CLEVELAND (AP)—LeBron James reacted strongly to Charles Barkley’s comments that the Cavaliers star isn’t showing respect for Cleveland fans and his teammates by discussing his possible free agency following the 2010 season.

“He’s stupid. That’s all I’ve got to say about that,” James said Friday night before the Cavaliers’ game against Golden State.

Barkley made the comments on TNT’s NBA studio show and Dan Patrick’s radio show.

“If I was LeBron James, I would shut the hell up,” the Hall of Famer said on Patrick’s show. “I’m a big LeBron fan. He’s a stud. You gotta give him his props. I’m getting so annoyed he’s talking about what he’s going to do in two years. I think it’s disrespectful to the game. I think it’s disrespectful to the Cavaliers.”

James, under contract for two more seasons, was bombarded with questions about his future when the Cavaliers visited New York to play the Knicks on Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers can offer him an extension as early as July 1, 2009. There has long been speculation James will eventually end up in one of the NBA’s larger markets and the Knicks have cleared salary-cap space in anticipation of the 2010 free-agent class.

“I think July 1, 2010, is a very big day,” James said when the Cavaliers were in New York. “It’s probably going to be one of the biggest days in free-agent history in the NBA. So a lot of teams are gearing up to try to prepare themselves to be able to put themselves in position to get one of the big free-agent market guys.”

I think Barkley's right...not sure what else LeBron said...but for him to talk about it like this is just wrong....nobody is bigger then the game....

I don't get Barkley. He repeatedly slammed us during the '07 playoff run. - Saying again and again that there was no way we would beat Detroit. Then, at the beginning of the '08 season, he says that he feels sorry for Lebron because Cavs management has not provided a supporting cast. Now, Charles wants to take our side? He needs to shut up.
Having said that, I do appreciate the support Sir Charles.

So you're saying that from a speaking standpoint, he's a bumbling boob accept for the few times he actually says something you want to hear?

Just wondering.........................

I have to disagree.

The fact of the matter is that it is something that Lebron has repeatedly said fo the last two years. "Im in Cleveland now and that is what my main focus is, winning a championship with Cleveland." He has never said he is going to leave. The problem is that almost every interview he is asked that same damn question. I don't know how else LeBron is supposed to answer that question, he's not a rude guy to the media so he's not just gonna blow up and tell the media to quit asking him.

Charles Barkley has clearly had it out for LeBron and the Cavs since LeBron inked his first contract. I would love to get every quote Barkley has ever said with negativity towards LeBron and the Cavs.

Barkley is the one who needs to shut up. I can't see where leBron has said anything disrespectful about his contract situation. Personally if there is anyone that is disrespectful about it it's the entire media, every person in the media has asked LeBron that question, he answered it now let it go.

I don't see anybody hounding Bosh, Wade or any of the other marquee free agents so why do they have to do it to LeBron?

Chuck is usually right about matters that relate to basketball. About everything else, yes, he usually is a bumbling idiot.

Just and FYI for everyone that doesn't know (Muni), Chuck loves this Cavs squad. In TNT's opening show this year, he went on record as taking the Cavs to beat Boston and win the East.

The reason Chuck used to hate on Cleveland was that we never had a legit PG. He used to hate that LB always had to create instead of being able to be a finisher at times throughout the game. Chuck loves Mo Williams.

The Cavs are on a tear right now,, the look good enough to win it all... I'd say that LBJ probably should put an end to the discussion and refuse to talk about it when it's brought up.

So, to a degree, I agree with Sir Charles.....

I agree with Barkley also. Lebron should just say I'll talk about my plans in 2010 and leave it at that from now on. He's gonna stay a Cav anyway

What was Lebron's full quote.. the quote in this article from Lebron sounds pretty generic and does not even imply Lebron will leave in 2010.. If memory reminds me.. there is going to be a lot of "big name" stars coming off contract that year.. so yes... teams are preparing to try to snag some names, not just Lebron.

