I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe two teams play and the other gets a bye. The winner of the first game then plays the third team for the playoff spot. I'm not sure how they figure out who gets the bye...

I just did some more research on the Tribe/Sox/Twins,...

It looks, to me, that the Tribe is totally mathematically out,...

In order to finish in a tie with the Sox, Chicago must lose 3 to the Twins,...if the Twins win those 3, they will have 86 wins. The MOST the Tribe can have is 85.

I do not believe the Tribe EL even exists,....it is DONE.

Game Over, No ???

I know it's been said before, but my hats off to the players & coaching staff, we could have packet it in long ago, but the players are playing hard and we will have something if nothing else a good start on next year.

My only fear is that this late push will allow Shapiro and Co. to say we only need minor additions (ala last years playoff run).

We need a stud in the bullpen, a power bat and a true leadoff hitter so we can drop Grady in to the 3 hole. Anything else would be icing.

If we can split these last 6 games we'll finish 81-79. Which would be quite a feat considering where we were when we traded C.C.

I agree, but I do believe Shapiro knows our bullpen stunk and will go after a legit closer, Lewis has done a great job, but he is only a back up for now, not the legit closer we need. But again who will be out thier worth the money they will be asking..closing wise?

As for a power bat, it all boils down to what they think of Hafner, I do believe our outfield with Choo - grady - Francisco - Franklin may not produce a 40 HR hitter but between the four produce 100 hr, and that is really somewhat above average for 4 outfielders, I dont expect another HR season from Grady like he's had this year, but would take it....

we do need a true lead-off hitter and I do believe we may be waiting for one to emerge from our minor leauge teams. I dont remember his name but remember them talking about someone, I wanna say Crowe but that dosent sound right,

I think shapiro will make the nessary bullpen moves this off season, he has to he saw what happens when he dosent.

My 85 year old Mom was visiting this evening and asked what I was laughing at. I told her 2 baseball players were fighting.

She looked at it and said she sees more contact with the geezers pushing to get to the mailman's deliveries everyday at 1 o'clock.

Tribe is up 4-2 in the 7th at Boston. Got to give them credit. They didn't throw in the towel when they were 16 games below .500.

Just read that Carmona got a 6 game suspension and Sheffield only got 4. How did that happen? That pitch was not intentional at all.

What a load of crap...the only thing I can think of is that it makes sure Carmona doesn't pitch at least once (5 man pitching rotation). Only a guess...

Because it's a pitcher versus a hitter ... Carmona will just get a start bumped back 3 days, while Sheffield will actually miss 4 games.

That said, Carmona didn't do a whole lot. What's he supposed to do? Let Sheff sissy slap him around? When Nolan Ryan did the same thing, he didn't even get ejected.

Whast really stinks, is that when we got a good run going, and it looked like we might actually be in contention again, we'd get swept by the Mariners or lose a series to the Royals of all teams.

Sheffield's hitting about .210 so we're actually helping the Tigers on that one...

Yeah, it stinks they didn't wake up until late August/September,...but the fun now is, while the Twins play the White Sox and the Tribe sweeps Boston, the Central could get the WC if the Tribe lays down vs. Chicago (post Boston). The Red Sox can't win the East if they don't win a game vs. Cleveland (or something close thereto).

Hey,...it gives me something to pay attention to while the Browns swirl down the toilet.

I wonder what happened to the posters who were crying that we would have won the division if we would have thrown millions of dollars at free agents like Detroit did. I remember people saying Detroit would run away from us because we were to cheap to waste money. *Looking down at the Tigers in the standings* HMMMMM I don't see no Tigers above us

I ain't about free agency either,...would have been nice to have kept CC and Blake though.

Alas, even Cliff couldn't stop the Red Sox last night. That eliminated the Yankees, and a possible Central 2-team show.

Pulling for the Twins now,....

Uh ..C what?? We were pretty much out of the hunt from May. We traded two guys who were going to be free agents at the end of the year, and got SOMETHING in return. These two will still be free agents at the end of the year, and last I checked, We can STILL sign them! So if they don't agree to the contract we offer them this winter ... we would of lost them anyway. At least in this case, we get minor league prospects back in return.

And I think it's kind of funny that there are people who are mad that we traded Blake. People wanted to dump him/trade him faster than Derek Anderson for YEARS, before he had a decent season this year.

