Linebacker David Bowens leaning towards Browns over New York Jets
by Dave Hutchinson nj.com
Saturday March 07, 2009, 5:51 PM

Barring an 11th-hour change of heart, linebacker David Bowens is expected to sign with the Cleveland Browns in the coming days, according to a person with knowledge of Bowens' thinking. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to speak for Bowens.

As first reported in The Star Ledger last week, the Jets, who released Bowens last month in a move that wiped his $2 million base salary off the books, are interested in re-signing him at a lower salary.

But Bowens, a 10-year veteran, is said to ``love'' playing for Eric Mangini and will likely select the Browns over the Jets. He visited the Browns this week.

Bowens, who spent two seasons with the Jets, was a valuable backup and special teams ace. Last season, he stepped in for an injured David Harris and did an outstanding job. He finished with 40 tackles, four sacks and an interception in 16 games, five starts.

Meanwhile, don't get too excited about USC quarterback Mark Sanchez working out for the Jets. He expected to be a top-10 pick, if not top-5, and the Jets are sitting at 17. If the Jets go quarterback in the first round, it'll likely be Josh Freeman (Kansas St.).

My thinking, however, is that they go wide receiver, especially with the departure of Laveranues Coles. Jeremy Maclin (Missouri), Hakeem Nicks (North Carolina) and Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland) are on the Jets' radar and don't be surprised if they traded up to get their man.

Amazing how the media Print as well as TV (NFL Network) portray Mangini as this Nazi figure or a Stoic Belicheck Wanabee...and yet time after time we get to read how one of his "EX" players "LOVE PLAYING" for him.

Just amazing!

Well, I've seen one guy say he loves playing for him........and so far all he is is a Belichick wannabe. Maybe in the future there will be Mangini wannabees.

All we can do is hope.

More than "ONE" CO55... Just off the top of my head without digging is Leon Washington and Kris Jenkins - Mangini is a lot different than Belicheck and is/has developed his own persona. What it isn't is a MEDIA DARLING and they think they can dupe everyone.

You can probably add CJ Mosely to that list, because if he didn't like playing for Mangini I doubt he would would come to the Browns with him as our coach.

didn't see this posted- according to MaryKay

Denver Broncos free agent cornerback Karl Paymah will visit the Browns on Monday, a source said.

Paymah, a fifth-year pro, would likely be a reserve corner and key special teams player for the Browns.

Paymah (6-0, 195) reportedly visited the Ravens on Thursday and will visit Tampa Bay on Sunday. He is also expected to visit the Vikings.

Paymah started two games in place of Champ Bailey last season, but struggled and was replaced by rookie Josh Bell. He's started five games in his four seasons with the Broncos. Paymah finished last season with 25 tackles, one fumble recovery, one interception and five passes defensed.

He was originally a third-round pick of the Broncos out of Washington State in 2005.

I guarantee the money we are both offering is comparable, considering were aren't overpaying for other FAs, but yeah just go ahead and assume they are only coming here for the money and it has nothing to do with the coach.

Got to get our # 5 Corner from somewhere.

JMHO...Mosely is a young DE and its the type of position in the 3-4 that average can become great if they are disciplined and goal driven. Obviously he respects Mangini considering he's trying to convince others to come here as well!

CLEVELAND -- The Browns have a visit scheduled later in the week with Green Bay free agent cornerback Jarrett Bush, a source said.

Bush, 24, has drawn interest from Tennessee and Baltimore because of his strong reputation on special teams. He was second on the Packers last year with 17 special teams tackles. He has limited appearances on defense in his three seasons in Green Bay.

Bush, 6-0 and 200 pounds, is a restricted free agent, but was undrafted out of Utah State and would not require compensation to Green Bay if he signs elsewhere.

The Browns have visited with three previous cornerbacks in free agency. They signed Hank Poteat of the Jets on Monday.

Roy Williams would be fine by me, If we ran a 4-3 I would be Cautious, but in run support and putting fear into receivers over the middle I say yes. Palamalu isn't the greatest in Coverage, but he has a pass rush and is part of a pass rush that doesn't allow QB's time to get downfield. My question is where is he health wise, and what type of doe is he looking for.

Roy Williams has no business being on any team that runs a 3-4.

Browns to Visit with OL
by Adam Caplan of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, March 11, 2009 at 1:51pm ET

Free agent OL Adam Goldberg is visiting the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, Scout.com has confirmed. It's believed Goldberg was the only NFL player to start four different positions (RT, LT, RG, LG) last season.

The versatile lineman was originally signed out of the University of Wyoming as an undrafted free agent in 2003 by the Minnesota Vikings.

Goldberg has played the past three seasons with the St. Louis Rams and they remain interested in re-signing him.

Cleveland Browns visit with another offensive lineman
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Sunday March 15, 2009, 10:47 PM
CLEVELAND -- John St. Clair, a 10-year veteran offensive lineman with three NFL teams, will visit the Browns on Monday, a source said.

