Rob has said repeatedly that he thinks he can get Wimbley to improve and become a better player.

What do you think? Do you think Ryan can improve Wimbley enough to be the player we all want him to be? Is it too late for Kam?

Personally, with Ryan's ability to develop the linebackers for the Raiders, plus being a former Pats LBers coach, I wouldn't doubt him at this point but I wouldn't say it's likely either. Wimbley is old enough to where it's going to be hard to break his habits.

I think he can improve him, but not to the point we want him at. We all want Wimbley to be a DeMarcus Ware, or a Shawne Merriman, but he's never going to be a player near that calibre.

We can sit here all spring & summer debating that question which i'm sure many will, but until I see it on the field, his words mean nothing to me.

the optimist in me says that with new, less conservative coaching, we can see improvement in wimbley.

i think the bigger question, though, is can we find/develop that 2nd pass rusher so wimbley isn't the only player offenses focus on. I think just doing that would make wimbley a lot better.

I don't see how Ryan can't improve the kid's game. Merely mixing up his assignment would do wonders.

I don't think Kam will ever live up to Savage's intentions. But he can be a useful piece of the puzzle.

Nope, Wimbley has no instincts...he doesn't hold to point of attack. He's not a good pass rusher, too predictable.

Ryan sees a physically gifted player, he's like any coach, he thinks that he can tweak something here or there, and boom a good player.

I think you keep him, as a backup. But hopefully not relying on him to start, cuz he has a big bullseye on his chest in the running game.

Well... if anybody can improve Kam's game, it'll be a guy like Ryan. I'm no expert, but he showed what he's CAPABLE of his rookie season. He's got the tools for the position and I don't think he is soft at all. It looks to me like he's still thinking WAY too much out there. Could be that the light just hasn't come on for him yet (and maybe it won't -- tweeners go like that: sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't). Could be that he hasn't been coached well enough. Could be that our DEs either were not very good or they were injured and ineffective. Could be that our scheme was too predictable. Could be a combination of all the above.

Time will tell. If Rob thinks he can do some things to make Kam a better player or use him more effectively, I'm willing to let him go to work on the kid (and the rest of the defense for that matter) before I start calling the kid a bust and wanting him out of here. We'll see...

I've come to believe the same thing. He's another quiet storm. Massive specimen, athletic freak who lacks the killer instinct. Great guy. Intelligent. Soft spoken. Too damn nice.

I do think he can be schemed to be more effective that he has been but doubt he'll ever be a real force to be reckoned with.

He played a lot of last season with a groin IIRC. That'd slow anyone down. He also got doubled or chipped a lot which was easy to do since his role was so predictible. But even if he was not predictible, he just lacks that mean streak that's needed to tear some chit up.

well, he can't get any worse, can he???

As has been said by others, maybe if the schemes change, or another rusher to take some of the attention off of him is added, then maybe we see some improvement.

He will probably not reach the stud level that we all hoped. Just don't see it happening.

I def think Jackson is way better then kam right now....he had an amazing year last year...hope he continues to get better under Ryan...

As for Kam, um...it's hard to say...i mean he has been in the league for a long time now..and if he hasn't figured out how to get to the QB, then it's not something the coach can teach...i don't know if he will ever be a dobule digit sack guy...he might get better don't get me wrong but he won't be that edge rusher we want him to be.

I think a good way to improve Wimbley would be to put a successful pass rusher on the opposite side of him.

The last three seasons Wimbley has been are only legit pass rushing threat; so opposing teams could scheme to stop him because there was no one else to stop.

Last year Wimbley had Willie McGinest opposite him. Don't get me wrong, Willie had his moments, but he was far from his days on the Patriots last year registering only 1 sack. At times Alex Hall played opposite Wimbley. While Hall may have untapped potential, last season he was a rookie in over his head.

In 2007 the main pass rushers opposite Wimbley were again McGinest, and this time, Antwan Peek. Both of these players are hardly good enough to take the attention away from Wimbley.

