IRVINE, Calif. – The box of crackers Debra Rogoff bought from the grocery store had some crackerjack in it — an envelope stuffed with $10,000.

Yet the Irvine woman was more curious than ecstatic about her daughter's find. After all, who would leave money in such a place?

"We just thought, 'This is someone's money,'" she said. "We would never feel good about spending it."

Rather than go on a shopping spree, the family called police and was initially told the money could be part of a drug drop.

Police later heard from store managers at Whole Foods in Tustin that an elderly woman had come in a few days earlier, hysterical because she had mistakenly returned a box of crackers with her life savings inside. In a mix-up the store restocked the box rather than composting it.

The Lake Forest woman, whose identity was not released, had lost faith in her bank and decided the box would be a safer place for the money.

Luckily for her, the box of Annie's Sour Cream and Onion Cheddar Bunny crackers were bought by the Rogoffs, who discovered the crisp $100 bills in an unmarked white envelope on Oct. 10.

The Rogoffs never heard from the woman and didn't receive a reward, but Rogoff did return to Whole Foods a couple weeks later.

"I asked them if I could have another box of crackers," she said with a laugh. The store obliged.

I can't believe that that family didn't get a reward. If someone found 10,000 dollars of my money, and gave it back, I would give them some significant compensation. Unbelievable.

What an idiot. Hasn't she heard of the FDIC?

I take it back. What a ungrateful, classless idiot. She could've at least thanked the family for turning in the money.

Why would anybody return a box of crackers?

I can see returning a tv that doesn't work. I can see returning a coat that doesn't fit. But, a box of crackers?

What in the heck are the odds of somebody buying a box of crackers, putting 10,000 in that box of crackers, then returning the box of crackers? - WTF!!!

If I don't stop now, I could keep typing, and typing, as to why this doesn't make any sense to me.

Older ladies can be senile and crazy when they reach that age. But then so can men..

Exactly, precisely my thoughts.

Food does NOT get returned and restocked. Ever.

Perhaps returned, get your money back if there's a problem.........returned and put back on the shelf? I don't think so. And if so, I sure as heck wouldn't buy what someone returned........you would?

I didnt say I would, I may have and never knew it. I was asking you because the way you said "never" with such certainty ,I thought maybe you had experience in this area. I have no idea what the policy is with stores as far as returns. I would think anything being returned to the store would be because of a defect, which I couldnt see going back on the shelves. Unless it was one on one of those damaged items, clearance racks.

Something does seem fishy though.

That's pretty much all I was saying.......if food gets returned, it's because there was a recall on it. Otherwise, I don't want a store allowing returns (unless the box was empty or something like that - but that's damn tough to prove). But, regardless, if the food returned wasn't good enough for the returnee, it's not good enough for me. And it sure shouldn't be put back on the shelf.

We're not talking clothes that don't fit, or a crockpot that your wife got 2 of, we're talking food.

I work at a grocery store and sometimes non-damaged things are returned. We treat all returned items as damaged (not put back on the shelf, beyond that depends on the department), whether it is opened or not.

I'm not sure why the lady would've returned the box of crackers. And if all of this was within a time span quick enough to buy the crackers and return them, how did she forget she put the money there? Why did the store put back up an opened box of crackers? I really think there's more questions then answers on this one.

I have no comment on the money itself. I have an envelope of money on my desk I'm using as the savings for a road trip this summer. Though its because it is easier for me not to spend it that way rather then keep it in the bank and it be fair game, not a lack-of trust in my bank.

Open up a 6 month CD. You can't access the money without paying fees and you get interest to boot. Seems like a no brainer to me rather than leaving it in a desk...

Well, if this is really her "life savings" and it's only $10K.. then she can't afford to give them anything substantial but a really heart felt THANK YOU would be nice.
