Cleveland Cavaliers sign Gibson to new deal Posted by Mary Schmitt Boyer, Plain Dealer Reporter July 16, 2008 10:16AM Joshua Gunter/The Plain Dealer Boobie Gibson re-signed with the Cavs on Wednesday. The Cavaliers have come to terms with guard Daniel "Boobie" Gibson on a multi-year contract. The official announcement was released by the team this morning. The 6-2, 194-pound guard, 22, became a fan favorite because of his shooting touch and ready smile. Not to mention that nickname. After a sterling rookie season, Gibson seemed to be en route to stardom last year, when he averaged career highs of 10.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and finished second to Jason Kapono in the Foot Locker 3-Point Shootout. He also was the MVP of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge during All-Star weekend, scoring 33 points on 11 3-pointers to lead the sophomores to a 136-109 victory. But he missed 17 games with a sprained left ankle shortly after that and struggled to regain his form. He suffered a separated shoulder in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics and missed the last two games. He recently had arthroscopic surgery to clean out his left ankle, but he is expected to be ready for training camp. A second-round draft choice by the Cavs in 2006, the 42nd player taken overall, Gibson quickly overtook No. 1 pick Shannon Brown of Michigan State in the rotation and blossomed in the 2007 post-season, when the Cavs advanced to The Finals. After averaging 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 16.5 minutes per game in 60 games as a rookie, including 16 starts, he kicked it up to 8.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 20.1 minutes per game during the playoffs. He became the first rookie since Sam Cassell with Houston in 1994 to average double figures in the NBA Finals as he averaged 10.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game against the Spurs. His breakthrough came in the decisive Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Detroit, when he scored a postseason-best 31 points as the Cavs won the conference title with a 98-82 victory. He tied a franchise record with 25 points in the second half and set a franchise record for points in a quarter with 19 in the fourth. His 12 three-pointers in the conference finals tied for the second most in a playoff series by a Cavalier. Gibson, a native of Houston, played two seasons at Texas, and averaged 13.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 68 games. He was named Honorable Mention All-America by The Associated Press following his sophomore season. He finished his high school career as the all-time leading scorer in Houston high school basketball, averaging 25.5 points per game as a senior, leading Jones to its first state title since 1965. He also was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated sixth out of 212 students in his high school senior class. http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/07/cleveland_cavaliers_sign_gibso.html

It's Great that we signed Boobie ....However IMO , we are still way behind the curve as they say....Looking around I see other teams making concrete moves to improve....and than there's the Cavs ...It just seems that IF the trend continues the Cavs will only end up farther behind instead of on the path toward building a team that can win an NBA Title in the near future....As an example our major positive news the last few weeks is that we might sign James Posey , but of course he has now signed elsewhere I believe with the Bobcats....I am aware the $ will be more available in a few season , but in the mean time , I only see it being more Frustrating as we will I predict only fall farther behind the Contending Franchises....

Farther behind? We were possibly one basket away from beating the team that pretty much walked through the rest of it's opponents on the way to a championship. We aren't that "far behind" to begin with. Meanwhile, Boston's lost Posey ... we've kept Gibson. That's the kind of thing we need to do.
The thing that's going to "put us further behind" is signing players just for the sake of signing players. We don't have the cap space to really get an impact player right now.

Ok...This is beyond nuts...Time for a different approach...
Question...What move would u like to see made???...Then we'll see if it's even feasible...
Answers???
This gosh damn team is STRAPPED right now...It ain't Ferry's fault...

I agree with you... what have the Celtics done to get better? The Pistons? Orlando? Wizards? The only team in the east that I think made strides to say they are truly better is the 76ers...

I've tried this approach as well, it won't work either. You will get one of the following answers:
1) Make rediculous trade: superstar player A for players B, C and D ... most of the time which won't even match up salary wise. This is usually accompanied with a: "Well the Lakers got Paul Gasol in a lopsided trade, we should be able to do it too".
2) Make possible trade: border-line player A for players B and C, and pretend like that will put us over the top automatically. Also ignore any long term salary cap implications player A's contract might present us if he doesn't turn into the super-player we expect him to be.
3) "I don't know ... let Ferry do it. It's his job".

Excl,
Do you ever feel as if no one reads your previous posts on this subject? I am guessing that you have explained the Ferry/Cavs cap situation at least 25 times on this board in the last 2 years...
It's like clockwork my friend....

Don't worry about the champs, losing Posey is a bummer but my boys will be just fine. It's all about obuntue (which means working together for success), the Celtics were a very tight knit team this year. They all credited their time in Europe together as the starting point and reason they won the title.
and your Cavs are better than people give credit for. 2nd best defense IMO. Posey would have been good for ya though. As long as he isn't creating off the dribble or relied on as an offensive force he is effective and a great teammate. Couple turnovers and stupid fouls, but he's all hustle. Whoever has him has a good player.

I agree and think that is because people play fantasy sports.
In the fantasy baseball league I play I have proposed a few deals to other managers involving mid level talents....good, fair deals that I thought would help both sides...each time I get counter offers sent back involving trading nearly half the team.
Real world sports doesn't work like that.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

No need to get defensive Petey.. I know the Celtics will be fine. The comment was made that all of the other teams in the east are getting so much better and the Cavs are standing still... I just made the comment that the Celtics haven't done anything yet to get better, in fact they lost a very good role player... Yea they'll still be the favorite to win the conference but it's not like they've added more talent... and neither have the Pistons or the Magic or the Wizards....
I contend that nobody really has, except the 76ers...