I think the best way to improve Wimbley's play is to have someone else who can rush the passer opposite him. Whether that player is not currently on the roster or it is Alex Hall or someone else, that player needs to be found for Wimbley to have success and for the team to have success.

I doubt it.

He played for Bobby Bowden and Mickey Andrews.

I don't like either one of them, but I have to give respect where deserved.....those guys know the game, and they can teach the game.

It's not like Wimbly was fresh off the banana boat when he was drafted by the Browns.

See while Wimbley isn't great, he has improved his ability against the run. While he certainly doesn't have good instincts and has trouble getting off blockers to make the hit, he does put in the effort and he could be a decent pass rush specialist. 3rd and long, he's a good option alongside a better OLB

With all that being said, it was a new position for him to adapt to. I agreed with the poster who said that he needs someone on the other side to help take some pressure off him. JMHO.

Too damned bad that's not what he was brought here to do, nor is it his primary responsibility.

I would also say his efforts against the run aren't special. Pedestrian on his best day is probably more accurate.

Finally, what I see when I see Wimbley is a guy who's soft at the point of attack. He's far-too often neutralized by just ONE blocker, and this past year, teams didn't even bother putting two guys on him. They didn't have to.

Wimbley is a speed rusher and nothing more. He'll never be anything more. That makes him a wasted pick. Look for him to be gone after 2009.

"See while Wimbley isn't great, he has improved his ability against the run."

That is a regurgitated claim made by someone in hopes to justify picking him in the 1st round, and simply isn't true.
He may very well have been the worse OLB against the run in the entire NFL.
The double-teams and chip blocks, yeah, occasionally, hell everyone gets doubled and chipped from time to time.
He isn't a player that needed to be schemed. He does one thing well, the outside speed rush, and because that's all he can do,he's easily stopped.

I don't really know.. nobody does, but I think that wimbley is what he is and I doubt anyone can make him better.. except himself. He's got the physical tools.... something is missing.. if Ryan can get inside his head somehow and find a button to push... then maybe. but I have my doubts..

I hope to hell I'm wrong.

Wimbley's biggest problem is that he hasn't developed from thinking through what he's doing and reacting instinctively. Sometimes the transition isn't easy. It is a different position and it's taking him longer to adjust. In my opinion he will be able to make that adjustment, it's just not happened as quickly as some would like.

I just sort of scanned through some of the threads.....and saw a few posts saying that if we got another pass rusher opposite Wimbley that it might help...and I wanted to give my opinion due to the concerns I have with Mangini INC.....first off, we had a chance in FA to maybe aquire a pass rusher to help him....didn't happen.....in fact, not only did that not happen, we actually managed to aquire a few more holes in the process.....so, now our option will have to be in the draft.....well, not only do we need a pass rusher, we need a saftey / DB....at least a one WR, an OL of some sort....LB's....etc.., etc....I think you get my point.....So, I for one would like to go after Curry if he is still there at #5, but the way things are looking, it's possible that he may be gone...so, I guess if that happens, Orakpo and Brown are left, and that will hopefully fill the need for the edge pass rusher we need....but god help us at the rest of our positions.....

Jr.. you maybe right.. don't know. seems to me however that after an 11 sack rookie season where many folks thought he should have been DROY that he wouldn't drop so far so fast.

I don't question his heart, I don't question his physical ability... I do question if he gets it between the ears.. I guess, that's kinda what your saying.

so if Ryan can do or say something that turns the light on in his head... that's terrific... one can only hope..... How's B doing today?

I can't agree with that, Woody (Woody......that's better. ).

By this point in his career, his natural abilities as a rusher should be well-refined. Instead, he's been exposed and neutralized.

Now what you're saying is accurate in terms of pass coverage and play in open space, but he wasn't brought here to do that. His primary value to the position, why he was taken so highly, lies in his ability to pressure the passer and create disruption in the backfield. To that end, he's been a failure.

Wimbley has only one rush move, which is the speed-rush to the outside. I've focused quite a bit on him over the last two years, and his spin-move isn't there. His bullrush is non-existent. There's no rip's, no up and under's....nothing.

