I was watching Family Night last Friday, and they interviewed Winslow. They said something to him about playing defense, and it jogged my memory.
Of course I'll always remember Winslow playing special teams on the onside kick team. That's how the injuries all started.
But does everyone remember he used to play on the kick/punt block team?
I remember how the coaching staff raved about his athleticism, and we tried using it to our advantage by putting him in their to block punts. I was all excited, thinking he's going to make an impact. The first game of his career, the season opener against the Ravens, he came close to blocking one punt, then was held on another in which he appeared close to getting to the punter. At the time, I thought it was brilliant.
Then it all unraveled the next week in Dallas. I'm sure I don't need to go into details about that. It ended up being detrimental putting Winslow out there, as he broke his leg.
Then it got me thinking, is the reverse true about Cribbs?
Should we stick to just having him play special teams and as a "slash" type of player? Or should we work him in as a #3 or #4 wideout? Sometimes I think we should just keep him doing what he does best instead of sticking him out there for other things.
I like the idea of Josh lining up behind the center, or taking reverses and other forms of trickery, but not sure at this point how I feel about him playing a lot of receiver. At the same time, I don't want him in on offense just for gadget plays, because the D will always know that if Cribbs is in, they're running some trick play- either this, this, this or this.
What to do you all feel about him cracking the lineup more as a wideout?

From what I can gather, there are about 5 or 6 other guys on the team who are better wideouts then him - some of them who might not even make the team.
If that's truly the case, then he's not really helping us much as a WR, IMO. Plus, I think he is too valuable to special teams to chance something when he doesn't necessarily possess that skill set - just because we want to put the ball in his hands.
What's the incremental value of him playing wideout vs. the decremental value of having extra chances to get hurt or tired to play his primary role? To me, that's a simple equation to solve.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I remember. I wish we got to see the Winslow, at this time of his career, without the injuries. He woould be coming into this season as a 3 time Pro Bowler.
In Miami, he was a beast on specail teams. He was the second guy back on punt return, and his job was to level the first guy down the field. When the QB threw an int., he was the guy who made the tackle. I dont even like Miami, but I would watch them just because Winslow was a one man show of a football player.

I think he could be one of the better safeties in the league.

That was why I was so excited to see him on special teams. I thought, man, this guy can do it all. Figured he'd block a punt sooner or later......guess I was wrong. Last time we played Dallas was that fateful game in 2004. As much as I'd love to see Cribbs doing different things, I'd hate to risk injury in order to save him for what he does best.

I wouldn't say that's how they all started. It sounds like you are relating that to his motorcycle injury which are 2 completely separate incidents. If I misunderstood you, my apologies.
What made me nervous, however, (and was never really talked about) was when Winslow went surfing in Hawaii during the Pro Bowl week. Watching that video I was thinking to myself..."oh no.....not again."

Yeah, the two injuries were unrelated. Just meant that when we broke his leg/ankle and screwed up some ligaments, it went downhill after that. Then during the offseason, there was the motorcycle accident.
I can't imagine how good he could be right now had that never happened. Oh well, what can you do...

Yep. Even after the first injury, I believe he would have been fine eventually if not for the motor cycle accident. Ok....next topic....I'm getting depressed.

If it makes you feel better I do think he would have been a dominant player and would be unquestionably the best TE in the league. Without the injuries I can see him being a huge factor, changing the outcome of games.
Had that happened we would have been a different team. We would not have Edwards and Thomas for sure had we won a couple more games those two seasons. And when you think of it that way....maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

I said the same thing to a Steelers buddy who was raggen on me about the accident. Its not like the players the Browns had at the time were going to the Super Bowl, with or without him. At least I was hopen he could make a comeback and the Browns would get some better draft picks out of it.Plus, Savage got an extra year out out of him in the long run.
He was a differance maker just being on the field during his rookie season. When Garcia ran in a TD against Baltimore in week one. He rolled out to Winslow, who was covered by 3 people, and had a wide open field in front of him. He was also wide open in those couple games he played during his rookie season. Garcia just couldnt get the ball to him. Hes strictly a WCO QB that Butch tried to turn into a dropback system. Kind of like Frye.

To take that one step further ... would he even be the same person if the accident never happened? Would he have been a cancer in the locker room? Would he have bolted town the first chance he got? I think these would have been real possibilities.
I'm saddened that we really will never get to see him at full strength yet sometimes I also believe maybe it was a blessing in disguise. If he can give us 5 more years like last year, I will probably definitely feel that way.
I wonder if 5 more years is too much to ask for. I hope not. One thing I do believe, though, is that if anyone can do it, it's him.

It was a freak thing...stuff happens...KW2 breaking his leg.
What a freakin Athlete. As good as he is now he is a mere image of what he could have been. The only good the Cycle accident did was maybe build his character a bit...the rest all bad! If I can turn the clock back on anything it wouldn't be using him on ST in 04 it would be to prevent that Cycle accident!
I remember he was volunteering to be our DE on Defense to rush the passer and play both ways...and we were even considering it!
hehehe...100% knees I wouldn't mind seeing him in opposite of Wimbley...but as I said just a mere image of what he could have been.
ST - in 04, the kid wasn't our starting TE (Heiden still was) but without a doubt our best athlete. Not a bad move by our Butch.