I wonder if Lebron knows that Barkley is usually half crocked when hes on the air?

Lebron has already been qouted as saying "Thinking beyond this year would be a distraction and disservice to me, my teammates, my coaches, and the entire Cavaliers organization."

The Cavs will be in the Conference finals this year. i would put my life savings on it (barring injury to Lebron) Im hoping for the easy route and the Celtics and the Pistons will have to play each other before playing the Cavs. But the Celtics won the championship playing the hard teams (Cleveland, Detroit) and the lakers were easy for them. A Lakers team that shouldnt be taken lightly, even without Bynum, because they did beat the Spurs.

I'm absolutely freakin' sick of LeBron James. I don't care if he scores 60 pts a game. Take your bags, and go to New York, I don't freakin' care anymore. I'll help you move!

I'm so tired of how unprofessional LeBron is. He's done nothing to quiet the rumors that he's leaving. If you want to leave, fine, get out. But, as of now, you are still a Cleveland Cavalier. Saying you won't take less money for a championship? Screw you LeBron. Go play in Europe if $100 million is so much different than $75 million. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to live on either one. And hey, when you show up to the arena... How about wearing a suit! Or at least dress pants and a dress shirt? Wearing an Obama tee shirt to the arena? You look like a wanna be thug. How many times did you ever see Michael Jordan show up to the arena in anything other than a suit? What about Magic Johnson? What about even other great players today? Dewayne Wade? Kobe? etc. You are a professional, act like it!

I will support LeBron as long as he is part of this team. But I am getting tired of him. Sorry LeBron, but you are NOT bigger than this team. I am a Cleveland Cavaliers fan, not a LeBron James fan. Go to New York, and stick it!

If the feeling is Lebron has a strong desire to play in the big apple and not sigh an extension with Cleveland, why not trade him? The sooner the better.Get as much as you can for him.

Its not that I don't ne°issarily want him here. It's that I'm sick of him acting like a little crybaby. I'd love for him to stay in Cleveland, and shut up. But as long as he keeps adding fuel to the fire, and acting unprofessional, he's going to rub me the wrong way.

How the hell is he acting like a crybaby?

He's basically said the same thing for years, and it's the media driving the whole "Lebron to New York" thing. Lebron has never said anything more than, "I want to win championships, and I want to be with the team that can help me do that." It keeps the pressure on Ferry to make the right moves for the team. Everything else has been media driven bull crap.

I see no problem with what Lebron said. Some of the biggest names in the NBA will become free agents that year. He happens to be one of them. And yeah, Charles Barkley is, more often than not, an idiot. He may have picked the Cavs to win whatever, but should they show any sign of slipping, he'll be first in line to blast the organization from top to bottom, just as he has for years.

So, when asked "Would you take less money to win a bring in pieces around you to win a championshp", he didn't say "Come on, I didn't say that"

It's not purely media driven. But, keep blaming the media for Cleveland sports problems, it's apparently the cool thing to do.

OK i am very bias, but the SOB sat right in front of my daughter during a high school game (her knees were in his back) and he refused to sign an autoghraph during the game. Promised her one after the game (damn those fiveseconds would have killed him) Then after the game he stormed off the court walking right past her without signing.

GM, I hope your daughter didn't feel bad. I remember when I worked for the T-Wolves and watched LB's shootaround here a few years back. LB only signs for little kids. When I say little, I mean like 10 yr old and under.

It was actually kind of depressing watching all the kids that were like 13-18 who were lined up. He had no part of it.

My friends who work/worked for the Cavs say he does that everywhere.

GM, no offense, but maybe he forgot about the autograph when the game was over. And I don't blame the guy for not signing an autograph during the game. IMO, he shouldn't have been bothered for one DURING the game. Also, why would anyone over 14 or so WANT somebody's autograph unless they were going to sell it. As a kid, getting someone's autograph was an exciting thing. However, as an adult I don't care who you are, you aren't important enough for me to grovel over something you scribbled on a piece of paper. Just my 2 cents.

