Peek gets knee scope Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 07.31.2008 The Browns made it through the first week of training camp with just bumps and bruises. Now, their first significant injury of camp has affected a key player at a key position. Antwan Peek had arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday morning. Romeo Crennel didn't offer an exact timetable for Peek's recovery but did say Peek hopes to be back for the Sept. 7 season opener against the Cowboys, a little over five weeks away. "He'll start his rehab, and hopefully he'll be back with us for the Dallas game," Crennel said. "All I know is he works hard to get back. He'll do everything he can." Though Peek is a technically second-teamer, listed behind starting left outside linebacker Willie McGinest, he's one of the Browns' best overall athletes and pass rushers. His 4 sacks last season tied him for the second-highest total on the team. For now, the door is open for some of the Browns' younger players to take advantage of extra reps. Crennel said seventh-round rookie Alex Hall may take some reps on the left side, and David McMillan should also get some extra chances. "We're going to have to have some flexibility with the guys we have," Crennel said. "And Willie can still rush. A lot of people think he can't, but he'll surprise some people." Another player who may figure in the outside linebacker mix is Shantee Orr, a versatile veteran who was signed in free agency to replace versatile veteran linebacker Chaun Thompson when Thompson left for Houston. Orr played mostly inside linebacker for the first week of camp but took some reps outside Thursday. Orr has 10.5 career sacks and five seasons of NFL experience, including experience in the 3-4 defense. "(Orr) shows up every day," Crennel said. "He's always making a play, doing something. He's shown up rushing the passer some, he's shown up inside some and he's also shown us some things as an outside linebacker." Peek played in 14 games and made four starts last year. He was slowed early in the year by an ankle injury and also missed two of the last three games. When he's healthy, he gives the Browns a boost both in terms of depth and overall athleticism. MORE INJURY UPDATES - Crennel said Gary Baxter has experienced some soreness in his knees that's kept him out of the last two practices, but Crennel said he expects Baxter back on the field "maybe tomorrow, maybe Sunday." Tomorrow, of course, is the Browns' Family Night practice at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Among the players expected to watch from the sidelines are Corey Williams (shoulder), Kevin Kasper (hamstring), Lawrence Vickers (hamstring), Steve Heiden (knee) and Seth McKinney (ankle). Crennel said Heiden "is making good progress." Kasper was back on the practice field Thursday but wasn't participating in team drills. http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=8625

I wouldn't call him a key player.
He wasn't going to do much for us this year.
It wouldn't bother me to work out a injury settlement and move on.

I was going to say, this guy seems to be injured a lot. Hopefully this isn't too major and he can get back to us soon.
And what's the story with Corey Williams?

He's been out for a while. Nothing much has been discussed with him.......not sure.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering about. He's been out a while and I haven't seen too much on him. Is this something we should be concerned about?

Considering he's the primary backup to our nearly 40 year old OLB WM I would say he's a key player. If Peak goes down we have a 7th round rookie to take his place.........and if/when Willie goes down he would be your starter.........pretty big deal imo.

I agree, it's time to replace the often injury Peek. Too bad he can't stay healthy.

I disagree, but we usually do.
He's done nothing. He sucks for all you know.

an injury settlement for a scope, PEEN?...why?...guys have them all the time...while Peek is beginning to move past unluckyville into fragiletown, he had some promise as our #2 OLB...no reason to give up on him...and especially not with an old man and a late-round rook as the only guys left...
Browns fans are born with it...

He actually had 3 or 4 sacks last year Peen as a backup........not to shabby for his 1st year moving into that position. Furthermore, there is a thing called depth, and he is decent depth.........much better than a 7th round rookie. Not every key player is a starter.

You may not call him a Key Player, but I think the Browns were and still are counting on him... Did someone take a wee wee in your cheerios or something peen.. seems as if lately, a player gets a hangnail, and you are ready to show them the door

Wow, it seems like you're pretty quick to shift the roster these days. He'd definitely be good to have on 3rd and long.

I honestly thought Peek was a solid player last year and thought we would have seen more from him if he wasn't slowed up by the injury bug. It doesn't sound like a huge deal but more of the same little annoying injuries with him.
I too am interested in seeing more of what Hall can bring to the team.

With all the talk about Hall and Orr impressing in camp, I wonder if this "scope" is happening now because of that. I haven't heard any details on Peeks knee and wonder if this could've waited till the end of the season if Crennel didn't really feel good about that position.

I dissagree, Peek's big problem might have been magnified by the injury, but the fact is he isn't a very disciplined player and he takes himself out of the play so that he gets killed on running plays. The fact that he can't stop the run might have been made a bigger issue becauuse of injuries, but you can still tell that his run defense is a major liability.
Knee scope or not, He sucks against the run: Pure pass rusher period.

I really wanted to see what a healthy Peek could do- hopefully this will heal quickly with no infection and he'll be good to go for the regular season.

You're not the only person that thinks that. I thought the same with McKinney last year... suffering an injury and then Tucker comes in assumes the RG position permanently. I think sometimes the coaches might use injuries, real or not, to allow players to gracefully (atleast in the public eye)lose their starting position to another.

Basically summed up my thoughts.
I figured last year Peek would benefit from Wimbley's attention received, but his ankle injury prevented that. (and I truly believe he would have been much better if healthy since being a half step slow turns an average rusher into junk)
This year with Williams rushing from his side I was expecting an 8+ sack year from him. Now? Not so sure.
I wanna see this Hall kid in the preseason. I'll watch him closely...I won't compare a late round pick to a first rounder in Wimbley, but it was apparent early that Wimbley could get to the QB. We'll see how this kid does.

Peek didn't have an ankle injury. It was a knee injury, a torn meniscus. The meniscus is the cartilage between the two leg bones, femur and tibula. He's having the scope done to clean up some lose cartilage in the knee, probably because of the injury and the surgery to repair the torn meniscus. It's nothing serious. It just was causing him discomfort in his knee. He'll be back up and running full speed in a couple of weeks.

Just clicking... Actually Peek was very big in our plans as our best SOLB pass rush was too come from him. We got Wimbley, we ASSume we have the pocket now collapsing in Rogers and his two DE's, that left the Strongside Edge and Peek was to be the answer as he was back from nagging injuries that slowed him down.
Now we have him getting a scope...4-6 weeks he's out.
McMillan? Why would he make any impact now his 4th season?
McG? Maybe on a given play but I was hoping we could save his legs for the Postseason as much as possible...he's got so many Pass rushes left.
Shantee Orr...Edge rusher extraordinaire??? I think not. Those guys aren't left out there as gifts.
This leaves Hall...hopefully he's our Lou Gehrig and Peek is Wally Pipp.
