A group in Santa Fe says the city is discriminating against them because they say that they're allergic to the wireless Internet signal. And now they want Wi-Fi banned from public buildings.

Arthur Firstenberg says he is highly sensitive to certain types of electric fields, including wireless Internet and cell phones.

"I get chest pain and it doesn't go away right away," he said.

Firstenberg and dozens of other electro-sensitive people in Santa Fe claim that putting up Wi-Fi in public places is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The city attorney is now checking to see if putting up Wi-Fi could be considered discrimination.

But City Councilor Ron Trujillo says the areas are already saturated with wireless Internet.

"It's not 1692, it's 2008. Santa Fe needs to embrace this technology, it's not going away," Trujillo said.

The city attorney hopes to have a legal recommendation by the end of the month.

Uh, aren't there radio waves everywhere all the time, pretty much everywhere?

Someone just needs to get an entire tinfoil suit.

I had a friend a few years ago that said cell phones were going to become the next "cigarettes".

Interesting. I know that I'm allergic to some posters on this board, but I think I'm safe from Wi-Fi allergies.

Did he mean that they were going to sponsor the NASCAR championship for a long time and then become politically incorrect and get replaced by something more "friendly"?

This sounds like a complete scam to me.

I'm not sure of the angle yet, but if they can get a precedent set by getting the city to remove their devices, that would open the doors to claim that corporations or individuals in the area are harming them (and thus open to civil suits) with their wireless and cellular signals.

That is what I was thinking. I love Wi-Fi and a lot of corporations have a problem with it.

Ive heard that the entire city of Toronto is fully Wi-Fi is that true.

With the New regime starting in Cleveland. It is key that the Browns draft Taylor Mays. He fits our scheme and is one of the best safeties I have seen

I'm not sure about Toronto, but I'm 99% certain that San Fran is and I believe that Microsoft pays to keep all of Redmond completely wired.

I wouldn't want to see the angry mob that kicks these people out Sante Fe when they can't access the internet in their coffee shops.

Wouldn't suing everyone that plants flowers or trees that add to the pollen count be possible too? Think of all the lawsuits!

That is entirely true... you are knowing and willingly contributing to the public discomfort of the citizens around you by planting pollen generating plants.

*achooo* I have medically documented allergies, so I'll be first to file the suit against my local government.

I'm allergic to B.S. It makes my head hurt and it doesn't go away right away. Who do I sue to have all the B.S. removed from society? Is there a coalition of frivolous lawsuit filers I can start with?

Why should I have to be subjected to second hand wireless signals? I have the right to clean airways!!
Sounds like they'll have to build wireless patios surrounded with faraday cages right next to the smoking patios.

The slippery slope...
