The Dallas Cowboys are close to a deal to acquire wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions, a source told ESPN.com Tuesday. The trade would involve multiple draft picks but would not involve the Cowboys' first-round pick.

The Cowboys are also trying to negotitate a long-term deal with Williams before completing the deal. Williams has expressed unhappiness playing for the winless Lions and can become a free agent after the season unless the team places the franchise tag on him.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes Williams is a game-breaker who provides an immediate boost to a faltering offense without quarterback Tony Romo and views him as a potential long-term solution as the eventual replacement for aging Terrell Owens, according to another high-ranking Cowboys source.

The source said the Cowboys are willing to make the deal, but the Lions seem hesitant because they are operating without a general manager. Former GM Matt Millen had discussed the possibility of trading Williams with the Cowboys frequently before he was fired.

The Lions had been demanding a first-round draft choice just to consider a deal. The Cowboys could offer a second- and third-round pick, since they have multiple choices in the third round.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen, attending the meeting of league owners, reported that the Cowboys' NFC East rivals the Philadelphia Eagles have also made inquiries about Williams' availability. However, Philadelphia is believed to be more interested in Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez. The New York Giants and Green Bay Packers are also pursuing a deal with the Chiefs.

However, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith on Tuesday that it appeared very unlikely Gonzalez would be traded.

In Dallas, Jones is known for a failed deal in which he traded two No. 1 draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver Joey Galloway in an attempt to provide Troy Aikman one more chance at the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys would like to find a way to avoid the two- to three-season span it seems to take to develop a young receiver for that role. But the Cowboys are concerned about how Owens would react to the addition of another prominent receiver and the possibility it would diminish his role rather than provide him occasional single coverage. The potential negative effect on the overall offensive chemistry is also a concern and some in the organization prefer to wait until the offseason to make such a move.

Either way, Jones definitely wants him and there have been very few times in his two decades of ownership that the Cowboys have failed to acquire a player Jones covets like he does Williams.

Wait until he finds out he's part of the deal and he's going to the Lions...

A second and third is a steep price for a guy they can acquire in the offseason for free.

No surprise that ESPN has the news, but has some of the facts wrong.

Dallas DID give up it's FIRST ROUNDER in 2009 plus some more.

IRVING, Texas - In a bold move to inject some Pro Bowl production into a battered offense, the Cowboys acquired Detroit Lions receiver Roy Williams just before the NFL's 3 p.m. (CDT) trade deadline.

The Lions will receive the Cowboys' 2009 first-round pick, a third-round pick and sixth-round pick. The Cowboys get Detroit's 2009 seventh-round pick in the Williams trade, plus Tennessee's 2009 fifth-round pick now that cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has been suspended at least four games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Williams, who has been involved in trade rumors for weeks, instantly provides a speed complement opposite Terrell Owens and a big target for backup quarterback Brad Johnson, who has been ushered into the starting lineup with Tony Romo (fractured right pinkie finger) expected to miss about a month.

Williams is scheduled to be a free agent after the season. The former University of Texas star has expressed a desire to return to his home state, and the winless Lions' decision to trade their best offensive player signals a directional shift under new management (longtime GM Matt Millen was fired two weeks ago).

Through the first six games, Williams has 17 catches for 232 yards and a touchdown. He will wear No. 11 for the Cowboys.

Wow, He's a really good player ..... but that's a whole lot to give up for a guy you theoretically could only have for another 11 games.

for the next 4 weeks, how are they gonna get the ball to him? and it will be at least 3 or 4 weeks before he gets the hang of thier offense,, I don't think this was a very smart move.

I've wondered that about the Cowboys for a while. How do they have all these marquee players and still slide under the salary cap?

I seem to remember that Jerry Jones signs guys to personal services contracts... At least that's what I think he did with Deion Sanders way back when.

If I remember correctly, it has no effect on the cap.

You sign a guy to a personal services contract. After his career comes to an end, the personal services money kicks in. He might receive that money over the next 25 years or so.

It's actually not a horrible deal considering the amount of dollars you are talking about..

But I'm almost positive that the league put a stop to that,

If they didn't, i would expect many other teams to do the same. Namely Snyder of the Redskins.

i just despise every move that team makes. their season is literally falling apart around them, and the best move they can make is a draft bust WR when they are thin at QB, corner, RB and many other places?

i'm glad i'm not a dallas fan...we have our problems, but at least we don't have jerry jones.

Say what you will about Jones,, the man bought the Cowboys in the late 80s and has since picked up 3 Lombardis... not bad for a guy that I don't care for.

Memory on the subject is very gray, but I seem to remember that the thing he did with Dion was really frowned upon by the league and thus outlawed by the NFL.

Personally, I don't find anything terribly wrong with it. It's pretty creative and let's face it, all of these owners are billionaires. If they want to spend thier money that way,, who are we to say they shouldn't.

You know, I wrote that and then walked away and realized, I'm wrong.

The reason for the salary cap is to keep things on an even keel. In other words, one owner can't buy a bunch of guys unless he can fit everything under the cap.

Yeah, all the owners are Billionaires.. Randy Lerner is said to be worth 4 to 5 billion. Dan Snyder is supposedly worth more than that. Jerry Jones is in that ballpark also.

But look at the Rooneys in Pittsburgh, or Ralph Wilson in Buffalo or the Browns in Cinci. They may have net worths in excess of a billion or two, but not nearly the amounts available to Randy Lerner, Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder to name a few.

So the playing field isn't even. Those three for instance could afford to pay throught the nose over the next 25 years for a winning team today. But that doesn't make it fair to teams that don't have those kinda dollars behind them..

So I retract my thoughts on it being ok to do that..

And as Sam Ritigliano said on the "Point After" show on STO, that man [Jones] falls in and out of love very quickly.
