Okay, fellow Dawgtalkers. I need some help. My husband and I are a busy couple with three daughters(6,7,12). I work every other weekend, he works nights. I'd like some ideas for mini-vacations. Where are some good family friendly places we could go for a weekend? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, my wife and I are taking our daughter to Sesame Place next month, which is a theme park for kids. It sounds like your 12 year old might be too old for it, though.

If your looking for something simple, there's places like Great Wolf Lodge, which is an indoor water park you can stay at up in Sandusky. Then you can always hit up Cedar Point, which is right in the area.

It really depends on what you want to spend, how far you want to go, and where you live at. I wanted to go to the beach this year, but the wife nixed that when I mentioned I heard about Sesame Place. If you have the money, there's family resorts called Beaches. It's a spinoff of Sandals, owned by the same company. They're all-inclusive family resorts, and supposedly pretty nice. The all-inclusive deals are great. Never need to worry about that extra spending money, and don't have to leave your hotel.

Head this way ( Sandusky). We have Cedar Point, several Water Parks, Ferrys to the Islands and just about every weekend there is something going on like Huron Boat Basin has concerts, festivals and movies. Port Clinton usually has something such as Arts & Crafts shows.

Thanks for the input DP017. We did the Kalahari thing a couple weeks ago, and had a blast. But I am looking for something not too expensive, but I guess that's usually not an option for a family of five.

Shep, we live in Norwalk....about an hour west of Cleveland, and 20 minutes south of Sandusky(Cedar Point). I don't mind driving, but my husband normally has to be back to work Sunday night. And, he's a contractor, so no vacation pay, so he very rarely takes any time off.

I guess I'd like something simple, fun, and not too expensive.

LOL, ok how about Canoeing down around Mohican in the Mansfield, Loundonville area. Beautiful part of Ohio and the State Park has cabins for rent at reasonal prices. Its close to Amish country too.

Come on down to Chattanooga. There is lot's to do and it is close enough you can drive but far enough away you felt like you actually went someplace.

17 hours on the road at 3.99 a gallon doesn't sound like a mini-vacation to me......

I'm just sayin.'

I do it for Browns games 4-5 times a year....they are mini vacations to me.....but....I understand your point.

None the less, it would still make a nice trip.

I don't think its 17 hours to Chattanoga Shep. Isn't it more like 10 or 12? Plus you can make some time after you get out of Ohio.

I'm surprised that Shep hasn't suggested Salt Fork Lake State Park.

I used to love going there as a kid.

That is what I was going to say...9-10 each way.

Been there and done that more than a couple of times.

What about Geneva? Fun little place, neat to visit for a short time. (on lake erie).
Or nelson ledges?
Or don't they have riverboats on the Ohio river now?
hale farm and village............can't remember where it's at or if it's still open.

In all I would look for little festivals.........like the mantua apple butter, or Mesopatamia's ox roast. or heck there must be TONS of em.

I haven't been to these places since leaving Ohio way back in 1981 but here are my choices based on memories:

Niagara Falls(Canada)
Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village
Gettysburg & Hershey PA
Washington D.C.
Hocking Hills (best in fall)
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Museum
Mackinac Island (this one: never been there myself)
Williamsburg
Thousand Islands
Ohio State Fair
Canadian National Exhibition (held annually in Toronto)

May I suggest http://www.visitamishcountry.com/ It's not a long drive for you. There are enough things to keep you, your hubby and the kids happy, and it's inexpensive. (You also can't beat the food)

Next time you come up bring a 6 y.o. and a 7 y.o. and a 12 y.o. and let me know how that works out for you.

Amish country is a good weekend.....as would be a weekend camping trip at Salt Fork or any other camping area.

Mmmmmm....I love going to Amish country. Good food, shopping, walking, outdoors...Lots of great bed and breakfasts down that way. Just keep in mind that things close early there (most things close at 5) and nothing is really open on Sundays. But it's still a lovely weekend getaway.

Thanks everyone for your input, you have given me some great ideas! My husband and I don't really know what there is to explore in Ohio, so any suggestions are welcome. I love little festivals and have never thought to visit Amish country.

Been to Salt Fork and LOVED it, maybe we'll plan to go that way soon!

But thanks again!!

I agree w/17, Cedar Point. We like to go on a trip every year and this year we are taking the girls to Cedar Point overnight. It's somewhat close not too too expensive.

Indeed, I have been to Cooperstown several times since moving to Central New York.

I still can't believe that they are keeping Charlie Hustle and Shoeless Joe out.

No problem.

Of course, I have my own little tradition that I started about 20 years ago. Every year, for my birthday, I go someplace that I have never been before. Now that I am married, my wife is included in these trips.

We had been looking at the Canadian Atlantic provinces or Quebec City but with exchange rates being unfavorable now, we stayed in the states. Distance isn't particularly a concern. We once put more than 2000 miles on our car in little more than two days (driving around New Mexico!!) Of course, gasoline prices were under $3/gallon at that time.

I know. Its nuts that Rose especially isn't in there. There is alot of scumbags worse than Rose in the HOF. Iwrote them a letter saying I won't be back until Rose is admitted. Never heard back so I guess it didn't shake them up to much.

It's nice for a weekend (slow down and relax) or it's even better for a whole week. I'm use to getting up at 4 am, so it's perfect for me

Well, I did see a "skinnyish" Amish teenager along with his bulky older sibling hocking some fruits near Ogdensburg NY a couple of years ago when we made a trip to Ottawa.

Of course, on the way back into the country (at Quebec coming into NY at I-87), I had the following conversation with the border agent.

Border agent: "Where are you coming from?"

Inexplicably, I look dumbfounded and after a long pause, I reply quizzically and with a with a heavy dose of confusion.

Me: "Canada?"
