Analysis: There's little time to wait as Mangini ponders off-season moves for Browns
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Tuesday January 13, 2009, 6:50 PM

Filling out a coaching staff is only the tip of the iceberg of tasks facing new Browns head coach Eric Mangini.

CLEVELAND -- One of the reasons Browns owner Randy Lerner acted swiftly on naming Eric Mangini head coach was to give Mangini a jump start on the tasks at hand. And there are many.

The NFL calendar is not put on hold while the league conducts its postseason tournament.

This is another example of how the league is rigged to help losing teams catch up to winning teams. While the organizations still involved in the playoffs are immersed in their next games, the also-rans are ramping up efforts to improve themselves.

A just-hired coach like Mangini also has to round up a coaching staff or else be stuck with leftovers.

So that's Mangini's first order on a crowded list of "things to do" over the next three months.

Complete his coaching staff: The main cogs appear to be in place -- offensive coordinator Brian Daboll (formerly Jets quarterbacks coach), defensive coordinator Rob Ryan (Raiders) and special teams coordinator Brad Seely (Patriots).

Daboll and Ryan probably would bring in suggestions for Mangini to fill out some of the position coaches.

As for retaining some coaches from the Romeo Crennel staff, Mangini didn't sound too positive about it at his introductory press conference. Some already have been notified they won't be retained.

Hire a general manager: In his interview with Lerner, Mangini strongly recommended George Kokinis, Baltimore pro personnel director, for the job. Lerner interviewed Kokinis on Sunday and a mutual positive feeling emerged.

A source confirmed that Kokinis will receive a second interview after some time next week after Baltimore plays Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game. That interview could be tantamount to a contract being negotiated.

If Kokinis accepts, it's possible the Ravens would give him permission to leave the team before the Super Bowl. Kokinis' scouting work for Baltimore on the two NFC finalists -- Philadelphia and Arizona -- essentially would be completed by then. It's also possible that Kokinis may opt to enjoy the Super Bowl experience with the Ravens, should they advance past Pittsburgh.

If Kokinis does not accept the job, Lerner has dropped the names of a few potential alternative candidates. But none has been formally interviewed.

Mangini also must make a decision on whether to keep Browns director of player personnel T.J. McCreight, who has interviewed for the GM job and is supervising the scouting staff during this transition period.

McCreight also could be a candidate for a personnel position with another team.

With Shaun Rogers (92) the lone real standout on the Browns defense in the 2008 season, Mangini and his staff will need to determine what positions are in the greatest need of personnel change during the off-season.

Evaluate the roster: This is a high priority that can't wait for Mangini to complete his entire staff. This must be done in order for Mangini and the Browns to proceed on their off-season scouting projects.

Mangini is somewhat familiar with the Browns' personnel because the Jets and Browns played three times (once in preseason) over the past three years. But he needs to get a better handle on what he's inheriting and he already has begun poring over video in his first full week on the job.

Ideally, the GM would participate in a full staff evaluation of the Browns' roster. In Kokinis' case, his job with Baltimore requires him to know every team's personnel, particularly within the division, so he conceivably knows more about the Browns than Mangini.

Devise an off-season strategy: Once Mangini (and the GM) knows the Browns' roster, they can prioritize the positions of greatest need. Then they can plan how to attempt to fill them in free agency, trade and the draft.

Under former GM Phil Savage, the Browns were aggressive in each of their four off-seasons. Savage made more trades than any other GM in that time and the Browns were not shy in spending big on free agents.

The Jets were aggressive in free agency only last season with Mangini, when the owner tried to buy the team into the playoffs.

Is Brady Quinn the QB for 2009? Mangini may not face as urgent a decision between Quinn and Derek Anderson as some may have believed.

