I know he's old, but if you want to increase sack totals he may be the man to increase them, even at 33.

77 sacks in 11 years is a 7/year average. Not bad.

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys released Greg Ellis on Tuesday, ending the linebacker's tenure in Dallas after 11 seasons and the eighth-most sacks in team history.
Greg Ellis, DE/LB

Career Statistics
Sacks: 77
Passes Defensed: 35
Interceptions: 4

The announcement was no surprise. One week before, team owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were planning to cut Ellis if he couldn't be traded.

The Cowboys bypassed wide receiver Randy Moss to take Ellis with the eighth overall pick in the 1998 draft. Ellis had 77 sacks and 634 tackles in 162 games and led Dallas in sacks six times.

Ellis was a defensive end for most of that time, then moved to linebacker when former coach Bill Parcells changed to a 3-4 defense. Ellis grumbled at first, then tore his Achilles' tendon. He returned in 2007 and had his best season with 12.5 sacks in 13 games, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

And the next head coach is ......

I'd have no issue with him but a) I think he might be more effective with his hand on the ground in a 4-3 and b) I'm shocked the Patriots haven't already inked him. Seems like their kind of guy.

It wouldn't seem that a guy like Ellis would fit Mangini's plan, and a bottom-feeding team like the Browns wouldn't seem like the first choice for a guy like Ellis.

Having said that, we need pass-rush help desperately, so if Ellis doesn't garner much interest, I'd love to sign him as a 3rd-down rush specialist. That's all he's likely to be at this point in his career.

The team that would seem to be a good fit would be the 'Skins, as they are always looking for expensive re-treads on the downsides of their careers

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

Am I the only one who seems to think if we can come to a reasonable contract with him, he would be worth picking up? We're rebuilding, he has played with good teams and Mangini wants to build a winning culture right?

OK, what have you done with Toad... YOU SIR ARE OBVIOUSLY AN IMPOSTER.

Why would you even consider that Toad? Haven't we had enough with Big Ted and Willie? I'd rather take a chance on these young guys panning out.
I mean what does he possibly have in the tank, one or two years? I don't see us making a legit run for the Super Bowl in those two years, do you?

He had a lot of sacks but he also had alot of quality support around him...

IMHO- He would be mediocre here at best

I'm surprised the patriots haven't swooped in and signed Ellis. It seems like just the thing they do, a bunch of older, interchangeable linebackers.

I don't see anything wrong with checking him out for league minimum money- but in the end that is up to Ellis. He knows the 3-4, he probably has a few more years in the right scenario. And he probably has a few other options out there- KC, Denver.....

The player doesn't look like an improvement, I"m speculating his numbers were a result of how they used him more than just him being an outstanding player. It is not like he is Dwight Freeney. With less than 100 days until the Minnesota opener they need the team to work together.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I wouldn't mind getting Ellis. He is a good player who can rush the passer and stop the run. Kind of like a Willie McGinnest earlier in his career, but not quite as good.
