true...i'm going to get one of my buddies to go check it out this weekend.

I'm with ya Clay. If i can't get in my car and be out in the country within 5 minutes then the town is too big for me.

Good Luck with the search Buck.

I did a search on that address (which is an awesome neighborhood btw) and came up with some very different prices....
http://www.cityrealty.com/new-york-city/apartment/rentals/for-rent/11-east-1st-street/45031
....lol. I thought it sounded fishy because I did a bunch of work in a building on the same block and rents in that building were between $5000 and 40K/mo. What's wierd is that if you refresh the page the two ads for buildings on the right are both buildings I'm working in or have worked in.. Silver Towers and a bunch of Glenwood stuff. Both very very nice and the search engine obviously knows that if you're in the market for that place.. you might like to step up a little more, lol.

I'll tell you a little unfortunate not so well kept secret. Rental brokers clog the search engines and craigslist like crazy. Some are easy to spot because they post the same sorts of things over and over. It's not a scam really, they just get you to call with the teaser then "oh yea that one rented this morning but I have some others you might be interested in". Yes you can find a place through a broker but in general you don't need them and will save money if you do the leg work yourself. I know a lot of people get really freaked out by this process, finding an apt in NY. If your friend is in LICity I'd plan a visit for a week prior to your job start and hit Craigslist etc. I'm sure he'd have some suggestions as well. A lot of stuff happens word of mouth. IN your price range you're probably looking for a roommate situation. I'd never walk into one of those blind, always go and meet and suss it out first. Or find a $2500-3000/mo 1 bedrm that you can devide up into two units and get a friend to move in with you.

To answer your other question I've lived in a few spot in China Town and the lower east side way back (which was a little dangerous back then but very hip for musicians and artists and gentrifying alot as we speak), I lived on 22nd off 9th which was very gay (couched it with my gay Uncle when I was between joints and my band was touring a lot) but safe and good hood and he had an awesome apartment, I lived in a band rehearsal space for about 6 months on 39th & 8th (Hell's Kitchen) which was grungy and funky but cool in other ways, and for 3 years on 79th and & Amsterdam which is very cool and easy though also very gentrified and getting a little "nice". But a little perspective... I bought a 4 bedroom 2.5 bthrm house about 5 minutes from the GW Bridge and my mortgage etc is about the same as my rent was on the upper west side.

Dude, If you have the opportunity to make 50,000 a year, and live in NYC, you gotta do it bro. Get outta here for a few years. It may be the time of your life.

As far as finding a place - you'll find a way to make it work, just do it.

- Having said that, I'm confident that after a few years of living in NYC, you'll be ready to leave. - I have a few friends who lived there. - We had a great time in NYC, but now, most of those friends are back here, or in Florida.

Get out there dude, have a good time man!

$50k is unfortunately not much in NYC. That's like $25k in Ohio.

DUDE!! Go for it!! Screw the money and all that, this can be a great experience for you. Do it now while you are young and you dont have anything tying you down. Yeah its expensive to live in NYC but you can get by. Do not pass this chance up or you will one day regret it. If I didnt have a wife and kids hell I would go and be your roommate.

I lived on roughly that amount for a time in NYC...and I loved it.

It can be frustrating...but it's really a great experience...and on top of that...NYC has far more high paying gigs than anywhere else...so you may live on a string for awhile...but the ladder is much higher out there...six-figure jobs are everywhere if you make the right moves.

One plus is you don't need a car in NYC, so you can save money there, just buy a subway pass.

Just be careful not to take the Greenline 2:06am train...ever. (ref: The Midnight Meat Train movie)

I agree. If you want to live in NY...in the city, you really need to make about 110k a year without living on a pretty tight string.

I love Mayberry RFD. I love living in a small town and community. Were their is little traffic, everybody knows everybody, and the world moves at a slower pace. I get picked on at work by the sales people all the time because 90 percent of the customers we get know me or somebody in my family. We don't have traffic problems, or long lines, cost of living is really low, crime rate is low. I just really love small town life.

This is simply not true at all Peen.

If you have no obligations to anyone but yourself, you can get by. For example, my friends live in Brooklyn. The three of them. They each have their own room, a kitchen, and a living room. They pay 3000 a month total.

Then, you pay about 100? dollars a month for the unlimited subway pass. That comes out to about 13,500 a year right there in expenses. Otherwise, besides a couple taxes, you pay what you pay.

Sure, when you go to the bar in Manhattan it's 5 dollars a beer, in Brooklyn 4 dollars a beer. But that's how it is in Connecticut also.

May be 110 if you have a family. But, if you are a young guy, you should be able to do it for 50k. You might need a roommate, but that's just fine.

Myself, I'm going to grad school in NYC and i'm moving to the Bronx (because of the location of the school verses Manhattan. It's not the best place, but I should find a studio apartment for about 1000 a month for myself where I can focus on my school work and not worry about roommates, etc.

Places I recommend you live if you're in Brooklyn, I hear Williamsburg? is very cool. My friends live in Greenpoint, which is a great community. Polish neighborhood, very safe. If my school wasn't at the worst possible place for that, i'd want to move there.

If you're looking for Manhattan, the higher numbers, before Harlem (like low 100) I hear is safe enough and the rent isn't that bad. I have a buddy who pays 1300 a month and he rooms with another guy. But they each have their own bedrooms. So the key is to find a roommate. That's how it's affordable. I dunno about single studios or anything. And don't expect to find an apartment like Jerry Seinfeld's, lol. They're just not that big in Manhattan unless you're looking to spend $$$$$

A lot of it depends on how old you are BrownsBuck, but as I said, I'm moving there too. May be we can meet up on Sundays at a bar so I have some company for the game

PS: My friends live on 40-50K a year except the one in Manhattan who's probably like 70 (he's an accountant)

I have a couple friends in NYC (I was just there over the weekend). You can get by on 35k if you want to... Neither of them made much more than that when they first got there. They both make a lot more now. One still lives in Hoboken and the other lives somewhere midtown....

Sure.......if you want 3 roommates each in their own room and the luxury of a kitchen and living room...I assume they even have a bathroom with hot water.

College living is great for some.

i'm 25...and they all said i'm a moron for not going to NYC. I'm starting to believe them now....i hate this job i got here in columbus...it's 50hours min a week...sometimes 60-65 depending on whats going on that week. and since i'm salary there is no such thing as OT.

However the NYC job wasn't any great time wise...it was 7pm-3am...and it was 88hours/2 weeks.

Welcome to the real world. Many of us put in that many hours, if not more. Granted, many don't as well.

Actually, 88 hours over 2 weeks? I wouldn't complain about those hours at all. You want overtime? Work in a factory. Heck, when I was selling cars I worked a minimum of 53 hours a week - and that was only if I could leave when we "closed". And that wasn't with "overtime", nor was it salary. That's commission.

You have a job. Feel good about that. Look around and see all the people that don't have jobs. You might change your tune about 50 hours a week minimum.

I'm lucky - many weeks I only work 30 hours. But often times I work 55 even still. And often times I get this little thought in my head that goes something like "I deserve better", but as soon as that thought hits my head I think "It could be worse - alot worse." So I put a smile on my face and work. And I don't complain.

By the way - a 7 pm to 3 am job - what was the job?

Maybe I have you confused with someone else - but I thought you were working in biology, or micro biology, or some science field.

Since you turned the job down, tell us what it was.
