Since when is expecting 8-8 doom and gloom?

Well, if you are only going to look at one of your comments then it's not so gloom and doom...

I think for me it was the totallity of your post that was more gloomy than I think the situation actually is.. Of course, that's JMO and my take on things.

So much goes into a team winning.. so many things have to come together just right that it's impossible to predict..

But just looking at things on paper the way they are.. then doing some projections on some of the younger guys maturing even more (wright, mcdonald, pool, DQ, Wimbley).

And some of the vets getting and remaining healthy (Peek, Bentley, Tuck, baxter)

Combining that with what I hope will be some interesting UDFA's (AJ Davis and Mil'von James) and a young rookie LB in Bell.

Couple that with the retuning vets that did so well last season (DA, Lewis, Edwards, Winslow, Fraley, Stieny, Thomas) then adding Stallworth and a larger role for Cribbs...

Yes, I think there is plenty to be positive about..

Will it all workout the way I would like... I hardly think so,, But it could.. and that's what I'm hanging my hat on.

It appears so.

Edwards honors Advance 100 students
Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
06.01.2008

One down. Three more to go.

That's what 100 soon-to-be 10th-graders in the Cleveland Public Schools are thinking after finishing their freshman year of high school.

They have plenty to look forward to if they continue the success they've started over the past year.

The 100 students were chosen a year ago to be a part of the Advance 100 program, created by the Braylon Edwards Foundation.

If they maintain a 2.5 grade point average, do 15 hours of community service per year and uphold other qualifications, when they finish high school they're eligible for $10,000 in scholarship money donated by Edwards.

Since the program began, it has taken off far more than even Edwards thought it would.

The program has been written about in several local and national publications like USA Today and has been featured on ESPN and HBO.

Saturday at the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) Metro Campus in Downtown Cleveland, Edwards was doing more than just honoring the students for completing their first year of the program. He also was commending them for completing a college credit through Tri-C.

The students recently completed an "Intro to College" course that emphasized career exploration, financial aid and literacy, selecting a college major and other preparatory course work facilitated by Tri-C staff. The goal is for the students to complete several more hours of college credit at Tri-C before graduating from high school, thereby getting a head start at earning their four-year college degree.

Students also were given a certificate for completing their first year as well as a pair of running shoes, courtesy of Nike.

The ceremony was attended by Browns head coach Romeo Crennel as well as Tri-C President Jerry Sue Thornton.

Edwards said he can see the progress the group has made after a year.

"These kids have upheld their part of the bargain and have made the program worthwhile," the Pro Bowl wideout said.

During a speech Saturday, Edwards told the young students how their continued dedication has helped him achieve as well.

"Once we had the scholarship program in tact and we moved forward, we made a commitment to each other," Edwards said to the students. "You weren't the only ones out there trying to uphold your end of the bargain.

I was doing the same thing because, who am I to have a scholarship initiative and not do what I'm supposed to be doing? I have to do the necessary things to be a positive influence on you guys."

When this charter class graduates high school in 2011, Edwards said he'll then pick another class of eight-graders, then follow that with another class every year or every other year.

Edwards also is in the process of initiating the first class of Advance 100 students in his hometown of Detroit, to begin in the Fall of 2009.

Thanks for the article. It warms my heart to see that it wasn't just a public relations move orchestrated by the Browns last year. I commend Edwards for really giving back to the community.

Yeah, I don't know. I think it really got inside his head when he was Boo'ed at that Cavs game. He has really made strides to improve his image since then. And not just for the Browns. It's good to see that he is following through with his commitments. He would look like the world's biggest jerk if he didn't make good on his promises to these kids. Did you happen to catch the story about him visiting that Lakewood kid in the hospital last fall just before he died? ESPN did a story on it. It was really heart-warming and very sad. But I think BE realizes that he is an inspiration to so many kids and he has a responsibility to lead a life that they can someday emulate. That seems to keep him going and I hope it is something he never forgets.

Yeah,, BE was a fat headed, ego driven, dufus when he first got here and he was worse his second year.. but still, you could see the potential for good things was there. If only he'd settle down and do his job and shut up.

Well, last season he did just that.. look at the results. Outstanding IMO..

But the off field stuff he's been doing for those kids is not only heart warming, but a needed activity for young, talented millionaires.. That is the kinda stuff they NEED to do. Not for the ego or the pub,.. but just because it's the RIGHT thing to do. I applaud BE..

I don't know if any of you saw him on the Costas Special on HBO a few weeks back. He was on a panel discussing the Media coverage of sports figures.. The kid is articulate.. very much so in fact. He's bright as hell..

If he stays on this path on and off the field, he has a chance to be thought of as one of the best all around NFL players and personalities.

Yeah, I think he's headed for a career in TV after football. And yes, dawglover, he was Booed at a Cavs game. It was after the whole sideline tantrum he threw. They showed him on the jumbotron during a Cavs game and a lot of people started booing him. I read that it really got inside his head. I'll see if I can find the article.
