I've just now read this topic, because for the most part I couldn't care less what people call themselves. However, this is a comment I'd like to touch on: Quote:
I think its funny how you are blaming minorties
All types of people are guilty of racism or hatred towards those different from themselves. If you absolve whatever group you happen to be a part of from the equation and from any guilt in the matter, then you aren't being honest with yourself, and will most likely continue to be part of the problem. Just because you aren't part a majority group does not make your particular group innocent. I don't mean you in particular, I'm just sayin'.....

This is what Journey Dawg posted “ The minorities that are thin skinned and whiney are why there will always be a race war.” So in his eyes the Racist people who teach, and breed hate, who take joy in disrespecting and oppressing people are ok but its the thin skinned minorities fault lol. (i'm just going by what he typed lol)
You are correct there are racist people on all sides, I will never deny that, because I have seen it from many ways.
My question for you,.. Why did you take that comment and not all the other questionable comments from other people? I mean I commented on a ignorant statement that Journey made but you want to question me.. explain because it makes absolutely no sense to me.

Because I was addressing someone who appeared to be attempting to be reasonable. I often just ignore those who are not. My thought was that you could address those comments without trying to place all the blame on one party, which is what stops progress, IMO. That's all, nothing sinister behind my motives.

CoachB, Glad to see you are posting again. You asked a legit question and it deserves a legit answer! The reason AA is used is because that label, just like Italian, Greek, Polish, Chinese, ..etc - American, is used because in all of the years of being in America, that is the first time WE defined ourselves! Think about it, someone else was defining who we were from the time AA arrived. And the most opposition to that term is from people who are pissed that they cannot define us as they see fit!!
Next - every group in the US can trace their heritage back to a country. That is why you see a hyphen used or even if they just say they are American, they will say they are of "European or more specifically a country descent". Hell, look how big China is, Chinese people just some it up as the whole country, not down to Mandarin..etc. Well, since AAs cannot point to a specific country, we use the whole continent( even though are descendants are usually from Ghana, Nigeria,..the western coast).
Now does that mean I use AA all the time, nope. IF we were talking on a street and I was describing a person, I would use the shorter "black or white" to describe them. But if you asked me specifically to describe me, I would use AA, just like the author of the original article uses just black/brown.

i think the point is that is long as we keep defining ourselves in this manner (with hyphens) then we are dividing ourselves up into little groups....when really what we should be is one big group.....Americans
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

But I will tell you its offensive being called “colored”
Why? Genuine curiosity really. Is it because of the time frame in which that term was used? Does it have some meaning other than "a different color than me"? I'm just curious why black is cool, African-American is cool, but colored is offensive when, in my own opinion, they all have the same meaning... do they not all have the same meaning?

I would say it’s the time frame, and what the word meant back then.. In those times it was socially acceptable to be racist and the word “colored” was used often to describe black people.
To me it’s deeming and it feels that people use it to try and hold something above you...like back in the day when it was accepted, and if you were called that you had to take it.. and now its not accepted so if they can use it and get away with it they think they have something over me…. Does that make sense?
I have been called colored a few times by older people who were in their 40s- 50s

So, what you're saying is that it is used more to describe heritage in a conversation and not used as a "label" to differentiate yourself from other "Amdreicans"....is that what you're saying? If so, that makes sense to me.
I think some people are misunderstanding the intent and/or lumping everyone that uses the term into one category. Like everything else, people have different motivations for their actions.
Thanks for the response. I have always wondered why the term was used. I have also always had the opinion that such terms divided us and was indeed a seperatist term. However, your reply does make sense to me and shows me that not everyone uses that term for that reason.
I honestly believe that if we would all ask the type of question I did and actually listen to those that are asked, we will go a long way to at least understanding each other and in so doing, further the goal of dissipating racial issues (though I'm not sure they will ever be gone because, let's face it, we will always have ignorance from every race).

What time frame did the term colored become "fashionable" .. what word(s) did it replace and what word(s) followed it ..... and what did it "mean" when it became fashionable ...
and any chance U could let us know what it meant to other generations of Americans with the same general skin tone as U ...
just curious ... as amazing as it may seem .. i love history and actually love to learn ... so am just wondering what your perspective in on these talking points ...

No problem. And like you said, if we do not ask questions, we will never learn. In other parts of the world, they use parental culture/country all the time when speaking to someone not from their country.

It was used in the 1850s well into the 1950s, just google and there is information that will come up.

Most black Americans are of mixed-race heritage, which manifests itself in different ways in our external appearance. Some of us are light enough that we look white;
Hehe..I resemble that remark somewhat..been called HIGH YELLOW..blah blah..and thats by people I consider lighter than me..

