Sources: Nuggets, Pistons working to finalize Iverson trade
ESPN.com

The Denver Nuggets are expected to trade Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess, Pistons team sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

The deal has not been finalized.

This would be the second time Iverson has been traded in two years. He was dealt by Philadelphia to Denver in December 2006, kicked out of Philly over irreconcilable differences as part of a package that brought Andre Miller to the 76ers.

Stephen A. Smith covers the NBA for ESPN.

I agree, the pundits on ESPN were talking about how AI gives them a consistent scoring threat, but IMO it takes way too much away with Chauncey leaving.

That's what I'm hoping for ... Nugget fire sale!

I don't think AI to the Pistons really helps them that much. AI is a great individual player, and Detroit is a team that relies on the team playing well as a whole. Doesn't seem like a good match, at least at first glance.

...and AI hasn't been very.......well, AI-like in 2+ seasons. There's something else to this deal that we're not seeing. No way does Detroit think they'll be better with AI. If AI could help Denver, what can he do for the Pistons?

AI is in the last year of his contract if I recall correctly. Could be a salary dump for them, and I believe Billups had just signed a multi-year deal.

Yeah ... just checked the details:

Chauncey Billups
Salary: $11,050,000 Years Remaining: 4

Allen Iverson
Salary: $20,840,625 Years Remaining: 1

In which case ... why would Denver do this? I guess 11 mil for Billups isn't TOO bad, but they already have a ton of money tied up long contracts. This seems more of a "now" move rather than a rebuilding move for them ... which could be bad news if we're hoping for a firesale.

i think they did it, because billups is a more george karl type guy.

i don't think detroit is as good as they were with billups, but they also get nice cap space next season. something the cavs should consider, because they'll have more competition in the market should they not find a suitor for wally.

but as far as on the court goes, we should win the central.

detroit won't defend as well in the backcourt, and as good as AI is, he can't hit big shots in big games like billups can.

i wonder if melo is next?

yea I think the pistons want to make a big splash via trade in febuary or next summer. I think the pistons needed to do something and billiups or rasheed were the likely candidates.

This is a good move by Detroit. Frees up cap room which is going to allow them to build around some of their youth...

In terms of this year, I don't think it's gonna help or hurt them too much either way. They are not in a desperation position like us, where the bar is VERY high.

Billups has lost a few more steps than AI has. An old AI still has a boatload of athleticism, and yes, he can still hit dagger shots. All the sudden Detroit is very athletic. Their rotation of AI, Amir Johnson, Rasheed, Rip, Prince, Stuckey and Maxiel looks pretty good on paper. The rumor being floated out their is that Denver is gonna buy out Dyess and Detroit will resign him later in the year...

AI has historically killed us (even last year in that Sunday nite ESPN game at the Q where Denver ran us outta the gym).. We will see what happens, but make no mistake about it, we are not gonna run away with this division by any means....

iverson isn't nearly as clutch as billups has been in his playoff history...

and also, i wonder if danny ferry will try and sneak in and maybe get mcdyess? if we can make an agreement with eric snow, i think that is possible, what a pickup he would be...

Playoff history doesn't mean much when you can't even make it through the playoffs like Chauncey last season. And if you do wanna talk playoff history, do you remember AI single handidly carrying that crappy Sixers team to the finals? Think of it like this, are you scared of Chauncey? If you are, you may be the only die hard Cavs fan I know that is at this point. Iverson is gonna bring a whole new dimension offensively that Billups could not. Billups wanted to back guys down (Boobie). AI is gonna go right around em, that's really the difference...

This is a good move by Detroit as much as I hate saying it. They just added a big spark to a roster that has played together a lot. Watch Iverson fit right in just fine. If you think about it, Rip and Tayshaun are off screen jump shooters, and sheed is either back to the basket or around the arc. Neither of those 3 really need the ball all that much to make their impact

chauncey still locks down on defense, he still hits big shots, and he's still the engine of that team, they will struggle.
