Free-agent outfielder Trot Nixon has agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cleveland Indians, ESPN.com's Peter Gammons reports.

Nixon, who has spent his entire pro baseball career with the Boston Red Sox organization and was popular with the team's fans for his gritty playing style, was not offered arbitration by the team after spending eight years as its starting right fielder.

In 982 career games, Nixon has a .278 batting average with 133 home runs and 523 RBIs. He hit .357 in Boston's four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series and delivered a key bases-clearing triple in Game 4.

Like his 100% hustle style of play, should work well with fans and in the clubhouse. But...another injury-comeback player? Is that the only kind we target nowadays after the Millwood success?

Well the only choices in Free Agency these days are low cost guys coming off injuries that have a chance to come back strong, or over-paid guys coming off big years, who are likely to regress back to mediocre players after a contract year.

I don't know what too think about this one. The dude is a winner, but this deal, will choke some of the young guns in the outfield. I guess, we will have too wait and see what plays out from this one.

Hmmmmmmm, I don't know what to think of this one. Hopefully the guy is still worth something and isn't wasting time and money for us.

Good leader and good in the locker room.

A guy who was signed for his veteran presence as much as his talent, I think.

Young guns in the outfield? Who?

I will admit I am a casual baseball observer... but, the Jason Michael in place of Coco Crisp project was an utter failure.

I'd have to disagree with ya on this one, even with Jason starting off rather slowly last year, Jason brought just as much to the hitting aspect as did CoCo, even with the Coco got on base and made things happen, so did Jason batting behind Grady, once jason got on track to hitting 2nd in the order, those two egnited many of our wins, as for fielding, Jason did what he was brought here to do in the outfield, play averge defence for a left fielder, coco has speed in the field, but no arm, Jason cant cover as much ground as coco, but he makes up with positioning and a better arm. Dont forget part of the trade was Marte at 3rd, so even if Coco and Jason trade was a wash between one's hitting and ones fielding we still amde out by adding Marte. Just my .02

Hope he works out for the Tribe; I loved him as a Red Sox player.

That is soooo not true

Jason Michaels
.267 9HR 55 RBI 132 hits Last year

Coco Crisp .264 8 HR 36 RBI 109 hits

AND we got Andy Marte out of that deal. Who cares if Mota didn't pan out.

No way the signing of Trot Nixon takes playing time away from Grady.

Nixon will platoon with Blake in RF. I like his style. He's a hard nosed player and a winner. What's not to like? Choo is the odd man out for now. But he's young (24) and will probably get a chance to contribute to the Tribe before the year is out.

Good move by Shapiro.

I can honestly say this signing suprised me..But I think Trot could be a real good player for us since all of us know how much Wedge likes to platoon

I'd just as soon experiment with a minor leaguer, let alone I can't stand his first name.

Must be short for "Trotwood" or something ??

This is a good signing for the Featherheads, IMO. The guy isn't a superstar, just a good ballplayer. He won't hit 30 homers, but he'll get you 15-20 homers and 30 doubles if healthy, won't clog the base paths, and is a damned good rightfielder. Plus, from what I hear, he's an in-your-face kind of clubhouse presence that won't be afraid to tell some of these younger players (Peralta) that a casual approach won't cut it.
Outfield depth, veteran leadership, and he knows how to win.
I like it.
