O.J. Simpson sentenced to at least 15 years By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer LAS VEGAS – A broken O.J. Simpson has been sentenced to at least 15 years in prison for a Las Vegas hotel armed robbery by a judge who rejected his apology and said, "It was much more than stupidity." Simpson stood stone-faced Friday when Judge Jackie Glass quickly rattled off his punishment after he pleaded with her that he didn't mean to steal from anybody when he tried to retrieve memorabilia. He appeared ready to break down in tears as he told that he was "sorry and confused" before going into a rambling and emotional 5-minute declaration. "I didn't want to steal anything from anyone ... I'm sorry, sorry," he said. Glass ruled before sentencing that Simpson cannot be freed on bail pending possible appeal. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/oj_simpson

And you KNOW he'll appeal, hoping to get a more sympathetic jury or judge.

As much as I hate Orenthal, I have to agree with this. There is no way any other first time offender would be sentenced to this much time. Having the Goldmans sitting there is indicative of the fact that OJ is being senenced more harshly for getting off on the murder charge. The Goldmans had nothing to do with this case, so why were they allowed in the courtroom??

It does seem harsh, but I just look at it as he's finally getting what's been coming at him.

15 years is a little over the top considering the crime.
I know someone who KILLED his wife and he only did 5 years of a 7 year sentence. That guy will burn in hell too.
I also have a buddy who got a 5 year gig for armed robbery.
IMO, this 15 year sentence, or 18 year (I heard earlier), is a "make-up verdict" for what happened years ago. I know that that is probably not true---cuz our legal system wouldn't do something like that. But it sure feels like it.

In response to those that feel this punishment was too harsh. Here's a list of the crimes he was convicted of: ( link) These were two charges of first degree kidnapping, two of armed robbery, two of assault with a deadly weapon, two of coercion with a deadly weapon, burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit a crime, kidnapping and robbery.

ESPN reported that the judge said to OJ at the beginning of the sentencing hearing, At the beginning of this trial, I wondered if you were ignorant or just arrogant, as the trial proceeded I realized, you are both.

Wow,,, I guess what comes around goes around (or is that the other way around)
I was always of the opinion that OJ killed Ron and Nicole.. an excellent legal team, a judge that needed a labotomy and inept prosecution all combined to muddy the water so much, the jury couldn't do anything but what they did.
So I guess now, he's getting some jail time...

Any crime involving a deadly weapon ought to be prosecuted harshly. He was convicted of more than just the robbery.

Good riddance, I hope we don't have to hear about the guy anymore. Still didn't like seeing the Goldmans at the trial.

And of course good ol' Rob Goldman and his wife were at the proceedings to get their next 15 minutes of fame. I'm sorry about what happened to his son, but he's clearly using that to get on more talk shows, write a book, perhaps he'll get his own talk show in the near future. What a hell of a way to get popular.

I tend to agree....people who do far worse get far less.
I would expect on appeal he will get more like 5-6 years.

I'm not arguing that at all. Hell, instead of a bigger sentence, they get a bigger bonus.

15 years does seem rather long for that particular crime or set of crimes,, but maybe I have this wrong, they were talking about the minimum time he will serve being 9 years and that with good behavior, he could be out on parole in 5.
If I have that right, that actually seems to fit the crimes better... at least to me.
Remember, I still think he got away with one on the murder charges in the mid 90's.. I thought he was guilty back then. JMO however.. so I have no mercy for him...
Also, his arrogance is what kinda gets him into these situations.. so I have little mercy for him..... But that's just me.

Because this is America where we don't have secret trials or tribunals against members of our society. Anyone can witness a trial if they desire to do so and the sitting Judge has set no stipulation against it.

Long for that set of crimes???? Did you LOOK at what he was CONVICTED of?
Ah what the hell, let's just give him 90 days in the county, 45 hours of community service and let him go.
What would YOU desire the sentence to be if he held YOU at gunpoint, depriving you of your liberty to move about and robbed you???
Armed robbery and kidnapping.....these are VIOLENT offenses therefore they carry a harsh sentence. The idea is to try and deter people from committing these offenses........ya see.

Oh I agree with you. I would like this case to be the norm. Like another poster said he knew someone who killed his wife and got only 5 years. Just for a first offense I thought it seemed harsh. However karma always comes to a person for their deeds.

I'm not fan of the guy that's for sure. So what he received seems reasonable to me but of course I'm using hind site as well and the law shouldn't. The judge is apparently able to give that length of sentence because of Nevada law. If it's over turned later, she can certainly take the position she tired to keep his sorry ass off the streets.

I hate the SOB Shep,, I think he's a murderer and should be locked up forever.. But for those crimes he's JUST been conviced of I beleived that the Maximum is 33 years.. 15 was a number someone else brought up and 9 is what I heard on TV this morning.
9 seems about as reasonable as any given the nature of how the system seems to work today.. and yeah, it erks me to know he could be out in as little as 5 years..
