Report: Ogden to announce retirement

Published: Thursday, June 05, 2008

Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden is expected to announce his retirement in the next week, the Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday.

According to the Sun, Ogden has not informed new Ravens coach John Harbaugh of his decision but has told people close to him that he intends to retire.

The 12-year veteran endured injury-plagued seasons in 2006 and 2007 and considered retiring before the start of last year.

A toe injury at the end of the 2006 campaign got worse last season, limiting Ogden's effectiveness and hurting the Ravens' running game.

Ogden was limited to just 11 contests last season but still made the Pro Bowl for the 11th straight season - even though the Ravens struggled through a disastrous 5-11 season that led to the firing of former coach Brian Billick.

Ogden's departure would leave a gaping hole on the left side of Baltimore's line. The Ravens are expecting Jared Gaither or Adam Terry to replace Ogden at the position.

Exactly. We knew it was coming, eventually. Hopefully Wimbley takes advantage of this although Gaither looks like he could be a good one.

Yup. Not only do they lose their left tackle, they get a nice big cap hit.

In his prime, Ogden was a true shutdown LT. However, you could tell he was past his prime these past few years. It was time for him to retire. Good luck to him, though.

They still get a cap hit if he retires?

They sure do. It is possible that since this is after June 1st his remaining bonus money will be spread out through this year and the next year equally, but I don't think so. I could be wrong about that though. I know it is that way if you cut him, but am not sure about retirements.

That's what I was thinking...

I thought once they file their retirement papers, their salary is taken off of the cap. I could be wrong tho.

Retirments dont effect the teams payroll unless there was still guarnteed money on the contract, than what happens is there is a buy out of some sort, or the contract has in it all guarnteed money unpaid at the time of retirement is voided. This is due to the contract is being voided by the player.

somebody retired last year & Mike & Mike were talking about the contracts and I remember hearing it,

Add in a retirment due to injury and you have a whole diffrent line of wording,

Really bottom line is it's the players decision to retire, he's voiding the contract and normally some money is paid to the player and some money is recuiped by the team.

Actually, Clay, I'm pretty sure that since it's the Rats, they have to take a $50 million cap hit and, as further punishment, they have to start Kyle Boller this whole year at QB. I swear, it's in the NFL rules.

FYI

http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/faq.asp

Question 1.12
What happens if a player is traded or retires?

Answer: We already know that if a player is waived on or before June 1, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Acceleration also occurs when a player is traded or waived and picked up by another team. The new team is not responsible for any of the original signing bonus. The team that waived or traded the player is responsible for the accelerated signing bonus (in the same manner as described above).

In most cases, if a player retires, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Thus, the team will take an immediate salary cap hit of the remaining signing bonus.

I'm conflicted a little. As a football fan, you have to admit, Ogden was outstanding.. No doubt a big reason the Ravens won a Superbowl.

As a Browns Fan, I keep thinking "what if"? Had the Browns remained here, with Ozzie and Phil, would they have picked the same players that they did with the Ravens?

in the end, I think it comes down to he's been one hell of a player that is distined for the HOF.. I wish him well no matter what .

Look for the "Ravens sign OT S. Olivea to a contract" headline soon.

He apparently already came to an agreement with a team and it only makes sense for that team to be the Ravens, reuniting him with his former OC.

It's win-win: he retires while still fairly healthy and the Ravens get weaker

yeah, all raven-hatred aside, this guy was a phenomenal player and deserves to go to the hall of fame...

11 pro bowl appearances in 12 years, 9 times an all-pro...

from his card, it looks like he missed 15 games his entire career, 11 of those coming just within the last 3 or 4 years...

that's really impressive...

Sad to see Ogden go. I always kinda considered him a Brown, which makes no sense, but it does to me. In an era when Orlando Pace changed how teams value OLT's, Ogden was there before him.

What's more sad is that Ogden probably could have been much more dominant, but he didn't keep himself in good shape. Realistically, Ogden's career was cut short.

Because I remember being excited about him his last season at UCLA, and the Browns blew that year. That was the first year the Ravens drafted, and it sucked because I felt like if the team stayed in Cleveland he would be the pick.

Great as he was....a few of them were totally undeserved.

Hell, i won't be surprised if he pulls pro bowl votes after he freakin' retires.

Ravens LT Ogden set to end decorated career Thursday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Jonathan Ogden is expected to announce his retirement Thursday and end his stellar career with the Baltimore Ravens.

The left offensive tackle earned 11 Pro Bowl invitations and a Super Bowl ring.

Ogden will turn 34 next month and told friends he won't return for a 13th season. The 6-foot-9, 345-pounder has been bothered by an hyperextended toe since December 2006.

Ogden played in a career-low 11 games last year and did not participate in the Pro Bowl because of the bothersome big toe on his left foot.
