Redskins Add Hamilton to Defensive Backs
By Gary Fitzgerald

The Redskins have signed second-year safety Justin Hamilton, the team announced on Friday.
To make room for Hamilton on the roster, the Redskins released defensive back Stephen Tate, an undrafted rookie.

Hamilton, 6-3 and 222 pounds, played the 2006 season with the Cleveland Browns, totaling 15 tackles (13 solo) during his rookie season.

Hamilton was released by the Browns on Sept. 1, 2007, and did not play last season.

He was originally a seventh-round draft choice by the Browns in 2006.

Hamilton played four seasons at Virginia Tech from 2002-05. He split time between running back and wide receiver, before moving to safety permanently during his senior season.

As a senior in 2005, Hamilton posted 35 tackles and three interceptions.

Hamilton grew up in Clintwood, Va., located in the western part of the state. He attended Clintwood High School.

Hamilton is expected to be on hand as the Redskins resume OTAs on June 2.

Some of you have been asking me what was going on with Justin. I wish him the best in Washington. He is a great kid from a great family. Hopefully he won't get injured again and get cut.

Maybe it's just my blind need to see some late round pick make it big, but I thought that Hamilton was a pretty good guy. Oh well...

Pass on that I wish him all the best, except when he plays us!

Best of luck to him, except when we play the 'Skins this season... then I hope he gets toasted repeatedly

Thought he showed promise. Too bad he got hurt. Hope he does well.

I still don't understand why we released him. I thought he played better than Pool, and it wasn't even all that close. Heck, if you remember after Russell got hurt two years ago........Pool steps in and sucks....but in most games, Hamilton usually replaced him, was more effective, and played more.

Still don't get that one........?????????

I'm thrilled! He is much closer to his family, so they can come and see him play more often. They are also in the DC football market, so all of his games will be televised.

I would much rather him be in Cleveland, (for my own selfish reasons) but this is probably a better situation. They don't have two young established starters, and he is athletic enough to play either safety position.

I know what I was told, and I think it just came down to numbers. He was injured, and we picked up Adams in free agency. A week before he may have been able to resign, we picked up Sorenson (special teamer only). He played too much as a rookie to be on the PS, and we didn't have much invested in him.

He did have back issues (fixed now) as well as another ankle injury as a rookie. Maybe that was an overriding concern?

I wish him the best of luck. It was unfortunate how his tenure ended with the Browns. I had hoped he would stick; and, from what i've seen and heard, thought he could've been a contributor to this team.

No, I'm with you. I seem to remember Hamilton looking pretty darn good when he got in there. I never even followed what happened to him. In fact, I saw the blurb on the NFL Network ticker the other day about the 'Skins signing him and I was scratching my head because I thought he was still with us. Ooops. Well, good luck to him.
