My friend was playing this game called Final Fantasy XI the other day online and was kinda showing me how to play. Well I was talking with a friend of my wife tonight and she said she played it also. She asked me "what server did I play on" ?
Well me being an idiot I had no idea what she meant ? Can somebody please explain this simple concept to me,it would be appriciated so I don't look so dumb in the future. Thanks.

- Did she mean something like a site that hosts the game such as playonline.com or gamesites200.com ?

When you log in it will say in the text box "Welcome to "Server Name".

Since there is too many people playing the game they have to split them on different servers.

Thanks for replying. When you say log in,does that refer to one of those dot com addresses I mentioned ? Can it be a different server each time and an example may be "Welcome to " " ?

Thanks

When you log into the game the first thing is says in the text box is "Welcome to "Server Name".

There is no .com website to play the game on. You log onto PlayOnline through your PC/PS2/360 using the FFXI software and from there you log into the game. So I don't understand that part you are asking.

I haven't played in over a year but I do know now you can choose what server when you make your character, bu once you are assigned to a server that is your server. There was a point in time that they were allowing people to move from crowded servers to not so crowded ones, but once you switched there was not going back.

The Server list is the following:

Alexander
Asura
Bahamut
Bismarck
Caitsith
Carbuncle
Cerberus
Diabolos
Fairy
Fenrir
Garuda
Gilgamesh
Hades
Ifrit
Kujata
Lakshmi
Leviathan
Midgardsormr
Odin
Pandemonium
Phoenix
Quetzalcoatl
Ramuh
Ragnarok
Remora
Seraph
Shiva
Siren
Sylph
Titan
Unicorn
Valefor

Just to clarify, when you buy the game and install it to the HDD of your PS3, PS2 or 360 you will have an Icon that will say FFXI, or Playonline and from there you log into the game.

You won't log in using an internet browser.

IMO your crazy, FFXI was the best MMORPG I've ever played and I've played a lot. The story line for Chais of Promathia is unmatched by any other MMO story line out there.

haha, it's been a few years since I've played it.

It's a very hardcore game, much much much tougher than WoW (which I also played but not as much)

Maybe you can explain it to me sometime. I'm on chapter 5 right now and it's not making a lot of sense. I think it is more an issue of the time gap between missions that I forget what happened on the previous one

They do allow server transfers now.

It's a pretty hardcore game, you have to be willing to put in the time to get the good stuff.

I respect your opinion but I'd rather not need a group of 5 people to kill a mob one level higher than me...

There's difficult and extremely difficult with extremely long level grinds, not fun for me.

Also, I've played the most hardcore MMO out (Ultima Online) back in the day, you die people can take everything on you, nothing more hardcore than that.

Agree.. I actually really enjoyed playing the game, but it just took way too long. I was also playing college baseball at the time so that probably didn't help. I had to quit because I just didn't have the time anymore.

My advice to anyone who wants to play this game: have your main be a white mage or paladin. They are always in demand, whereas damage dealers are a dime a dozen. It might not seem like a big deal, but it takes a long time to put together a party at the higher levels, and you need a party to do just about anything productive in the game.

I played as a red mage mostly, who were also fairly in-demand, especially post-refresh.

You could have been a Beastmaster and Solo'd the whole game!

Really what this game comes down to is the difference in Japanese gaming and American gaming. FFXI is hardcore Japanese gaming. Teamwork and high difficulty. Now you don't need a party of 5 to fight a Tough but you will need a party of 5 to fight Incredibly Tough and get decent XP to level up. Especially to get the most XP/Hour you need a well balanced party that won't have much down time between fights and have the right equipment to have sufficent weapon chains that will kill a mob faster. Faster Kills = more xp chains = more xp/hour.

IMO, the whole point of a MMO is to interact with others and FFXI does that masterfuly. If you want to solo the whole game there are plenty of RPG's out there that accomodate that.

But I understand that not everyone likes that type of gaming. Heck, the whole reason I stopped playing was because my daughter was born last year and I really didn't have the time to play anymore. My Paladin was at level 67 and I would have to spend about 2 hours making my food just to be able to go and level and I'd spend 3 - 4 hours of xping and then that would take me 4 xp trips to gain a level. So you must devote a lot of time to be able to play this game. Which a lot of people don't like. If I had the time I'd be playing right now.

I'd suggest Ninja over Paladin. Paladin was my main, but higher levels everyone wants the Ninja (unless things have changed in the last year). With the Utsemi:Ichi and :Ni, i've seen good ninjas go for hours with out taking a hit. When I played my White Mage, I literally did nothing but buffed for hours.

imo needing a group to do things does not make a game hardcore. It is a multiplayer game after all. The annoyance for me in ffxi is all the time sinks such as waiting for airships, long travel times and such. It's not the kind of game where I can log on and get something down if I only had an hour to play.

As for jobs if you want a quick run to 75, bard is the way to go. Those guys are always in demand. Red mage and white mage are high demand too. Red mage especially once they get refresh.

Ninja vs Paladin, I haven' seen people be too picky. At least up to 72 people will take any tank they can get because they are often hard to come buy. Even at 75 I've seen my share of Ninja and Paladin tanks. Endgame may be a different a story. I don't do endgame but I'd imagine thats where alot of the "ninja only" mentality is at.
