Sources: Giants to trade Shockey to Saintsby Jay Glazer
Jay Glazer is a Senior NFL Writer for FOXSports.com on MSN and also appears every week on FOX NFL Sunday as the network's NFL Insider.

Updated: July 21, 2008, 1:13 PM EST Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.

The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source. Shockey must also pass a physical.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

The emergence of rookie Kevin Boss during the Giants' improbable Super Bowl run — a stretch Shockey missed due to a broken leg — made Shockey expendable. Boss started six games after Shockey's injury (two regular season and all four during the Giants' postseason run), making nine catches for 140 yards and a TD.

Shockey's attitude made the move somewhat necessary as the Giants sought to avoid distractions from their bid to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

During the team's recent minicamp, Shockey reportedly engaged in a shouting match with GM Jerry Reese, just the latest controversy involving the outspoken former first-round pick out of the University of Miami.

Shockey's absence in Phoenix during the Super Bowl was conspicuous to say the least. According to some reports, one of the many sources of Shockey's displeasure with the team was that he was not allowed to stand on the team's sidelines during the game.

In the past, Shockey also had less-than-complimentary things to say about his quarterback, Eli Manning. In fact, many have theorized that Manning's transformation from a middle-of-the-pack quarterback to a Super Bowl MVP was facilitated by Shockey's absence.

I never liked Shockey at all, not one bit. But, the guy plays hard and is a good player. The Saints are getting a good deal.

The Giants are losing a good TE, but I think they're more than happy to lose this guy.

I agree with you 100% Addition by subtraction. Boss really turned some heads last year. Looks to be a good TE for a long time now.

Probably a good pick up for the Saints if he can stay healthy......I'm sure Brees will be happy with another target to throw to.

I bet the Giants are ending up saving a pretty penny when comparing Shockeys contract to Boss's contract.

If Shockey and Deuce can stay healthy, the Saints offense could make some real noise in the NFC. Hopefully Bush can start earning his keep around there too.

Made some decent moves on the defensive side of the ball too. This should be a real solid team.

Funny I remember when he was supposed to be the best TE ever when drafted. Never saw such a big deal made about a TE, until Winslow that is

I have never been a big Shockey fan but he is significantly better than anything the Saints have had in the past few years. He averages in the neighborhood of 700 yards and 4-5 TD's per year. He should help move the ball and but them in place for scoring points.

yes, good move by both teams. Shockey was a distraction to the giants and would have only created more problems this year. Brees is probably really happy right now.

But here is my thought:
This leaves the giants a bit thin at TE now. Dinkins is expendable to the browns. Do the giants have any corners???

What the hell happened to the saints? I predicted them to make some serious noise in the playoffs. Reggie Bush has been a bust so far. Houston looks really smart right now. Its its funny because I thought there gm was the biggest idiot on the face of the earth for passing on bush. Gues thats why hes earning millions and im not.

just clicking...

As I read this, it occurred to me that although they are very alike they are also very different ... Winslow and Shockey. Winslow seems to have respect for people and the game, and I just couldn't see him yelling at our GM or coach, even if he hadn't been humbled by the accident. Maybe I'm just wearing Browns colored glasses...

Don't know why I thought of that ... but anyway ...

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I'm not sure I'm ready to call Bush a bust. IMO, he's just the type of player that you have to put in only certain types of situations. I don't see him ever being the kind of back that you can run 25-30 times a game up the middle and expect to get big yards.

He's a receiving back and a back who can get yards around the end. If Deuce is healthy, the backfield of Bush/McAllister is pretty dangerous, IMO.

As for Shockey, I do think he's a good player, and I think he will help that offense. With him and Colston and Bush out of the backfield, Brees should be able to do pretty darn well (if he gets protection).

But, like I said, I never liked Shockey and I probably never will. That doesn't mean he isn't a good player, though.

Here's an article I saw about the trade:

Giants may regret dealing Shockey
By John Czarnecki

The best thing about Jeremy Shockey is that he plays with emotion. The worst thing about him is that he can be too emotional. And that's why he is now Drew Brees' headache and no longer Eli Manning's.

Shockey was never able to get over the Giants winning the Super Bowl without him. It also bugged him that New York's management demanded that he sit in the team's luxury box rather than allowing him to stand on the field with his teammates in Phoenix last February. Call it a Super Bowl funk, and that was the state of Shockey's mind this offseason. And that's why he was traded to the Saints, the one team that always wanted him and finally met New York's demands.

On the field, statistically, Shockey's best season was his rookie year, six seasons ago, when he caught 74 passes for 894 yards. Since then — at least in my mind — he dropped as many big catches as he made. He had one 100-yard receiving game last season, in a 31-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He had just three touchdowns catches; in comparison, Chris Cooley had eight for the Washington Redskins.

The two best tight ends in football right now are Jason Witten of the Cowboys and Kellen Winslow of the Browns, with All-Pro Antonio Gates of San Diego right behind them. Eli's brother, Peyton, would tell you that Dallas Clark, who had 11 touchdown catches last season, is more reliable than Shockey and runs infinitely better routes.

Shockey's typical game-day histrionics had become an emotional drain on both the Giants' offense and Manning, especially when the passing game wasn't working. When he was upset, Shockey would slam the ball to the ground and point back to the huddle about where Eli should have thrown the ball. Some interpret those Shockey actions as one of a super competitor; others can say he was being selfish and taking away from his teammates. How many times did it take a teammate or a coach to calm Shockey down when he became upset on the field?

No one can debate Shockey's enthusiasm and overall effort. He generally refused to work out with his teammates in the off-season, but he generally was in very good shape at the start of training camp doing it his way.

Off the field, Shockey was known for a predilection for a good time. But on the field, most of his teammates knew that he always had their back. If he played baseball, Shockey would be the first on the field to defend a teammate in a fight; he's that kind of man.

Despite his outbursts, the Giants would have better off with both Shockey and second-year player Kevin Boss this season. Yes, Boss had that big 45-yard catch against the Patriots and he looks like he can be a special player.

And, unlike Shockey, the big kid from Western Oregon really likes blocking, a prerequisite in the New York running game. But when you're attempting to defend a championship, it's better to have as much talent as possible. Two is always better than one.

And what happens if Boss doesn't develop into the player the Giants expect him to be? What if Boss gets hurt?

Behind Boss, the Giants have two young players who haven't played. Michael Matthews is 6-4 and 270 and can block while Darcy Johnson reportedly can catch. You would think, depending on how the preseason goes, the Giants could be checking the waiver wires if neither Matthews nor Johnson develops.

On the flip side, Saints coach Sean Payton believes that Shockey will be the perfect down the seam target for Brees and his offense. Payton needs Shockey to take some pressure off Reggie Bush and young receiver Marques Colston while converting his catches into first downs.

You can also bet that Payton will have some alignments where both Shockey and last year's receiving tight end, Eric Johnson, are on the field at the same time. Mark Campbell and Billy Miller are the tight ends who do the blocking in Payton's schemes and Campbell missed last season following back surgery.

The bottom line is that this trade was good for Shockey. He definitely needed a change of scenery.

Especially since it didn't appear a change of heart was forthcoming.

I think their fans are really happy.... Shockey was a loud mouth that was obviously unhappy over the last year or so... I think he'll be happier and the Giants will be happier as well.