KEY DATES
Jan. 11-17: East-West Shrine Game in Houston.
Jan. 18-24: Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Feb. 18-24: NFL combine in Indianapolis.
Feb. 19: Deadline for clubs to designate franchise and transition players.
Feb. 26: Deadline for submission of qualifying offers to restricted free agents (RFAs) whose contracts have expired and to whom clubs desire to retain right of first refusal/compensation. Also, it's the deadline to submit offers of minimum salary to retain exclusive rights to players with fewer than three years and whose contracts expired.
Feb. 27: Veteran free agency begins and trading period begins.
March 22-25: NFL annual meetings, Dana Point, Calif.
April 17: Signing period ends for RFAs.
April 24: Deadline for old club to exercise right of first refusal to RFAs.
April 25-26: NFL draft

Recoup extra draft picks: Savage's trades left the Browns without choices in the third round (for Martin Rucker), fifth (for Paul Hubbard) and seventh (for Travis Daniels).

If Mangini follows the example led by mentor Bill Belichick, he will seek to fortify his draft -- not only this season but in succeeding years.

In three years under Mangini, the Jets made trades acquiring 11 draft picks and losing 15 for a net loss of four. They gained one as compensation for losing a free agent and another for releasing former coach Herm Edwards to Kansas City.

Commit to a quarterback: This has been the franchise's greatest failing in the expansion era. Savage contributed by acquiring four starting quarterbacks in four seasons.

Crennel said Brady Quinn would be his quarterback in 2009, but the former coach won't have a voice in it. In his only comments about the position, Mangini indicated he is in no rush to decide on Quinn or Derek Anderson.

Mangini said of choosing his starting quarterback, "You have to be able to assess what they can do physically, you have to get to know what their huddle presence is like, how they are mentally, the decision-making process. And that's not something that you just do right away, not something that necessarily happens quickly. You go through a process and you make a decision when you feel it's right. You just know."

It has been commonly believed that the Browns have to make a decision on Anderson in March, when he is a due a $5 million roster bonus. But the terms of Anderson's 2008 contract extension make that payment guaranteed in the event Anderson were released prior to that date.

In other words, the Browns have to pay Anderson the $5 million if they release him or keep him. The only "out" is if they trade him before the due date. The new team would inherit that contract guarantee.

A possible compromise for a trade could be the Browns agreeing to share a portion of the roster bonus.

Whatever option they choose on Anderson, it's more probable now that it won't happen until April at the earliest.

Some interesting points to ponder. It sure is going to be a busy off-season. even more reason I'm glad we have the foundation laid now with our new regime. With all this stuff to figure out, I agree with Randy, the earlier the better. Meanwhile, Kansas City has it's Commander-in-Chief (pun intended) but hasn't even fired their old head coach yet.

thanks for posting Kardiac,.,

For once, Grossi made some decent points. He seems to be right about the "TO DO" List that Randy and Mangini have in front of them.

But the good news is, they seem to be chipping away at it each day. I think you will hear today that we can confirm out OC and DC.. It also appears by all reports that we have a new ST Coach as well (seely). That all should be announced today.

I think what you will find is that after those announcements, the rest of the coaching staff will be rounded out quickly. probably in the next week is my guess. (unless someone they want is coaching for a superbowl contender, then it will take a couple of weeks longer)

As for the other things like finding a GM,, That seems to be moving along but I'm not convinced that we can't get along with just TJ McCreat. It all depends on how Mangini and he get along.

Roster Evaluation: Mangini needs input from his OC and DC and thier respective staffs.... not that he's not capable, but thats a helluva big task for one man.. I'm sure it's already begun to some degree.

The off season stategy is the one that makes me scratch my head that Grossi would bring up. My guess is that during the interview, Mangini probably spoke out about how he would go about things this off season. So my guess is that a strategy is already in place and being massaged right now.

Lots of things going on and lots of stuff to prepare for as the article says..

Welcome to Cleveland Mr Ryan and Mr. Daboll.... now get to work!

This might be a trivial point, but Grossi is claiming Mangini has decisions to make that aren't his.....like McCreight. It will be the GM's decision on whether or not he is ratained, not Mangini's.

Exactlly....Now knowing that Cokes speciality is in pro personnel and TJ's is more in college scouting and they have both worked together before it wouldn't surprise me if TJ stayed on....

Oh yeah, if we bring in Kokinis at GM and T.J. doesn't stay on (he'll probably be promoted), Lerner would be an absolute fool. I think he's learned that lesson well enough though when we had to bring in Trip McCracken to handle cap for Savage... no reason to force a guy to wear hats that he's not comfortable wearing if you can bring in someone capable to do it for him or, in this case, keep someone on who can do it.

