Peek leaves practice with injury to knee Thursday, September 04, 2008 Mary Kay CabotPlain Dealer Reporter Browns linebacker Antwan Peek left Wednesday's practice with an apparent knee injury and did not return, a source told The Plain Dealer. The extent of the injury was not known Wednesday night. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/1220517024148250.xml&coll=2Peek had just returned to practice Monday after undergoing arthroscopic surgery July 31 to remove loose cartilage from his right knee. He was hoping to be available for Sunday's opener against the Cowboys. Peek also underwent a scope in the off-season to repair a torn meniscus suffered in the opener against Pittsburgh last season. He had his choice to have surgery during the season or wait it out, and he chose the latter. He said he learned from that mistake and had the scope as soon as possible this time to be ready for the opener. It was not yet known if Wednesday's incident was a reinjury or something unrelated. Lewis practices: Running back Jamal Lewis returned to practice for the first time since pulling a hamstring in the Giants preseason game more than two weeks ago and hopes to be ready for the Cowboys. He was limited, but moved well during the open first-half hour of practice. "Nothing heals a muscle but time and rest," Lewis said before practice."I've had a lot of [both]. Hopefully, it feels good when I go out there and put it to the test." Injury encyclopedia: The Browns had 17 players on their first official injury report Wednesday compared with six for the Cowboys. Seven Browns were limited, including six key players: Beau Bell (knee), Josh Cribbs (ankle), Sean Jones (knee), Lewis (hamstring), Peek (knee), Brodney Pool (concussion) and Ryan Tucker (hip). Seven players participated fully, including four starters. The starters were Derek Anderson, Braylon Edwards (ankle) and Willie McGinest (groin). The others were Darnell Dinkins (hip), Steve Heiden (back), Leon Williams (neck) and Syndric Steptoe (shoulder). Three players did not participate: Kris Griffin (elbow), starting right guard Rex Hadnot (knee) and Martin Rucker. Cribbs did individual work with the receivers, more than just the special teams walk-through he participated in on Monday. Pool also practiced for the first time since suffering a concussion vs. the Giants. Team captains: Browns players voted on the following as captains for the season: McGinest and Andra Davis on defense, Anderson and Hank Fraley on offense and Phil Dawson and Cribbs on special teams.

I have a distinct feeling that if Hall is able to step up soon, Peek will be gone or relegated to spot duty.
I feel for the guy because I think he could do some damage for us. But, you don't do us any good on the sideline (see Courtney Brown).

File this under the "you've got to be freaking kidding me" file. Unreal.
Alex Hall, be ready. Although honestly, it might be a blessing in disguise because I think Hall can do some damage. I just hope Willie doesn't get banged up further and that Peek can come back.
If we lose Willie we'll be hurting cuz he's valuable on run downs.

Ammo,, you know what, you may be right.. I mean this is going to force feed Alex Hall.. Baptism by fire as they say.
If the kid is as good as he appeared in Preseason.. if that promise turns into reality,, we could be way way better off in the long run.
Still, I wish Peek well..

Because people on the defense respect him and look up to him. He's a captain for his leadership skills, not his play making abilities.

It sounds crazy because he's a 7th rounder from a D2 school and is raw as all hell, but stranger things have happened.
Also, it's not like Joe Flacco learning to play the QB position. I don't expect Hall in on run downs, and as a passrusher you have one main duty: get to that QB (yes I know the draw play is a factor too but bear with me, the main point is if he's not playing on run downs he doesn't have as much responsibility as he normally would, although it makes it obvious who's rushing),

Moving on...as much as I love Peek, this guys need to be cut or hit the IR. Too many injuries to keep him on the 53 right now.

Some guys just can't stay healthy. I find this strange that certain players are always injured. What is it about their joints, bones, tendons, ligaments that are different from others? Or is it their gate ... is their added pressure on these points? I'm just confused by this. Of course, it could just be bad luck, but I don't think this is any coincidence. Something is going on with this guy's body.
Has Orr signed with anyone yet? Move Peek to IR, bring back Orr.

