Merriman to have season-ending surgery
Posted: September 9th, 2008 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: San Diego Chargers, Shawne Merriman

Shawne Merriman informed the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday that he has decided to have surgery on his knee and will miss the remainder of the 2008 season.

Merriman was attempting to play the season on two torn ligaments in his left knee. He revealed last month that he had tears in both the posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in the knee, but opted against reconstructive surgery despite the recommendations of four doctors.

“Shawne informed me he did not feel right (on the field) and thought it best to shut it down,” Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. “The road to winning the AFC West just got more difficult, but not impossible. Nothing is impossible. Shawne is a great player and an inspirational leader. He will be missed. We wish him a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.”

Merriman, 24, started and recorded one tackle in Sunday’s 26-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The Chargers are expected to place him on the Reserve-Injured list later this week. Second-year LB Jyles Tucker is expected to replace Merriman in the starting lineup. Here’s a look at the San Diego

Yeah, I was kind of surprised he even tried to make a go of it. I mean, 4-5 doctors all told him the same thing. Why take a chance like that when you're a relatively young guy? Good move.

No big surprise there. Good luck, Shawne.

Great. The Steelers don't have to face Tom Brady and now no Merriman.

Merriman, while a good player, is hardly the sole playmaker on that Defense. That whole unit is top notch ...

Glad to hear he's not going to risk a season to perhaps end a potential hall of fame career ending injury.

Good luck, Merriman!

It's been kind of big talk the last few weeks on Sports Talk radio here. Here's the kicker though ... he was told by doctors back in FEBRUARY to go get surgery. For some dumb reason, he decided to wait until training camp to get some more opinions on it, and they still said the same thing. Had he listened back a few months ago, he might of been ready to play at least the last half of the football season.

The kicker for me is how in the hell can an NFL team CLEAR a player to play with the KNOWLEDGE (from MULTIPLE doctors) that he needs surgery and has two torn ligaments???

Yep...Bet they'd have liked to have that roster spot available BEFORE final cutdowns...

Dumb move by Merriman AND the Chargers...

NO WAY IN HELL the dude was gonna last even half the year with that...

Well, he should maybe have had surgery in the first place nor neither of this would have happened, now would it? Being out for the whole year.

Sorry but I have to do this...I wish we had the unfortunate circumstance of seeing Merriman out for the season and nothing against Wimbley but I think all must agree Merriman is the type of LB we needed to build our 3-4 around.

Then in 06 we could have traded down a little more than one spot and got Demeco Ryans (Somebody I know Savage was hot on)...with the extra picks I'm sure we could have picked up a solid WR like Jennings or more than one.... ::sigh:: to do that all over again. And on top of that we would have kept Faine...which would have solved a lot of chaos regarding the Center position from our disaster in August (Bentley).

Sorry for the back tracking but I've kept silent about Merriman for a while I apologize for my rant. But you all must admit, he was the perfect LB to build a 3-4 D around... Ce' la vie. And my last rant of reflection on this subject but had to let it out for my sanity...lol

Rhetorical question, Shep?

You know how. You know EXACTLY how, hehe.

One has to wonder just what role his steroid use played in the wear and tear of his knee. He got way too big way too fast before the combine, got busted in the NFL, and is now hurt without taking a specific blow.

If it walks like a duck........

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

I'm guessing he won't heal as fast, either........
