Chappelle has said that he struggled often with this...along the lines of using the n-word in a sketch, and then seeing a bunch of people laughing at it for reasons he thought weren't intended (i.e. simply laughing because the word was used). He began to struggle with his identity and his comedy -- was he perpetuating stereotypes or just making harmless jokes? And that varies depending on who is laughing and why.

A lot of people call it a double-standard, but, yes, it does matter who says it and in what context.

I think this is why I stayed out of the thread until it had reached 3 pages. Many's the time I popped into a thread with a title such as this, and wish I hadn't. I've seen some rather unflattering posts from Dawgs I like and respect. It's hard to experience.

This one was a very pleasant surprise for me. I'd like to weigh in with my personal P.O.V. but I'm pressed for time right now. Be Back soon... if y'all can stand it...

I got an argument at a bar we started to yell at each other, to provoke me he dropped the “N” bomb, like I said it just an extra stab while your down… No big deal... All heat of passion, stuff is just provoking me…

I remember one time I was in school, I go to Franklin, and this guy referred to black people as “colored” and then smirked/laughed as he said it..I think it was totally malicious and of course he pleaded ignorance.. We had a big class discussion which made it better..

People won’t say this stuff in public but they will say it in private in their homes with their friends, is that right? Not really but it is what it is.

No Problem, I wear my 44( turn 45 in March) well!!

that kind of confuses me ... your saying that the term AA was created by AA's to describe there skin color but that the "older" generation is not really down with it?? ... hmmm .. interesting ... any thoughts as to why that might be??? ...

and how does that generation feel about the term "black" ....

And the term AA is more used to describe heritage, not a skin color description. But since I grew up in the with folks saying " black and proud", of course black does not bother me. But I understand the switch to AA because it describes more of the cultural/heritage aspect. BUT just like with others, it still has the American part of it. So when I go to other countries, they can see I have African blood but when I talk, they hear the American!

So the term colored started to be used in the vicinity of the civil war and the "legal" end of slavery .... huh ..... I figured it to be much much later than that .... I thought maybe it became "fashionable" around maybe the 1950's when things were first starting to actually change for the better ...

i thought it may have replaced the word "..." and that was why it offended many folks .. but it sounds like it was used as a very deragotory word in conjuction with the "n" word ...

OK .. Thanks .... now I've met my minumum learning requirments for the day ... ...

do folks in other generations especially the older folks that were around in the 40's and 50's have the same disdain for the word "colored" as say folks born in the 60's .... and then how about folks born in the 60's compared to your generation (I'm ASSuming U were born in the mid 80's or so) ....

I was born in 82,

I am not sure how older folks feel but I can only assume that they don’t like it, I think they probably get more upset just because it was socially accepted in that time frame, but who knows. I don’t think any black person wants to be called “colored.”

I think everyone in my generation doesn’t care about getting called black, its not that big of deal for us. I can see how the older folks take pride in being called African- Americans because they were never given that chance. Think of it this way.. lets say you grew up poor, and you only went to McDonalds for special occasions, now you have money and your kids go to McDonalds all the time. Your kids won’t know or understand the significance of going to McDonalds because of the way you were raised but they only know what McDonalds means to them because how they were raised. With that point no one knows how much going to McDonalds means to you…. That’s just my take on it.

and jules its to much work to type lol..I come here to learn from all of you great browns people.. so when i argue football at the water cooler i know what i am talkinga bout.

Damn! From the mouths of babes.. (just messin' witcha, Lurker). Your guess about older folks' view of the word "colored" was on point; my folks would fight U about using either term. I, in turn, hated hearing it as well (still do).

It doesn't matter what label you put on yourself or others put on you... at the end of the day any man, woman or child is who he or she sees in the mirror. We are all human beings. Govenments, Borders, Race nor Religion can change that fact...

Just wondering how the black posters on the board felt about a few things ... and the reason I ask is not so much to find out your opinions but to see why U feel the way U do ... so if u could please explain yourself that would be helpful to me ... also if u wanna talk about how some of your friends feel and why that'd be great ...

if u don't want to reply for any number of different reasons .... I understand .... also if u don't want to reply in here please PM me .... i will not share it with anyone else ... just trying to get some insight from a different perspective than mine .....

1. the cartoon about the cops shooting the chimp ....

2. Sharpton as a focal point in many issues for blacks ....

for those that respond .. thanks ... appreciatte it ...

I do have a take on the picture with the chimp...

The stimulus bill was written by the Dems in Congress, not Obama. The thing is the cartoonist has a reputation of drawing negative stereotypes. Knowing that I believe the purpose was to insinuate something. He can cover his rear but if you dig a little deeper you can assume what is intent was.

I don't think it was racists on it's face but rather in bad taste.

Whether or not he intended to come across as rascist is to me beside the point . What editor lets this cartoon get by him in the first place ? I hate the PC culture that we live in but even I think that was a dumb move by the artist and the paper.

My thing is that I have seen many political satire cartoons depicting Bush as a chimp and nothing was ever said about it.

I dont think the guys intent had anything to do with race, it was a reference to intelligence, just the same as it was when it was Bush depicted as a chimp.

I also agree with Pdawg that he wasnt even referring to Obama, he was referring to the chimps who WROTE the bill.

Again, this guy has a rep of stereotyping. I think that should affect (or is it effect) what people read into it.

I agree there will be a double standard for Obama. That is because comparing monkeys to blacks is something that has been done for a very long time as a very negative stereotype. Even if the intent of a cartoonist isn't racists, it does show bad taste.

After I read your post and figured out what and the hell you were talking about, I decided to speak without being spoken to...Again.

I understand what you were trying to achieve, but someone was going to speak up, so why shouldn't it be me? I just wanted to give a little background on that cartoon so people would know the context.

If you want to know how I raise my kids, come on down. I'll take my belt off and whack you on the backside like I do them when they act like smart asses.

Dang.

There's a reason I didn't wrestle in h.s. The biggest reason is, when I went to the matches, all the guys that weighed what I did, were big freaking guys. (I was 6' 2", 185 to 190). Most of the guys in that weight class were 5' 10" or so, and seemed to be built like the proverbial brick outhouses. I'd have gotten hurt! )

I did my damage in basketball and football. (ever see someone cut their thumbnails to a point? Like this: ^ So they were almost razor like? Well, knife like, anyway. )

Oh damn, I played DE/OLB and I always hated the O linemen who had long or jagged nails, it always seemed like when I would take the outside rush their last grasp as I went by was to reach out for my collar and many times would end up raking their nails across the side of my neck or collar bone area.
