Know biggie but news non-the-less

Adviser to Browns owner leaves team

BEREA -- Bob Kain, who held the title 'vice chairman' and served as an advisor to Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner, has left the team.

Kain, the former CEO and president of IMG, had been with the NFL franchise since 2007. Kain was instrumental in Lerners 2006 purchase of soccer team Aston Villa in the English Premier League.

Kain's departure was confirmed by a Browns spokesman after the team introduced new general manager George Kokinis on Monday.

Since concluding a 4-12 season, the Browns have fired coach Romeo Crennel, GM Phil Savage and player personnel director T.J. McCreight. Last week, the Browns laid off 15 people from their support staff.

Still, wasn't this supposed to be one of Lerner's inner circle? Call me crazy, I'm coming at this from the angle that your inner circle is a close group of friends that act as a sounding board/ conscience, but I would be a little worried if a friend said he didn't want to be friends anymore. Especially after you just made an important business decision in the media ... dunno.

Maybe his friend has 40 mil in the bank and figures he needs to start spending some of it before it is worthless.

Sometimes people just call it quits and want to ride the gravy train a while.

I wouldn't read too much into this move.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

When it's broke all to hell, there's a lot of fixin' needs done.

For all you know, this may be the guy who advised him to sign Dainty Stallworthless. If so? Next Please!

Actually, he wasn't that vital and hasn't been around for "years." He was acting more as a friend helping Randy with the Aston Villa purchase, and once that settled down, he helped Randy with this transition. Really nothing more for him to do here.

EREA — Yet another Browns executive is leaving the organization.

Bob Kain, who was a key adviser to owner Randy Lerner the past 2½ years and held the title "vice chairman," said his work is done and he will no longer be a part of the Browns' hierarchy.

Kain, the former president and co-CEO of IMG, was mostly instrumental in the purchase by Lerner of the Aston Villa F.C. soccer team of the English Premier League and its business and marketing startup. Lerner then called on Kain's expertise to assist in retooling his Browns operation.

Kain assisted in Lerner's search of a front-office restructuring that resulted in the hiring of Eric Mangini as coach and George Kokinis as general manager. In that role, he spoke personally with potential candidates such as Bill Cowher and others who were not formal candidates, such as Brian Billick and Marty Schottenheimer.

Kain insisted his departure is not related to the persons selected for those offices, but rather that they have been now been filled.

"Randy and I both agree that I've done what I can do for both teams," Kain said. "I tried to mentor him, to some extent, tried to be a voice of reason and someone to listen to.

"It's been a wonderfully fun assignment to me and I think I've helped on the business and have been supportive to Randy. So I feel good about it and I feel it's the right time to move on."

Kain said he already is involved in another project more in step with his marketing background that will keep him on the road for several months.

He said he wishes the Browns well and hopes to watch them evolve into a championship team.

Since the Browns season ended, they have fired coach Romeo Crennel, General Manager Phil Savage and player personnel director T.J. McCreight, and laid off at least 15 people from their support staff.

Bob who? Don't have a clue about this fellow except he must be rich beyond anything I can imagine and he advised Randy. Best of luck, guy. Hope your consul is well founded and our new management team is going to take our team to the promised land.

"Still, wasn't this supposed to be one of Lerner's inner circle?"

Yeah he was like Donald Trumps' "GEORGE".

Just remember 2006 Lerner sold his business interests and planned to have a more direct interest in the goings on of the Browns. He mentored Randy into the Browns Organization and helped in the process of finding Mangini and Kokinis.

It wasn't a job that Kain needed. He feels comfortable with the New Regime in place and Randy with 2 years under his belt and 5 as the owner. No longer needs his services.

This might be a change that would allow Harris or some other true football guy to come aboard.
This guy seemed only to be a marketing person and advisor to Randy.

Kain never stood in the way of hiring football people.

A NFL team is a fairly big business, and there is way more to running it than playing a game every fall Sunday, and you need more than just football people on the payroll.

This guy did what he did to assist the owner in various business ventures and act as a sounding board....from a business standpoint.

His work here is done.

End of story.

Yeah, I guess. It makes sense if he was acting in more of the mentor role than close friend and confidant. I'll buy it ... for now

Did I miss something... where was it written that he and Lerner had any kind of falling out? Are you saying they aren't friends anymore?

Dude had other thiings to do... he wasn't needed on the payroll any longer.. that was probably the plan the day he walked in the door....

I find it amusing that many act surprised at this, as if they have any idea what the guy did. Since I doubt anybody on this site is a billionaire, I'm sure they have no idea what guys like this guy do for guys like Lerner. Their world is something people like us will never experience.

Lerner is a fairly young man who has an excessive amount of money. Just because you are rich, doesn't mean you know everything about every business. Rich people buy businesses all the time that they know little about, as far as running them that is. They are investments not jobs. Then they use the money they have to hire advisors help them understand how to run those businesses.

Look at it this way. Say you hit the mega millions lotto. Now you have $100 million dollars. You have to invest it somehow, so you buy, say a car dealership. First you would have to hire someone to show you how to buy a car dealership. Then once you own it, you better hire someone to help you run it, or at least advise you on how to run it.

It's a world most of us would never understand, reading anything into it is foolish. When people have money like Lerner has, guys like this are a dime a dozen.

Didn't know where else to put this...

Quote:

• IT'S MANGINIVILLE NOW, SCOTT. From Scott MacRaild, of Sagamore Hills, Ohio: "Thanks for your insight on the topics in the NFL. I bleed Brown and Orange and wanted to inquire if you feel the layoffs by the Browns front office has anything to do with the large salaries owed to Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel for years to come? Also, what other impact may this have as the Brownies move forward and prepare for 2009 and beyond?''

The layoffs were made, in part at least, to establish a one-voice organization by Eric Mangini, and to pave the way for new Mangini loyalists to enter the building. Randy Lerner is not making cutbacks because of the economy.

seems odd, Pit! Maybe it is a handoff of sorts. Lerner has to have had his brains advised out by now; some may be tired of the roll. By handoff, I am saying maybe he decided to get off the tracks with a new train in town to give it a best chance. Too arcane to bother with beyond 'So what?' and 'And . . . ?.' I hope it works out. Don't think this guy is abandoning him; we still gotta ice the deal on the field.
