I am younger fan so I did not realize until today (research haha) that Eric Metcalf was traded to the Falcons in the 1995 offseason. I always thought he was with the Browns until they moved.( one of fav players as kid)
Do any of you guys recall why Modell would trade away a player like Metcalf ? he might have made a huge difference in 95 with the addition of Rison.
Also I have read many articles stating that Chip Banks had the potential to be as good as LT when he was on his game so why did Modell trade him?
Also was Byners trade strictly based on the previous years ''fumble''?
Just curious about Modell's decision on these players

Future HOF coach Belichick couldn't figure how to utilize Metcalf's talents to help the team, and he was deemed expendable to basically draft Craig Powell who never played a down. When Metcalf was traded, he primarily played the role of a 3rd WR, which I agree might've been beneficial with Rison...but then again Rison was a completely different fiasco. Saw the guy enter the stadium at 12:15 for a 1pm game once.

Bellicheck drafted Powell?
For some reason I was thinking Marty did that when he kept drafting backers...but I admit I am to a point where it is easy to run the years and decades together....doing something 25-30 years ago sometimes feels like 4-5 years ago.

Not quite true. Metcalf was traded to Atlanta so that Belichick could draft Penn State TE Kyle Brady. Brady was selected by the New York Jets right before the Browns picked. In a panic, Belichik traded our pick to San Francisco for their first round pick in 1995, and 1996. San Francisco used our pick to draft JJ Stokes. We later selected Craig Powell. I remember it very well. I was in 11th grade and on the phone with my buddy as it played out.

He was at Ohio State in '94, so it wasn't Marty,...now, HE did draft the "Mad Dog in a Meat Market" waste of a LB Mike Junkin.

And Cliff Charlton...I was thinking Powell was one of the busts as well.
Like I said...things run together.

I have read may times that in pure talent Banks was considered better than LT. However, from what I remember a big reason he was traded is b/c not a lot of players got along with him, he never participated off-season team activities, and Marty thought he never played to the level he was capable of playing. Instead he featured Clay Matthews and Banks was traded for a draft pick that turned into Mike freakin Junkin

As I remember, Banks was also injury-nicked all the time.

Regarding Earnest Byner, he was not traded because of the fumble, but because of a meltdown in a playoff game (I believe) the following year vs Houston. He lost his temper and committed two personal fouls that were very costly - the Browns lost the game. He was also the target of PD columnist Bill Livingston, who rarely missed an opportunity to bash Byner following the fumble.
Here's a question for older fans ... why in the world did the Browns trade the ultimate open field runner, Bobby Mitchell, for a FB (Ernie Davis) that was a clone of Jim Brown, who was just entering his prime? I was very young, but have never figured that out. Even Jim Brown has said it wouldn't have worked out; that you couldn't have two studs in the same stable. I just wonder if there weren't plans afoot to trade big Jim ...

Pure spec on my part, but Ernie was a no brainer, being the younger, newer, Heisman Trophy winning, model. Mitchell and Brown were both "up in NFL years" at that point (62 ?)
The bigger question to me is, what did the Skins know about Davis that the Browns didn't. (Assuming that it is correct,...the Skins actually drafted Davis, then made the trade ??)

IIRC, Banks was a good friend of Don Rogers and took his death really hard. Never played to his potential after that.

I have my theories,...
Unless these 2 knew each other in high school (California ?) real well, this relationship would have had to "blossom" as combatants during their USC-UCLA years ?? and thereafter when both landed up in Cleveland. Makes you wonder what was really going on.
Anyway, the absolute worst trade -- well, most DEFLATING trade -- ever was that lonely, miserable announcement by our school bus driver that the Browns had dealt Paul Warfield to Miami,...if you ever needed some poor, despondent reason to skip school, that was it.

not that I don't believe you, but I'd love to find articles that said so. I'll take you at your word but I'd still love to see how Chip Banks would've compared to LT.

The only way Cip Banks could compare to LT was in how much Coke they could snort.