I remember reading if the Brewers make the playoffs we get to pick from a list of prospects (I could be wrong). How cool would it be to get what we have, another good player, AND CC back? I really don't think he comes back but that would be too cool.

I'm not MAD that we traded Blake, just disappointed that it follows the same old Indian history; the guy becomes a decent, servicable starter, so let's trade him (I understand the free agent "circumstances",...). As far as I can see "SOMETHING" was, they got to start Marte at 3, and that is not all a bad thing. Hopefully he comes around big time, and nails down third for 10 years.

I don't think getting CC back is all that far-fetched, but I doubt it happens.

Boy I hope the Brewers make the playoffs. Nice walk off grand slam last night by Fielder. Anyone know who the four players are? My best guess are:

I'd like to see him stay right where he's at. At this point he is the only pitcher that can seem to get a win on the team. I don't think there is any way that will happen but I didn't think he would be pitching for the Brewers now either.

Still one game back and I can't believe I have to cheer for the Cubs

Cleveland Indians' Jhonny Peralta cool to hot corner debut

Friday, September 26, 2008

Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

Boston- Shortstop Jhonny Peralta, following Andy Marte's calf injury, is scheduled to make his big-league debut at third base tonight at U.S. Cellular Field against Chicago.

The question is, will it become Peralta's permanent position next year?

"Wedgie [manager Eric Wedge] told me I'd be playing third base Friday," said Peralta, "but he didn't say anything about next year. I want to play shortstop forever, but it's their decision."

Marte's poor performance at third base following the trade of Casey Blake in July, moreso than Tuesday's calf injury, has created a need at third. If the Indians can obtain a second baseman in the off-season - it doesn't seem likely that they'll give the job to Josh Barfield - it would allow them to move Asdrubal Cabrera to short and Peralta to third.

"I can play third base," said Peralta. "I played a half season there at Buffalo. I don't know how I'll do there [today], but I'll do my best."

Jamey Carroll played third Wednesday and Thursday following Marte's injury.

Peralta went into Thursday's game hitting .276 (162-for-588) with 42 doubles, 22 homers and 87 RBI. The 42 doubles and 87 RBI are career highs. He's one of 12 shortstops in history to hit more than 40 doubles and 20 homers in one season.

The final regular-season series at The Cell will be critical to the White Sox winning the AL Central. They entered Thursday's game against the Twins with a half-game lead.

"We need to play hard this weekend," said Peralta. "It would be nice if we could do the same thing they did to us in 2005."

The White Sox, on the last weekend of the 2005 season, swept the Indians at Progressive Field to knock them out of the postseason.

Suspension news:

Fausto Carmona and Victor Martinez each had their suspensions reduced by one game after their appeals were heard. Carmona's suspension went from six to five games, and Martinez went from three to two games.

They started serving their suspensions Thursday. Carmona's suspension will carry into the 2009 season-opener, while Martinez will play Saturday. Cabrera's three-game suspension ended Thursday.

"I'm happy that they each had a game taken off," said Wedge. "Fausto will be able to pitch the second game next season. I'm pretty sure Cliff Lee has the lead game sewn up."

The Indians open next season April 6 against Texas at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Carmona, Martinez and Cabrera were suspended for their part in a fight with the Tigers on Sept. 19.

Shortfall:

Dennis Lehman, Indians executive vice president of business, said the shortfall in attendance this season will not affect what General Manager Mark Shapiro can spend this winter to improve the team.

The Indians projected attendance at the start of the season was 2.5 million. They drew 2,169,760, a shortfall of 330,240. It cost the Indians an estimated $6 million in ticket revenue.

"We adjusted fairly early in the season," said Lehman. "We did what we needed to do."

Lehman said the Indians cut back on "manpower" at Progressive Field to absorb the losses.

Just in case:

If Lee doesn't start Sunday's season finale, Bryan Bullington will replace him.

"That why we kept him at five innings and 60 pitches on Wednesday," said Wedge.

Lee is dealing with a stiff neck and a career high in innings pitched. Wedge said if Sunday's game isn't critical to the AL Central race, the AL Cy Young Award favorite might not start.

Bullington relieved Carmona in the second inning Wednesday and threw five scoreless innings.

Finally:

Asked what he expected of Travis Hafner next year, Wedge said, "I expect him to be a championship middle-of-the-order bat. I think that's what he is and that's what we expect him to be."