It seems as though it would lend to "some" degree of continuity.

McCreight wasn't the problem. Let the guy keep his job.

Plus, if we don't, who is going to head up the college draft for us? If you look at Kokinis' resume, aside from his scouting a decade ago, he barely has anything to do with the college scouting aspect of things (except that he's negotiated a few contracts). His background is almost entirely in pro personnel. Since McCreight is currently handling the scout staff anyway and processing business as usual, why mess with it?

Technically, I think you are correct on that... The thing I was thinking about is, if Mangini and TJ hit it off and can become the pair of guys that moves us forward, then there isn't a need for another GM.

Look at both guys background as they appear on thier team sites:

Quote:

T.J. McCreight
Director, Player Personnel
T.J. McCreight is in his fourth season with the Browns and was elevated to the position of Director, Player Personnel in 2007 after serving the previous two seasons as Assistant Director, Player Personnel.

McCreight’s duties with the team include assisting in pro scouting, advance scouting of upcoming opponents, unrestricted free agency and assisting the college scouting staff in preparation for the NFL Draft. McCreight also assists with contract negotiations with some draft selections.

McCreight spent the previous eight seasons (1997-2004) in the Baltimore Ravens personnel department, including his last two seasons with the Ravens’ as the club’s national scout. McCreight spent three seasons with Baltimore as the East area scout and was then assigned expanded coverage to scout players throughout the United States.

McCreight gained his football experience in the college ranks both as a player and a coach. He was a tight end at Liberty University (Lynchburg, Va.), where he played under former Browns head coach Sam Rutigliano. McCreight graduated in 1992 with a degree in marketing.

McCreight’s college coaching resume includes defensive line coach at Delaware State University from 1994-97 and receivers coach at Oberlin College in 1993. He and his wife, Linda, live with their son Matthew, 7, and daughter, Maggie, 5, in Bainbridge, Ohio.

Quote:

George Kokinis, in his 5th year as director of pro personnel and his 17th season as a member of the franchise, works closely with GM Ozzie Newsome in analyzing NFL rosters and coordinating and evaluating each year’s free agency market. Along with personnel recommendations, Kokinis assists vice president of football administration Pat Moriarty in negotiating contracts for some of the Ravens’ draft picks.

1996-2007: (with Baltimore) 2007: Ravens acquired Pro Bowl alternate RB Willis McGahee from the Bills in exchange for future draft choices...Team retained OLB Jarret Johnson, who re-signed with the team during the spring. 2006: Negotiated the contracts of draft picks S Dawan Landry (5th round) and DE Ryan LaCasse (7th round)...Ravens acquired QB Steve McNair in exchange for an ‘07 draft pick, re-signed OLB Bart Scott and also signed a number of significant free agent contributors: DE Trevor Pryce, who led the team with 13 sacks, RB Mike Anderson, DT Justin Bannan, CB Corey Ivy and OLB Gary Stills. 2005: Negotiated the contracts of draft picks FB Justin Green and LB Mike Smith...Ravens signed 3 current starters: WR Derrick Mason, CB Samari Rolle and G Keydrick Vincent. 2003: Became the team’s director of pro personnel, overseeing all aspects of the pro personnel department. 2000-02: Promoted to the Ravens’ assistant director of pro personnel in 2000...Conducted the advance scouting of Ravens opponents and provided reports to the coaches. 1996-99: Kokinis was the Ravens’ Northeast area scout for 4 years, and also conducted “the box” workouts of college prospects before moving over to pro personnel...Moved to Baltimore with the Modell franchise.

1991-95: (with Cleveland) Began his NFL scouting career with the Browns in 1991 after serving an internship in the team’s operations department.

COLLEGE: Graduated from Hobart College with a B.A. in psychology and earned his master’s degree in sports management at the University of Richmond (1991), while working as a graduate assistant coach for the Spiders’ baseball team...He played both football and baseball during his collegiate career, earning ECAC Baseball Player of the Year honors in 1989 as a pitcher for the Statesmen, and was selected to represent the conference in a New York vs. New Jersey All-Star Game played at Yankee Stadium.

