Bills cutting Dockery, Royal
By John Clayton

Archive Offensive guard Derrick Dockery, who was signed to a seven-year, $49 million deal two years ago by the Buffalo Bills, was informed Thursday he is being released.

Veteran tight end Robert Royal, who had two years left on his contract, also will be released, according to his agent, Rick Smith.

Dockery was one of the key prizes in the free-agent class of 2007. His agent, Todd France, was able to get him a Steve Hutchinson-type package to leave the Washington Redskins for Buffalo. His seven-year, $49 million deal was the highest salary for a guard at the time.

During the first two years of the contract, Dockery was guaranteed $18.5 million. A change in offensive line coaches may have affected his status. His agent, Todd France, told The Associated Press that Dockery was being cut because the Bills wanted to go "in another direction."

Dockery, who will go on the waiver wire at 4 p.m. ET, could go to the top of the list of guards in free agency.

The 28-year-old Dockery, who played in college at Texas, entered the league as the third-round pick with the Redskins and has 77 career starts.

Man, how lucky can a guy get?

He wasn't an elite guard, yet received elite money. Then, just two years later, while he's still in the early prime of his career, he's cut and will land another elite contract while STILL not being a elite guard.

Is he a solid player? Yes. Is he going to be worth what a team is going to pay him? Unlikely.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

People can yell "get him" all they want. But I think you're spot on Toad. We'd have to pay elite money for an "above average G". I don't see that as such a wise avenue to follow IMO

I'd love to have him on that right side.........If the price is right.

But it won't be NEAR "right".

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

2 years ago I thought that was the worst deal made in Football.

2 years later I still do.

I agree.

And we got Steinbach for pretty much the same money. Not a bad deal.

7 million for offfensive line? as Colin Cowherd would say, ( and I hate to give that guy any credit), It doesn't pass the " say it out loud" test.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Someone will pay to land Dockery. I don't see it being us even though we can use him on the line and it would give us some depth.
