Just like the title says has anyone wrote a letter of interest for a position, and can you give me some tips on what worked for you? Or, if you hire, do these really make a huge difference in the process? What are some thing you look for in them? etc, etc, etc.

What's going on is this. I got laid off the week before Thanksgiving as part of a mandatory reduction in hours. It sucked pretty bad because I did know it was coming but was told I had until the end of the year. Now they are bringing me back early in 2009 which is good, but in the time since I had been laid off the marketing manager at my branch (my immediate boss) was told to take a job in PA or eave the company. Our customer base has been flat for a while and the branch manager wants a change.
So I talked to him today and he told me the position is wide open. So I am going for it. I have a strong resume and have been with the company for 3 years and was recently accepted into a training program to be a marketing manager in our region. But then got laid off.

So anyways I really want this bad and never had to write a letter like this before. I usually just submit my resume and interview, you know? Any help is appreciated,,thanks!

Hey BF337, I hire folks all the time for positions in engineering.. Mostly, they hit the highlights of thier experience in a letter as it pertains to the job opening.

For instance,, If I say I'm looking for a C# programmer,, then they may highlight any partiular experience with that lanquage. By highlight, I mean,, what applications were they working on, what results did they get with the work they performed... that kinda stuff.. Not detailed, just skim it. Then on the resume, they would key in and give details.

All you really want to do with a cover letter is:

1. Express interest in the position (don't call it a job,, it's a position)
2. Express what qualifies you for that position
3. What goals (if you have some that you know they'll like) you have in mind
4. Availability to start the new Position

In your case, you want to discuss that this seems to dovetail right into the plan you had before the layoff.. Meaning you were accepted into a training program for this position by your company before the lay off and you were looking forward to completing that class work successfully.

You may also say that as the assistent to the person that had the job before, you were able to learn quite a bit about the function of the Position but you are looking forward to adding a stronger push to develop a stronger and larger client base... (or something like that.. best to use your own words)

Best of luck to you,, feel free to PM me or send me a copy of it for review,, I'd be happy to do it for ya.,

Thanks Rick. I actually worked on it for a few hours and had a few people read it and they said it kicked ass, so I am happy. I love to write but wasn't sure exactly how to do it since I never had to before.

I did basically what you said in the letter by touching on my resume highlights and expressing my excitement for the position while giving brief info on a few things I can bring. I think it is a very good strong letter and I know I will interview very well. He really liked me when I was interviewing for the management program in October and I am confident I can do this. I was the only one out of our branch to be selected for that training so I know I can get this.

Wish me luck! Next Thursday I interview with him and then I have to interview with the regional marketing manager. This would be a huge step for me professionally and the $15k more a year and company car aren't too shabby either

I had my interview today and my letter went over very well. I have a very very good feeling after the interview! He said the interview would run anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half, and mine went almost 3 hours hehe. He said he was impressed and liked all of my ideas and my knowledge and I will find out Monday or Tuesday of next week.

This promotion would be one great Christmas present for sure. Wish me luck!

Sorry about the luck, but good luck with this. Be clear and specific. And accept my prayers and wish for a better and prosperous New Year in 2009
