Coach Will Continue To Teach At School

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- The head coach of the St. Edward High School football team has been relieved of his coaching duties, school officials said Friday.

According to a news release from the school, John Gibbons is still teaching at the school through the end of the school year, and has been offered a renewal of his teaching contract for the 2007-2008 school year.

Gibbons, who headed the school's football program for eight years, came under fire in November for an alleged verbal exchange with a player following a playoff game.

He was placed on administrative leave while the school conducted an investigation but returned to the job in late November.

Principal Eugene Boyer said the search for a new head coach will begin as soon as search and selection committees are formed.

He was my senior year coach, a good football coach for sure. I heard that the players were complaining about the play calling, and he basically choked one of them and called him so not so nice names. He may have spat on one of the players, not sure though.

Player complains about play calling, coach says you're on the feild you make the plays happen. Player mouths off, coach throw a hissy fit.

Good man, poor judgement, you can't let a high school kid get to you like that John.

One thing is for sure, this will hurt the St. Eds program for years to come.

From what I've also heard through the grapevine - Gibbons and either the AD or Principal aren't exactly chums by any means.