PERSONAL: A 2-sport athlete at Wethersfield (CT) HS, George received the John Warren Potter Memorial Award, which recognizes competitiveness, school and team spirit and outstanding character...He currently serves on the board of directors of the Carmine, Frank, Mangini Foundation, which provides grants and scholarships to underprivileged youth...George and his wife, Elizabeth, have a daughter, Marissa (8), and twins Peter and Ella (3)...The family resides in Owings Mills, MD.

PERSONNEL BACKGROUND: 1991-95 (Cleveland Browns); 1996-2007 (Baltimore Ravens)

Outside of years of experience, the backgrounds are similar.. Koks has more years in the league and seems to lean more towards the Pro player side.. TJ has fewer years of experience but leans more towards the draft and undrafted FA side... (actually, there backgrounds do complement each others)

The other big difference is that Koks and Mangini have a long standing relationship. That may, in itself be the sway factor in his favor.

Keep in mind, if you look at it, there is overlap for TJ and Koks. They worked together on the Baltimore staff until TJ joined Savage here in Cleveland. So those two guys should know each other pretty well.

Depending on thier relationship in BMore,,, it could be a very nice fit if Koks comes here.. or it could be over in a NY Second

And there's nothing saying that TJ isn't ready to move up. If he and Mangini hit it off that is. so he may actually be the best alternative to Koks if it comes to Koks turning us down.

Hey Spec just something i found in a thread here somewhere..

Quote:

Accorsi debunks the theory that a general manager is best qualified coming through the scouting ranks, since the draft is the lifeblood of the NFL.

"Number one, I think he did plenty of college scouting," Accorsi said. "Number two, [former NFL executive and Hall of Famer] Jim Finks always told me that for the GM job, it's more important to have a pro personnel background.

"His reasoning was you always have time to prepare for the draft. What's more important is to know the league, not only the players but what it takes to play in the league. The NFL game changes, positions change. The coaches know the league and the pro personnel guys know the league. A lot of the college scouts, they don't see the NFL games much.

"Listen, it's the person that matters, but you're better off being a pro guy because you're going to know the league. You can always get ready for the draft. Finks would preach, "Look at pro tape, look at pro tape."

What i'm trying to say is by finding pro player 's that would fit your system...You now have a shopping list to give your college scouts to go find.....Coke has the pro's broke down and it would be up to TJ to find those college players that are as close to the ones that Coke asked for...

And they've worked together before so there shouldn't be much of a learning curve..I really feel with a Coke and TJ team we can do fine.

Spags is no doubt,, NOT A LEFTOVER... I have a feeling he's gonna be a good HC.

My only question about Pioli is that people keep fawning over him as if he's the potential savior of a franchise... maybe he is, maybe he isn't, but we'd all be hard pressed to believe he ever made a final decision in NE without Belichicks consent.. that to me makes him a ?.

But even at that, he's not a left over either.

Wow,, if Jim Finks says it and Accorsi agrees, I'd say that's a pretty good plan..

Now that's more the way it works...Not like Florio was spewin'...

PEEN...Read that...That is how it goes...No team in their right mind would take a 5M payout when a player's TRADED...

If he's KEPT or RELEASED we're on the hook...

TRADED and it goes to new team...But it won't come to that because much like ALL trades...This new team will sign him longer than 2 years and this entire deal is OVER...

We need to trade him before March 15...Or we'll take that 5M cap hit regardless...As soon as it's paid we're on the hook...

This is why I don't see how many can get their panties in a wad over this Koke thing...

If I'm Lerner...I DO NOT want my GM out Scouting College Players...I want him all over the NFL Players...

There's a reason teams have a Scouting Department...Bring me as much info as u can...Myself and Mangini will make the final decision...