So the term colored started to be used in the vicinity of the civil war and the "legal" end of slavery .... huh ..... I figured it to be much much later than that .... I thought maybe it became "fashionable" around maybe the 1950's when things were first starting to actually change for the better ... i thought it may have replaced the word "..." and that was why it offended many folks .. but it sounds like it was used as a very deragotory word in conjuction with the "n" word ... OK .. Thanks .... now I've met my minumum learning requirments for the day ... ... do folks in other generations especially the older folks that were around in the 40's and 50's have the same disdain for the word "colored" as say folks born in the 60's .... and then how about folks born in the 60's compared to your generation (I'm ASSuming U were born in the mid 80's or so) ....

He's right..the word "Colored" was used in a deogratory way and often associated with slavery..blacks were thought of as second rate and not on the same scale as whites.
The more acceptable term today for people not of European decent is :"People of color"....

I was born in 82,
I am not sure how older folks feel but I can only assume that they don’t like it, I think they probably get more upset just because it was socially accepted in that time frame, but who knows. I don’t think any black person wants to be called “colored.”
I think everyone in my generation doesn’t care about getting called black, its not that big of deal for us. I can see how the older folks take pride in being called African- Americans because they were never given that chance. Think of it this way.. lets say you grew up poor, and you only went to McDonalds for special occasions, now you have money and your kids go to McDonalds all the time. Your kids won’t know or understand the significance of going to McDonalds because of the way you were raised but they only know what McDonalds means to them because how they were raised. With that point no one knows how much going to McDonalds means to you…. That’s just my take on it.
and jules its to much work to type lol..I come here to learn from all of you great browns people.. so when i argue football at the water cooler i know what i am talkinga bout.

Lurker, You are a baby but atleast one that was taught about some history! Also your instincts about the term colored were on point. Older AAs, especially from the age 55+ HATE that term. It was just another term put on them. AA is a term/description that AA created.

Why is it I never heard the term African-Canadian, or African-Mexican
Because Canada and Mexico didn't enslave like we did.
Thanks for giving me a jumping-off point, GM.
Why do we say "African American" instead of "Black" or "..." or "negro"??
The answer lies in perception of the word(s).
Each time we try to get a little less derogitory, the term has to become softer and more acceptable. As a result, "African-American" sounds less derogitory than "Black" which was less derogitory than "...."
Ultimately, it'd be nice if we could find a way to use a term that adequately convey's without any negative connotation, but that day isn't here yet. Only time can heal/fix this thing.
As for the author, ok, I get it. It's good to want to create your own identity and not be labeled as something your not.
Regarding racism, there will always be pockets of backwards people that hold onto the belief that black people are less than whites, just as there will always be pockets of backwards people that believe the white people are still trying to keep the black man down. The reality is that what our ancestors did was horrific beyond description, but each individual person is responsible for their own life in today's world. It may be harder for someone from the inner-city to work their way out than it would be for a suburbian rich-kid, but life isn't fair. If you want to be better, you have to take control of your situation and stop blaming others.
I can sit here in all honesty and say I'm not racist. I can say without hesitation that I have no friends who are racist. I can say with pure conviction that there are some white people I've met who I wouldn't let handle my garbage, just as I can say there are black people I've met who I wouldn't trust as far as I can throw'em. Each person can be judged based on their own actions, and for the most part in today's world, people of all color get at least some piece of the benefit of the doubt.
Hell, how many of you think all the Somalian people you now see in the Airports are pirates?
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

I agree 100% with your take .. its the LOGICAL take and it makes PERFECT SENSE ... that is why i keep asking about your generation and a few other generations ... because IMO peoples experiences in life combined together are what has formed there opinions on how they think and feel about things today ...
put in perspective with this convo ... a black person (I'll use "black" cause U said it does not offend U) ... born in say 1940 had an entirely different set of "words" to describe there color .... lets say the "n" word and "colored" were the two terms used back then that were very deragatory ... so now someone born in the 60's when PC was in its infant stages were called the "n" word but not as much and other "softer" words were used to define there color .... then someone in your generation has an entirely different set of words that were even softer than previous generations to define your color ..
so i was just wondering how the different words transended the generations ... and if there were any differences in how black people interperted those words .... if I'm understanding this correctly ... and please correct me If I am wrong ....
... according to u the 'N" word and "colored" are unnaceptable and "anger" any generation ...
the African - American definition of your color is not accepted very well by folks of your generation but the folks from the 60's and 40's are "good" with it ...
and the word "black" is accepted by your generation and your not sure how the previous generations feel about the description of your color ...
am I wrong in my conclusions from your point of view?? ..