St. Clair, 31, started 16 games at left tackle for the Chicago Bears in 2008. They wanted to bring him back as a backup and offered him $4 million over three years last month. St. Clair publicly has said he wants to stay with the Bears but he has not acted on the team's offer.

St. Clair, who is 6-5 and 315 pounds, has 55 starts in 107 career games with the Bears, Dolphins and Saints. He has also started at right tackle and guard.

The Browns on Friday signed Seattle free agent lineman Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack. They also released right tackle Kevin Shaffer.

I think that he probably falls into the "servicable' category at this point in his career.

IIRC, he played on 1 of the Rams Super Bowl teams.

St. Clair is an acceptable plan B to Tucker getting injured. Its a bandaid, but much cheaper then what Shaffer was getting. Even at 3 years and 4 million. The thing that makes me wonder is Tait of the bears retired. He was the right tackle. So how come the bears aren't signing this guy?

Yes, Tait has been placed on the Retired list.

St. Claire was a horrid dissapointment for most of his career. His career path was identical to that of LJ Shelton. Where he went, he failed. Over the last couple of years, he's played better. He's the kind of guy you sign to be a high-quality backup with the idea that if he's starting, he'll get you through the year but he's not part of the future. He's a real borderline kinda guy, very much like Andra Davis right now.

Sounds more like he is taking a visit to us to light a fire under Chicago's butt for a higher offer. I think he is leveraging and not really looking for an opportunity with us. If Chicago snubs him, we may have a shot.

Glad to see Mangini looking so much at the OL though, even if it is just depth guys. The injuries on the OL, between guys going inactive and the walking wounded last year, I think was our biggest problem.

He's a stop gap type player. He's started at RT for a season for each the Rams and the Fins when they were bad teams but was replaced the following years.

Diam, you realize that almost every single player lately is a BUM according to you? The NFL is apparently full of BUMs judging by your posts. Not really sure why you've such a negative outlook on them.

Not saying they are the greatest players, but I'm sure at least ~SOME~ of them have to be at least serviceable or they wouldn't be in the league for very long.

No .. not every single player ... just the BUMS ... ...

Shaff = BUM
S. Jones = NOT A BUM ..
Royal = NOT A BUM ..
Pork Chop = BUM
A. Davis = BUM ...
K. Winlsow = A-Hole .. NOT A BUM ...
Poteat = its an insult to BUMS calling him a BUM ...
Cousins = See Poteat ...
Barton = NOT A BUM ..

sorry man ... some guys in this league are BUMS .. there still better than anyone else at doing it or they would not be in the league .. but if they play YOUR IN TROUBLE ... if they are a LIABILITY and HURT U then they are BUMS IN MY BOOK ... see Shaff and Dra .. they did more harm than good ... BUMS ..

ST. Clair ironically enough is the guy the Lambs let Tuck go for .. and HE STUNK ... he was the guy that beat like a rented mule by the Pats in there SB game .. he KILLED THEM ...

I did not call Barton and Bowens BUMS cause they bring sumptin to the table ... (although Bowens only helps us casue of our pee poor pash rush or he'd be BUM ALSO ... matter of fact he very well could end up a BUM ... ) ..

not everyone is a BUM ... this season we just happen to be RELEASING and SIGNING a majority of BUMS ... not my fault ... just pinting out the FACTS ...

I'm not a fan of St. Clair from what I remember of the Rams days when they were worth following.

I remember he filled in for Pace and was just getting destroyed.

I don't know if he improved in Chicago or what but I think it's another one of those "golf clap depth signings."

Gotta admit, I think Diam speaks truth here with the exception of Womack who is a solid utility O-Lineman.

I understand the new FO is looking to build some depth but some of the mooks they've brought iin are pretty questionable....

Thus far, the moves they've made are grading out at a pass...but not by much.

I'll be interested to see what they get on draft day for Braylon before throwing my unwavering blind support to them.

Womack has ahistory of eating himself to the bench.Last year he stayed in shape and remained healthy.Maybe he had a life changing epiphany,or maybe it was his contract year,IDK.
We'll know come training camp.If he's in shape=decent enough backup.If he's not,then he's just another overwieght overpaid Brown's player.

I'm assuming we signed him to a relatively cheap deal...what were his terms? have they been released? (i haven't seen anything other than we signed him)

How about an 8-3 start? If that still gets your "unwavering blind suppot" than you are better than the Jets fans last year

The point is, the support will be there if they win,....I haven't seen a move yet that says they will. So the support remains the same---the anguish, disappointed kind.

If we get off to an 8-3 start, he probably still won't have my support -- because I'll have died from shock.

Wait a minute...Freeze the presses...

WTF is that???

You're labeling Bowens a "NOT BUM" because our Pass Rush sux...But if our Pass Rush was GOOD he'd be a "BUM"...

What the hell kinda logic is that???...(Even tho I know what u mean...lol)

It's Diam's Theory of BUM Relativity... duh.

The closer our team is to respectable (not much of a worry right now) the more likely the average player is to be a BUM.
With as far from respectable as we are, however, only the REALLY bad players (the ones that shoulda stuck with playing Pro Dodgeball) can be labelled as BUM's.
