On this day in 1835, the first recorded attempt to assassinate a sitting U.S. President happened when an unemployed and, apparently, deranged house painter from England stepped out of a crowd with two flintlock pistols. President Andrew Jackson flinched helplessly as BOTH weapons misfired. According to legend, upon gathering his wits about himself, Jackson went after his assailant and started wailing on him with his cane as his aides struggled to restrain the President and remove him from the scene.

On a side note, one of the men who restrained and disarmed the would-be assassin was none other than David Crockett (who would later be immortalized for his role at the Battle of the Alamo).

Happy Friday everyone!

On this day in 1798 - The first brawl in the U.S. House of Representatives was witnessed by legislators. Congressmen Matthew Lyon and Roger Griswold duked it out right there on the House floor.

The spat occurred when Lyon spit in Griswold’s face.

On January 26th of 1962, the U.S. sent the Ranger 3 probe to the moon. The spacecraft missed the moon by several thousand miles and kept going.

Being a presidential history buff and having done my senior research report on secret service and protection of the president, I know this all too well.

The guns were loaded and in perfect working condition. The chances of BOTH guns misfiring was 1 in 785,000. Then again this was Andrew Jackson. The same man who in a duel years earlier was shot in the chest but remained stading and perfectly still so he could use his shot to kill his opponent. If he had been hit it probably would have just made him more angry.

I think I read elsewhere that, on that particular day, the humidity was abnormally high and that may have contributed to the weapons misfiring. Sounds kinda far-fetched to me. However, there's no doubt in my mind that, in addition to being tough as nails, he was one lucky SOB (particularly on THAT day). Very interesting guy, IMO.