And YES...We should keep McCreight here...Keenan/McCreight/Kokinis should be the 1-2-3 punch with Mangini runnin' what goes on on the field...And Mangini should also STAY OUT OF RYAN'S BUSINESS...Let him run this Defense the way he wants it...AGGRESSIVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1st let me say I have no probs with what Lerner is doing and didn't really favor any "combo" over another one .. Pioli/Kocothe dude from the Iggles .... Mangini/Mcdaniels/Spags/Ferientz .. THEY ALL HAVE HUGE ASS QUESTION MARKS ... and reading some defend Mangini and Koke and watching others lambast them and defend the others just re-inforces why I hardly post any more ..

there either CLUELESS HOMERS that will go to stupid ass measures to defend them ... like Mangini and the winning record in two seasons .. like thats the tell all as opposed to overall record and the EPIC MELTDOWN at the end of the season that had nuttin to do with him .. *LOL* ... like I said ... CLUELESS HOMERS ..

or there just the Sky is falling Gloom and Doomers who just point to the overall losing record and act like thats the be all end all ..

its a joke and just re-inforces why I am harldy if ever here anymore .. so THANKS GUYS .. i appreciatte that .. *L* ..

anyhow why i decided to chime in for a sec ... and like i said I have no probs with the hires of Jeanie and Coke (Psst .. this is for both the clueless homers and gloom and doomers .... ACCORSI RECCOMENDED THEM BOTH .. I see some of U dolts arguing for one against the other based on Ernie's reccomendation .. WELL HE RECCOMENDED THEM BOTH ... *L*) ...

but one thing folks just want to gloss over and get confused about .. and U alluded to it here .. when we hire Koke we will need to hire someone or keep McCreight or whatever his name is and pray he knows what hes doing ... to "head" up the draft side that has CONNECTIONS with the scouts and knows the good ones .. and also CONNECTIONS with the college coaches and knows them and witch scouts know them and the coaches will give them the good info .. thats the part that if all the info were getting about his job duties in Ratville are true he will be behind the 8 ball .. if he did nothing (witch I highly doubt) to VERY LITTLE then that will be a problem ..

it is not the end of the world .. but it can not be GLOSSED OVER like no big deal and use the phrase ... we don't need a GM on the road scouting .. IT RUNS ALOT DEEPER THAN THAT ...

like I said no matter who we hired at either position was going to have HUGE QUESTION MARKS ... so I am not poo pooing the hire(s) .... just pointing sumptin out that lots of U just want to make light of .. it appears it will DEFINETLY be one of Kokes weaknesses ...

carry on with your .... your .... well some things are just better left unsaid ...

It's ALWAYS been that way here on MANY topics. Couch/Holcomb, Frye/DA, DA/BQ, not to mention the constant bickering over draft picks, who should be cut and who to should be signed as FA's.

So if you wanna make up excuses? You'll have to do better than that oh omnipitant one.

Get a grip. It's not like eveyone was wondering where you were or begging for your return. Either post or don't. I doubt anybody gives a damn one way or the other. But you need to quit acting like you're the return of Paul Brown................

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Kard12, a great read! We have us a mountain. But dumb as can be, here I go again, getting positive and all hopeful and junk, once again, bit by the ol' "there's always next year" bug, and I promised I wouldn't, but hell-o, it is my Brownies, tghe Elf is calling us to glory, and it isn't RAC wasting us again. So saddle up pardner, time to break trail, and hope the ManginiChild in the HyperBerea wilderness can geta bunch of it done. I think that having Lerner in your corner counts for a bunch. Get some of this, y'all. Bring it on!

Agreed Dayton Dawg and hey from Springfield. deciding who is to do what and keeping their nose out of somebody else's job is a corner needs turned. A whole bunch of what is wrong, the decline of what was hopefully better, the problem with where we are, and the assurance that we will be in a bad spot again is . . . simple turf battles. Who is winning whatever we are playing for in FO and struggles. Put it away. People causing trouble need to be kept busier; most probs are chemeistry, communication, or people issues. Lerner sees it and is trying to not step in it again.

but one thing folks just want to gloss over and get confused about .. and U alluded to it here .. when we hire Koke we will need to hire someone or keep McCreight or whatever his name is and pray he knows what hes doing ... to "head" up the draft side that has CONNECTIONS with the scouts and knows the good ones .. and also CONNECTIONS with the college coaches and knows them and witch scouts know them and the coaches will give them the good info .. thats the part that if all the info were getting about his job duties in Ratville are true he will be behind the 8 ball .. if he did nothing (witch I highly doubt) to VERY LITTLE then that will be a problem ..

it is not the end of the world .. but it can not be GLOSSED OVER like no big deal and use the phrase ... we don't need a GM on the road scouting ..