Have NEVER sold any of them and have no intention of selling any of them. Why? I'm a fan..................

I can only recall 2 times I have agreed with Sir Charles. The 2-3 years he said Cavs needed a point guard and this one. LBJ teases and flirts with the NY media on this subject. He could put it to rest until 2010 but he gives (knowingly) just enough to fan the NY flame.

I would think those who promote capitalism SO MUCH as their epitath would understand that marketing one's self to drive up the price when the time comes would be quite noble and smart!?????

Guess that only applies when it isn't so personal huh?

But what is he driving the price up t?. There is a salary cap, the Cavs can offer him the most money in that cap system. There is no doubt he is recieving a max contract, the max contract fron the Cavs will be higher than the max contract from any other team. So if it is all about capitalism then the Cavs offer the most capital. I thin of Lebron leaves here it is not about money, it is about going somewhere he feels he has the best chance to win titles and be a global icon. He is already a global icon and do the Knicks or the Nets offer him a better chance than the Cavs to win titles ?? It certainly doesnt look that way right now.

What it does is two fold.

One, it applies pressure to the Cavs to bring in more support in the way of players to garner a championship.

Secondly, it applies pressure to the Cavs to make LBJ an "offer he can't refuse".

Any way you slice it, it's self promotion. Marketing pure and simple. Using himself as a commodity to garner leverage.

Hey, that's The American Way, right?

I think that you are missing the point that Kingo was trying to make.

The cavs will offer 6 years 135 million and every other club will offer 5 years 100 million. Per league rules that is what he will be offered.

The offers are basically on the table, but your first point about putting pressure on the FO to build a winner does have merit.

He wasn't playing in the game. They were watching another game sitting in the stands. Their game was played AFTER the game they were watching was over.

Exactly what I was getting at. The thing about is also this. If Lebron is telling the truth about just wanting to win, wouldnt he try to do something to allow whatvever team he sign with a way to save cap space in order to surround him with good players?? Isnt that what Tim Duncan did with San Antonio?? You cant exactly expect a team to be able to surround you with top notch talent if you are taking up 25% of the cap space on your own.

I'm sure this is something that neither Ferry nor Gilbert need reminded of... There are 3 things every NBA player finds important in some order (aside from guns, strip clubs and fathering children)... and that's salary, championships, endorsements... the Cavs can completely control the salary, they have little to no control over endorsements.. so that leaves championships... I'm pretty sure they already know that is the one grip they have on LeBron and will do whatever they can to make it happen because if LeBron IS thinking about leaving, that is the one thing he could use as a viable excuse... he's not going to come out and say that he can't make enough endorsement money in Cleveland, he's going to say that they didn't do enough to win championships. I've said it before and I'll say it again.. Jordan with 1 ring is a great player, with 2 rings he's a legend, with 3 rings he's the best ever and with more than that, he's a brand name that will live on longer than him and profit far more than his salary ever did... LeBron is on the same path... He is going to need at least 2 rings otherwise he will forever be known as that great basketball player that struggled to win championships...

Good post.

As far as the endorsements goes, he has that now being in Cleveland. He's the 3rd highest athlete in endorsement dollars (behing Tiger and Phil Mickelson). That amount can only grow with more winning. Which is why I don't see him leaving for endorsements dollars....he can get that money in Cleveland, Oklahoma, Toronto or Portland. Just like Wilbon on PTI always says, "Madison Ave. will come to you if they want your name on their product."

Like you said, this isn't about one championship, it's multiple. And he wants the best chance at that. If we prove that's possible here, he'll stay. If not, he's gone. Simple.

How to prove that you ask? Win one before 2010. Unfortunately, that might be the pressure this team and franchise is under. Win it all or have the greatest thing to ever happen to them leave.