U seem like a pretty smart young man .. don't get in the habit of ASSuming .. its a bad habit ...
Quote:

makes sense .. as I previously stated .. i never had any clue that word was percieved as being so deragatory ... I've done a lot of reading on slavery and the civil war and the period after ... but reading words in a book U can't determine how a word is percieved or "accepted" .... it is also not like living it ... and to truely understand sumptin IMO U need to live it ....

and thats the progression as I ASSumed it might be ... the older folks were used to the "n" word and colored so AA was an "upgrade" if U will ... will be interesting to see what Dog has to say on this front and what generation he's from ..
Thanks for taking the time to explain things ... appreciatte it ... and jules is right .. U oughta post more .. you seem like a bright young man ..

that kind of confuses me ... your saying that the term AA was created by AA's to describe there skin color but that the "older" generation is not really down with it?? ... hmmm .. interesting ... any thoughts as to why that might be??? ...
and how does that generation feel about the term "black" ....

Just a serious question that I wondered about. If the term "colored" is offensive, why does the NAACP use it? Thoughts?

Tradition, I would guess. A different time, when 'colored' was itself a 'softer' word.
But interestingly enough, when they were founded they went with another acronym...IIRC it had the word 'negro' in it, and they decided to go with the (then) 'softer' 'colored'.

I just always thought U were a dumb ass ... never knew u were a "black" dumb ass ... Well that makes two of us because I've always felt you're a stupid-a$$,... what generation are U from??? .. and how do U feel about the "AA" description of your color ... and the word "black" as a description of your skin color??? I'm 49...I don't have a problem with African-American, because I know we have decended from there..from some destant relative....Afro-Amercian went out when fro's went out as the hair style However I also have Indian/Irish in my family..I'm not as caught up in the terms themselves.. I'm ASSuming your reply was to the use of the word "colored" ... U always ASSume sumptin don't U? Yes..I was using that word. Using the term "Colored" is a red flag...it's not accepted..it was thrusted upon blacks and used in a demeaning way to distinguish us from whites.. And it's not a good thing to hear another black person use that word either.. I know some still use it as I've heard it myself..and others have commented that the person who used it was ignorant..must not have known better.. Many comedians took a lot of heat for using the "N" word and "colored". The term "black" isn't really offensive to me.I know my skin isn't really black but a brownish orange hue...I'm a artist so I describe colors different than most.. It's a shortened word to use in a general sense but most blacks know their skin isn't really that color.Just like those from Euro decent know their skin isn't white.. Most aren't offended by it...saying African-American every time isn't going to come out of our mouths all the time.

Reminds me of some beautiful team colors. What team would that be? It's hard to describe my skin..in winter it gets pale..as it was when I was a kid..in summer I tan very easily so it becomes more brownish.. Thats the hue my mom had..and she had a lot of Cherokee in her...thats the side the Indian decesent in on. U should see my youngest son..he is so pale..the older one is more brown..he got a tan and it hasn't faded.

I am 26, it turn 27 next week The younger generations 80s 90s have really no clue about the struggles that the older generations really had to go through, so we don’t mind being called black. Its not that we don’t like the term AA, it just won’t offend us calling us black, it doesn’t matter which one you use. The “N” bomb will always upset black people, it doesn’t matter, the ignorant people will want to fight, the intelligent people will try and talk it out and there are people like me who are caught in the middle… I have been called that a few times so its no biggie to me. Is it worth going to jail for and risk my virgin A**hole?? lol no…. Is it worth arguing about? Depending on how it escalated.. I do Muay Thai Kickboxing so I would challenge the person to come to my gym and we can fight it out with boxing gloves But 7 out of 10 times the “N” bomb was dropped in the heat of passion just to be an A** .... I don’t think people are going to use it out of the blue. To me “colored” is ignorant and sometimes it can be overlooked for example, if an 80 year old woman said , “You like that new colored president?” .. Am going to get upset? Not really she is from a different time and she will not understand how that can offensive, so I its no point to fight the battle, that you can’t win.. but if their my age, I will correct them tell them that its offensive. If there was a tree I would say it would go like this ‘”N” bomb > Colored > Negro > Afro American > African American/Black

was that even any fun Yeah..cuze neither one of us got banned But as far as terms goes..I realize who and what I am..and I undersatnd that while some people use terms that are insulting and less than flattering..thats not how God views people..he's not partial..and I wasn't raised to be partial or predjudiced toward anyone. He made us different and thats the beauty in humans..well excluding U