Natural rushers have it down pat by their 3rd seasons. Wimbley is going backwards in terms of development along his expected curve. It's too bad for us, but rushers have natural abilities that only need to be enhanced. Wimbley is lacking in that area.

I believe he can marginally improve him and maybe that helps out but Wimbley will never be an elite pass rusher or LB, IMO. Also, Phil made a bad move to trade one spot up for Wimbley when we could have had Haloti Nata. (sp)

Looking back doesn't help anything.

Bottom line is Wimp is a failed experiment at backer.

The sooner we can move on without him, the sooner we will be one step closer.

just a general reply

Ryan can make a huge difference in the career of Wimbley. Mangini will make a huge difference. Why hasnt Wimbley improved versus the run? You improve by practice and the Browns just didnt tackle in practice. Mangini will make a big difference due to the physical nature of his practice sessions.

One thing the Ryan family has been famous for is improving the pass rush skills of players. I see no reason why Wimbley cant improve. Now if he doesnt improve this year then there truly is no hope.

One area i did see major improvement last year was his ability to drop into coverage. He really looked pretty good at times in that area.

I think best case scenario for Kam is he develops into a decent pass rusher and can find a home on a 4-3 team. I don't see it, he has one move, and hes all finesse.

I don't buy into the fact that you can coach toughness and attitude. And Kam is not victim of "double teams" and "chipping". If anyone watched 2008 at all, teams cared nothing about Kam and let tackles run him over. If anything, Alex Hall got more attention than Kam.

What is Kam's contract numbers? From what I remember, he ain't making that much so cutting him would be dumb at this point. Anyone know his cap number, or what kinda hit we'd take if he was cut?

You're the same one bitchin' we have TEN openings in the starting rotation...Or does Wimb's make it 10???...And now u wanna make it ELEVEN???...YOUR 11 at least...

Don't worry about the Cap...He had a nearly 7M Option Bonus in year 2...And has another Bonus coming...Ready for this one???...It's 8.5M...Freakin' yet???

Don't worry cause it won't happen...It's from 3 Pro Bowls in his first 5 years...Obviously impossible now...

Solid LOW Base salaries...Like 585K in 09...And 1M in 2010...This dude goes NOWHERE but Cleveland if we're SMART...

Well I count Wimbleys spot as a need. But I also maintain that with a 585K cap number, you might as well keep him as a backup.

From reading tidbits from Ryan, the Browns must feel they can work with Kam. Therefore I would say the Browns would say they only need one OLB.

And...we are down to NINE starters needed, since we signed Barton, which was a very good move!

Kamerion Wimbley has had a couple things working against him in his tenure as a Brown.

1. He's had a poor position coach. What was his name, John Halachuk(sp). I don't know for sure if Halachuk had previous experiance in converting DE's to OLB's in the NFL.

2. Kamerion Wimbley knew no matter how he produced or lack of between the sidelines, he was never in danger of losing his starting LB spot.
I doubt under Crennel/Savage,Wimbley was ever pushed to be a elite playmaker.
Wimbley, knowing his job was secure never had that hunger and drive that separates the average and great.
Kamerion Wimbley is just a example of Browns players under Savage/Crennel that lackluster play equaled job security.

What Wimbley needs to decide is what kind of player he wants to be....a wolf or a sheep.
Wimbley needs to develop that edge and play with all out reckless abandon.
He doesn't always play at top speed.
I seen him many times take that patented straight route to the QB and get nullified by a RB on a pickup that Wimbley should be steamrolling.
Ray Rice of the Ravens made a afternoon just denying Wimbley his path to the QB. Rice got his hands up into Wimbley's chest,,end of story.

With all that said,Wimbley is still young and has been injury free. I think we can see a new improved Wimbley.
Mangini and Ryan will present the challenge to Wimbley to be that force in the mold of a James Harrison and Terrell Suggs.

Wimbley will be just as good as his rookie year in 2009. Mark my words. His sack total will be 10+.