What exactly, if anything, were you trying to say with this post? For one, I can't even read it. And then you carry on about how the way people act on the site bothers you and you never want to post anymore, but you prove yourself hypocritical by calling other fans "clueless homers."

Fact of the matter is everyone has an opinion and their right to express it. If you were Paul Brown or a highly touted mind in the NFL, you probably wouldn't have time to complain about the people on this site.

Just clicking on me?

I like Spags. The combo of him and Heckert was my #1 choice. McDanials and Pioli was #2.

That too! I can't believe I left out the Baltimore comment! After they beat us the first go around I nearly flipped cuz he was so cocky about Dallas.

He has the gall to call us clueless and dolts when he won't even own up to his past dumb posts.

Now I'm starting to question his beliefs on Quinn.

It's like the guy who comes home to find his wife cheating on him, only to ask why dinner isn't on the table. Oblivious, in his own little world where he's right and everyone else is a "clueless dolt." Then he'll conveniently leave the board so he doesn't have to own up to anything because we're so "clueless." At least I'm willing to admit where I was wrong and adjust accordingly.

Say what you want about me but I've been like a sponge ever since I came here, I'll have my arguments but I'll keep an open mind.

Help yourself to post! I'm glad when you do. But to blame it on "bickering" over pointless things is absurd. It's happenned since Dawg Talk began and it has never stopped you before. In summary, you playing the victim and blaming others for your absence? It's pure......................

So it wasn't intended as a lecture. I was just pointing out the obvious. You? Playing the victim? Quite unbecoming of you.

It's a message board. That's kind of, uh, what we do here?

Not that Diam needs me to defend him, but IMO he's one of the few posters in this place who can say something interesting. Most of you simply blab on and on and on and on and on and on and on and....

Not that I mind, I still read most of it when I get bored.

"But the terms of Anderson's 2008 contract extension make that payment guaranteed in the event Anderson were released prior to that date."

One of the best articles I've read from Grossi...of course most were the obvious. Only the above statement did I find a little off target.

"RELEASE" is the key word...why in darnation would we even consider releasing DA???

Obviously if we trade him before the deadline the other team inherits the 2 years remaining on the contract. Roster bonus and a modest salary. For a starter - if that's their intentions a pretty good deal and maybe they would make a new contract right off the bat or wait a season of experience with the QB before extending in new portion into it.

I didn't know we interviewed Kokinis on Sunday...good to hear. That means all that Randy heard about him has probably been confirmed and he got reassurance from Kokinis that he's on board 99% (100% comes after seeing the contract).

So far so good.

Of course we blab on and on......it's a message board for a football team that hasn't been to the playoffs but once in, what? 15 years?...... and it's our off season.

We'll be blabbing for the next 8 months......

I like Diam. He's pretty smart when it comes to football. But this whole "You guys keep me from posting. Thanks" thing was just silly.

I like him posting here. But the whole pity party, cry me a frickin' river thing was what got me. Not Diam himself. I mean if he wants to post, I welcome it!

But I'm not buying into the "it's you guys fault" thing. That's pure BS. We've had silly debates based on pure conjecture for a decade now. At least those of us that have been here since the beginning. I mean think about it? This is our FOURTH hiring since 99 in the FO. So this is the FOURTH time this same thing has happenned.

And you know what? NONE of those silly, speculative type debates have ever disuaded him from posting before. So while I like Diam, and him posting here, I'm not buying that BS.

Unless of course you wish to believe "the fourth time is a charm".

I like him too, I just hate when we're called the "clueless dolts" when a lot of us so-called "non-experts" have been pretty spot on.

For example, Peen has been pretty close on his analysis for several years now, yet he's apparently "clueless." What seemed whacky for awhile proved to be true. I gotta give him props for it.