Well, if you think about it, why should we hold a roster spot for a guy who can't stay healthy?
Now, a lot of this depends on how severe the injury is. If he just tweaked it and will be ready for week 2 or 3, you keep him around. But, if he's going to be missing substantial time, why have him keep a spot?

Sheesh... the guy can't buy a break! I hope Savage has Orr on speed dial. We will need him if Peek is going to miss more time. In fact, as much as I'd hate to see it, it may be time to unload him for someone who can stay healthy.

Exactly, we have no idea the extent of the injury and someone is calling for him to be cut... It's just too early.

As we all do, arguing over who got/gets to stay on the roster only reinforces my opinion that these rosters are just not big enough.
It isn't like the NFL can't afford to pay salaries. Or that the talent level would become "watered-down." Or that we would stop watching.
It is what it is,...McGinest playing with a bad groin. Hello,...!!!

I still don't understand the reason to cut Orr. The guy had tons of value.
Now it looks like that decision may come back to bite us.

I'm not totally sure why McGinest and Ken Dorsey are still on the roster. Great guys, but one can barely play and the other really sucks. Two roster spots we could use right now.
If they're that good in the lockerroom, make 'em coaches.

Can't miss what we have never had, and we've never had the real Antwan Peek. Time to cut bait with this guy, he just can't stay healthy.

I've always thought that Dorsey should just start coaching already. Make Cribbs the emergency QB. If a QB goes down we can sign somebody in the following week. Just does not make sense to use a roseter spot for him.

Well, you are minimizing the effect of them in the locker room..
I'm not sure making them coaches has the same overall effect as them being players that lead and teach. Willie can still play some,, no where near his past, but he still has a little in the tank. And to just flatly say that Dorsey can't play is probably a little unfair, look at who was on the field with him when he had a chance to get in a game.

That's a well thought out analysis; really. But the bottom line is in the judgement of performance.
Either the rosters are just not big enough, or,the "judges" aren't performing.

I can't see any reason to cut Orr other than Peek was coming back. That's the only rationale I can think was discussed as it pertains to Orr when deciding the cuts. It was a numbers thing. Although I still think they should have found a way to keep both.
Landscape has now changed. Get him back here. Not to mention Griffin probably won't play Game 1 either. Could use Orr on special teams.

Browns linebacker Antwan Peek suffered a torn patella tendon in his knee during Wednesday's practice and is out for the season.
Browns coach Romeo Crennel said the injury occurred on a "freak" play during practice and that Peek was having surgery to repair the tendon Thursday morning.
Peek will be placed on injured-reserve. The Browns plan to re-sign Shantee Orr, who was released last weekend, to replace Peek.
Crennel said the team hopes to have Orr signed in time for him to participate in Thursday's practice. He said both Orr and rookie Alex Hall will play in Sunday's season opener against the Cowboys.
Peek had 4 sacks last year, his first with the Browns.

I have a feeling he'll be on IR soon. The guys is constantly getting banged up. Even if the injury is minor, something else will happen.
With the amount of injuries surmounting, we can't afford to wait on guys and see if they return to health.

I feel for him. I have a feeling his career is probably done.
I made a post earlier in the thread, and I'm still wondering this ... what is it about some guys where they just can't stay healthy? Is there some type of medical explanation for this? It can't be a coincidence that everytime players like Brown and Peek set foot on the field that they were hurt.

There is a explanation for it..although for most I don't know what it is.. Courtney's body was too built and cut(from weights) to take the physical pounding..he had very little body fat and it just seemed to strain him too much..always some type of musle tear..he clearly overworked his body.. Peek..I don't know..

I'm surprised that Phil has not contacted Roosevelt Colvin who got released from the Texans. I know he did not work out in the texans plan but we are so thin at outside LB, plus he should know some of Crennel's schemes already!
