Anyone ?? I hear from hunters that numbers are down and in truth I just haven't seen as many in the woods as compared to previous years. I got an 8 point and a big doe so I just wonder what everyone bagged.

IRE...first, congratulations...

Here in our area of Ohio, the number of hunters is down...the area north and west of Columbus..the farm country.

In past years, workers didn't mind missing a couple of day to hunt. With the recession, I doubt many took the time off work, unless they had vacation time they had to burn.

I got a doe monday at 11:30 or so. Actually, my wife and I are cutting it up right now - just taking a break.

I have another antlerless permit, but I got a cold and decided to wait to go out again until either the shotgun weekend, Dec. 20 and 21, or the muzzle loader weekend, the 27th through the 30th.

I'd like to get one with my muzzle loader, simply cause I got it last year and haven't been able to hunt with it yet.

I am a hunter, just not into deer hunting, but I do spend a lot of times in the woods and I was just telling my wife the other day that the deer numbers seemed way down this year. Thats just based on my own personal observations out in the woods. I dont think I saw a buck all summer and only a few does. Not too many rut marks to speak of either compared to past years.

I have a seen a spit load of Wild Turkey though!!

Two doe, shot one, claimed another that was shot by a young kid and they did not bother to look for her. She was a beauty too!

I've got 235 acres in Geurnsey so they're thick in there and not at all pressured on my land.

A good friend who couldn't go with me this year due to work called me 20 min. ago and told me he got a HUGE buck on the Indiana border..... bad news is that it cost him one 2008 Ford F-250 . He said that the deer went over the hood, smashed the top of the truck and half of it was in the middle of the road . He is o.k. and insurance will pay for the damage so he can laugh it off now.

As my wife and I continued cutting up my deer, I heard a shot behind my house. Looked out, and there's a hunter about 150 yds from my house, and 14 deer running straight west. (behind my house is about, going both ways, probably in the neighborhood of 400 acres of woods, grassland, and open area).

I grabbed the binoculars right away and watched the herd head west. Then I heard a single shot. Another one gone.

They said that the estimated deer population is 700,000 for Ohio. This is the first time in a a few years that I haven't heard a lot of shots fired during gun week.Thought I would hear a lot today since people were off work, but only heard about 12 shots all day long and they were at a distance. We had 5 guys hunting the farm and noone saw anything.Usually everyone of us tags out,so I think the deer herd is down myself.

My old man shot two doe the other morning. He said he got to his spot at around 6am, drank a beer, then walked to his stand---climbed up and as he was pulling his gun up he saw the first one----shot, followed the blood trail and found her. Then as he was walking up on the dead one he noticed something outta the corner of his eye, and it was another doe---he got a shot off and got the second one.

Some young guys that associate with our family called the house the other day inviting the old man to go out hunting with them---they said they were "running deer" and got 7 the other day. They wanted my old man to head out with them on another day----but my dad declined.

He said it was because of the way they were going about the hunt, and the amount of oxygen and adrenaline in the deer when you "run 'em," I guess it really screws up the quality of the meat when the deer has been subject to this kind of hunt---resulting in lower quality meat with a poor flavor and texture.

I am not a big hunter, but trust my old mans judgement; he says that the way to make sure you get a deer that is going to be great on the table is to kill the animal when it is calm and not in any kind of panic---like when it doesn't know you are there and is really relaxed and just kind of walking around, grazing and what-have-you.

I can't question the guy, he has filled our freezer every year for as long as I can remember. And he butchers the animal himself---only taking a small break to cook up the tenderloins which are some of the most amazing tasting meat that you will ever eat.

We currently have two stripped carcasses hanging in our garage.

A couple years ago I brought a girlfriend home after the old man had butchered one, and she freaked out seeing that skinned and pretty much gutted animal corpse just hanging there. It was just a head and scrap hanging out there---she did not like it; we had to use the side door to come and go for the rest of the night.

My son and I both shot our first deer this year. They were both 8-pointers, on 8 Nov 08 in the morning. I saw four does and my son saw one doe in addition to the bucks we shot.

We hunt on about 100 acers of my firneds family land, all Friday Saturday & Sunday. actually my son was done friday getting a nice does with a 70 yard shot drop it right where it stood, since he got his deer mom made him help her saturday and he took his deer over to his friends house where they skinned & started getting it ready to process,

I took a nice button buck Saturday, afternoon at about 70 yards on a dead sprint, I'll admit kind of a lucky shot but if ya dont toss the lead at it ya ant gonna hit it. so I was a dog the rest of the weekend walking about 50 miles in two days, my 46 years old legs are rubber today, but well worth it.

My wife and I processed my deer on Sat. We canned some of it - I love canned venison. We also used our meat grinder and ground up about 30 lbs - mixed with some ground chuck. We use that for anything people use hamburger for - from tacos, to burritos, hamburg gravy over mashed potatos, spaghetti sauce, lasagna - you name it, we use it.

We also tried a new thing sat. for supper. We ground venison with bacon in order to make hamburger patties. We went with a 50-50 mix, and while good, it was a touch bacony for me. I think the right mix would be more like 65% venison to 35% bacon. But like I said, it was good.

We did about 7 lbs like that, so the next time we do them, I'll cut some venison off one of the roasts and grind it, then mix it in. My wife loved it, but like I said, it was a bit bacony for me, although definetly good, and defininely something we'll be having again soon.

I can still get one more antlerless deer, so we may have quite a bit more venison in the near future.

Anyone in Lucas county know of a good spot to hunt? Preferably private land, as the state owned hunting areas are, in my opinion, just flat out dangerous to hunt in. Too many people.

Arch we mix in bacon also....we use 2 lbs bacon to 5 lbs venison...just enough that you get alittle bacon flavor...

Well, that would make a difference, wouldn't it?

Like I said, my wife really liked it, but I would've favored a little more venison. And when I make them again, that's how it will be.

On a side note: How many hunters have a wife that helps cut up the meat with you, and takes charge in the processing department? My wife was in charge, I was cutting venison and chuck roast for the grinder, and my daughter was helping cut venison. A true family affair, and man, I loved it!!!

And then, how many of you have wives that are anxious for you to get another deer this year?

I went with a friend yesterday - around here. I can't get another one in fulton county, or henry, or williams. I have to go to lucas county (an urban area). My wife just couldn't understand why I wasn't taking my gun. I tried to explain it, but, with Ohio's zones, urban areas, permits, tags, etc. it's hard to explain to someone that just wants to eat.

That used to be the main reason I liked hunting season so much when I was a kid . We used to go to W.Va every deer season and the entire clan would end up at my grandfathers house to have a cuttin up party . We'd have anywhere from 15 to 20 people in the barn processing all the deer that we had harvested while the music was going on, stories about the one that got away and grandma cooking up some bacon wrapped loin snacks . I think back on those days and I have so many wonderful memories so I appreciate the joy you feel Arch .

I went to visit my parents in Richmond Hts. this past weekend and saw two bucks standing in their backyard. One was a 6 point buck and the other seemed to be as well but it was missing one antler. They were so close even I could have shot them...That is if I didn't want to get arrested.

While we didn't have but just the 3 of us, I motioned to my wife to get the camera and take a picture of my daughter and myself cutting meat. My daughter had no clue some pictures were being taken, and that's the way I wanted it.

At some point, she'll look at the pictures and say/think "that was me and dad, when I was 8 and he was 40, cutting up the deer he got."

Memories. At some point in time, that's all any of us will have of our loved ones.
